Dailey emerged from the back, and the group of youngsters dispersed immediately.
Christine looked at Dailey's slightly amused face and felt an overwhelming urge to slap him.
But her sense of propriety held her back.
"You..." She started to speak, only to have him cover her mouth.
"No swearing in the presence of the Lord."
"..."
Christine glared at him, forcefully swatting his hand away.
She then watched in disbelief as he dropped to one knee.
He opened a small velvet box in front of her.
"Christine, I propose to you before God, my sincerity as clear as the heavens."
"Don't worry about my family's reaction or the obstacles ahead. I've sincerely prayed, and God will watch over us."
"Christine, will you marry me?"
"..."
Suddenly, Christine had a moment of clarity.
Dailey wasn't misunderstanding her words.
He was deliberately twisting them, following his own whims.
"I'm not marrying you."
Christine had come to the church to pray for peace and prosperity.
And now, she was caught in this impossible situation.
"I don't want to argue in front of the Lord. Dailey, if you truly care for me, please leave."
Dailey, despite the rejection, showed no sign of anger.
He stood up, took Christine's hand, and slipped the ring onto her middle finger.
Christine struggled to pull away, but once the ring was on, it wouldn't come off.
Dailey's voice was calm as he said, "They say if a ring won't come off, it's true love. We are before God, and He doesn't deceive, does He?"
Christine was trapped.
She couldn't deny it without showing disrespect to God.
She finally saw through Dailey's plan.
He chose this place to propose not because she was visiting the church today or because he was short on time.
He was using her respect for the sacred to pressure her into agreement.
"Is this a proposal or coercion?"
"And knowing you wanted a proposal, I made sure to give you one."
"How have I coerced you?"
"..."
Damn, he made a twisted sort of sense.
Christine was so angry she could have ground her teeth to dust.
Before she could think of a way to counter, Dailey spoke again.
"If you donât agree to marry me, you owe me a billion dollars."
"What?!"
Christine barely held back a curse, "Dailey, how is this not coercion?"
"It's not."
Dailey was calm, drawing her into his logic with ease.
Fair?
That was a colossal problem!
Christine's fists clenched tightly.
Anywhere else, she would have pummeled Dailey.
"I've never even seen this money." She gritted her teeth, her anger barely contained.
"Dailey, don't push me. I am capable of anything."
Dailey pulled her closer, whispering, "Then do anythingâmarry me."
"..."
"I won't agree!"
Merritt stepped between them.
But Dailey was quicker, pulling Christine behind him.
His expression towards Merritt was icy and sharp, all warmth and humor gone.
