âGreg!â
Gregory hurriedly responded, âIâm here.â
I was both angry and heartbroken.
He smiled at me, even though beads of sweat had formed on the tip of his nose.
When Dr. Andrews was treating his wound, I saw him wince.
He was trying to bear it, but some reactions are just involuntary.
I turned away, unable to bear watching him in pain and admittedly, a bit upset.
Gregory signaled Dr. Andrews to hurry up.
Once Dr. Andrews had skillfully finished up, he left Gregory and me alone in the room.
Gregory grabbed my hand, but I pulled away, only to hear him hiss in pain. I immediately turned back, âYou okay?â
âNever better.â
Gregory wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me into a hug.
I was about to protest when I heard his hoarse voice, âJane, it hurts.â
I froze, knowing all too well this was one of his schemes.
âServes you right.â
âYeah.â Gregory played along, âI deserve it.â
âThen stop being mad, and take care of me, okay?â
âIâm so pitiful.â
Fine.
Seeing I didnât respond, Gregory nuzzled into my neck, like a big dog seeking its ownerâs comfort.
It wasnât anger I felt, but deep concern.
Now, how could I resist him? I looked up at him, âNo more next times.â
âDeal, I promise.â
Afterward, we headed home together.
Dinner was unsatisfying, so we picked up some pastries on the way back.
I bit into a pistachio pastry Gregory offered, asking, âLucius hasnât returned?â
âHeâs dealing with the aftermath with Dailey,â Gregory replied truthfully.
I paused, âThereâs something I need to tell you.â
Before I could continue, he guessed, âAdvise Christine not to put all her eggs in one basket.â
âStop it, you just want to win that bet about who gets married first.â
Gregory hugged me closer, laughing, âHow can I ever keep anything from you? But, Iâve been wondering.â
âWhat?â I asked.
âWhenever someone spoke ill of Christine, youâd defend her. Why didnât you say anything this time when Dailey crossed the line?â
I pursed my lips, âBecause I know Dailey didnât want Christine to move abroad. I didnât want that either. You getting hurt shows how dangerous it can be.â
âExceptional circumstances call for exceptional measures.â
âBut Dailey did hurt Christine, and sheâs decided to stop chasing him.â
âYou must be thrilled, your bet looks like a win.â
As soon as I finished speaking, he raised an eyebrow, a smile playing on his lips, âAre you proposing to me?â
Shameless!
...
On the weekend, Gregory and I visited the Myers family.
Ramona was already waiting at the door with apple pies.
âYou look much better today.â
She glanced at Gregory, âIndeed, love is the best medicine.â
âOnce you returned, she recovered.â
âRamona...â
I was embarrassed, as if I couldnât live without Gregory.
Though, it seemed somewhat true.
âIt was Dr. Brownâs medicine. His expertise is commendable.â
Ramona didnât burst my bubble, âAs long as youâre well, thatâs all that matters.â
She handed me the pie, âJust seeing you eases my mind, go on now.â
âAlright.â
I knew Ramona was aware of my reluctance to see Victor.
Seeing her well also put me at ease.
After exchanging a few more words, Gregory and I left.
Upon returning to Elmwood Villas, we saw Lucius, whom we hadnât seen in days.
âGregory, everythingâs been taken care of.â
Lucius glanced at me, hesitating, âJane...â
Gregory gave him a cold look, âWhat, you forgot how to speak English after a few days abroad?â
Lucius stumbled over his words, âUh, Mr. Clarkson, well, got a bit hurt.â
Gregory immediately understood, âSerious?â
Lucius pondered, to lie to me on Gregory's behalf and risk my anger, or to be honest and face Gregory's. But my anger was decidedly more daunting.
âNot serious, but heâs hospitalized. Maybe heâs waiting for someone to visit.â
Gregory drew out his response with a âHmm.â
I observed their performance silently.
After Lucius said his piece, he quickly excused himself.
Gregory and I locked eyes for a moment before he asked, âShould we tell her?â
I inquired, âIf I say no, will you keep it from me?â
Gregory nodded, âOf course, I always listen to my wife.â
I teased him, âWho's your wife?â
...
Following his trip abroad, Gregory started spending more time at home.
He never missed an appointment for the pregnancy checkups and brought as much work home as possible.
This, however, led to a slight inconvenience.
While I appreciated his company, it left me with no time to work on the wedding dress design.
Under Christineâs urging, I had begun a draft.
But I didnât want him to find out just yet.
Morning sickness got worse, halting the dress design process.
By the third month, my mom called.
âSweetie, Iâve finally cleared my schedule and can start planning the party.â

âYour party, of course!â
Then it hit me.
My mom was preparing to announce my parentage publicly.
I knew she had been waiting for this day for a long time.
I, too, wanted everyone to know I was her daughter, so she could attend my wedding openly as my mom.
I smiled, âGreat, when?â
âAfter October, wait for my update.â
Calculating the time, I knew she was planning to meticulously handle everything herself.
