Howard glanced at Keera with a flicker of something in his eyes before he said, âOkay, donât worry. Iâlldefinitely think of something.â
Having said that, he turned around and left with Cindy.
But Cindy had already caught on to something and blurted out, âDivorce her, then you wonât have anyresponsibilities!â
She was already pregnant with Howardâs child and, of course, hoped that Howard could have a goodlife.
Howard frowned, however. âThatâs the worst choice. If we really get divorced, I might end up withnothing. Wouldnât all my efforts in the past three years go to
waste?!â
He had been married to Keera for three years alreadyâ¦
Cindy didnât want him to walk away empty-handed either and immediately said, âThen what should we
do?â
â
âThere must be a way; thereâs definitely a wayâ¦â
Howard stroked his chin, and his eyes lit up. âWhen we were in Oceanion, she had a pretty goodrelationship with Uncle Olsen. Letâs find Uncle Olsen to intervene. Just one word from him to Davis
Corporation, and theyâll surely stop pursuing the lawsuit. As long as they withdraw the legal action, thereâs still a chance for everything to turn around!â
After he and Cindy left, Keiraâs phone lit up, displaying a WhatsApp notification that Mary had addedher as a
friend.
Soon after came a message from Mary.
âI blocked you for five minutes, consider it payback for the half-year you blocked me! Teehee!
âBy the way, how are things on your end? Is he going to divorce you?â
Keira replied, âNot yet.â
Mary asked, âSo what now?â
Keira said. âIt looks like he wonât give up until heâs at the end of his rope. As long as Davis Corporationdoesnât drop the lawsuit, heâll be like an ant on a hot
pan. Donât rush it.â
Maryâs chat status continuously showed that she was typingâ¦
But after ten minutes of typing, still no message came.
Keira, unable to resist, asked, âWhatâs wrong? Is there something inconvenient on your end?â
Mary immediately replied, âNo, I just feel like youâre not quite the same as before.â
Keira looked at the message and was about to respond with something when she saw anothermessage from Mary pop up. âKeera, no matter what happens, Iâll always stand by your side. Whetheritâs the past you, the present you, or the future you. As long as itâs you, I will always be there for you!â
Keira froze as she read the message.
She had been acting as her sister for a while, and her interactions with Mary made her feel like she hada
friend for the first time.
At this moment, looking at the message, she wanted to tell Mary that she was no longer Keeraâ¦
But after a long silence, she ultimately didnât voice that
thought.
She thought that if Keera was still alive, she would certainly have regretted being too love-struck totrust in friendship and blocked Maryâ¦
Keira was silent for a long, long time, and finally replied with only one sentence. âThank you for liking
Keera.â
The message was actually a bit odd.
But Keera often said strange things, so Mary didnât
mind it.
She was yet to put down her phone when Uncle Davis, who was sitting across the dining table from hersuddenly scoffed. âMary, as long as you land the next client, Iâll secure the position of R&D project tearleader for you. Could you please focus a little and being so distracted?â
Mary immediately set down her phone. âUnele, donât worry. Iâll definitely perform well.â
She needed to stay in the company to find a way to retract the lawsuit after the divorce or to help Keerapay that twenty million, so if there was a chance to
keen the job she had to try.
Uncle Davisâs eyes flickered with a hint of mockery as he heard her. âHmm, Mr. Lynch is not verytactful. Donât provoke him later.â
Mary nodded. âI understand, Uncle.â
No sooner had these words fallen than there was a knock on the door, followed by the entry of a portly
man.
He appeared to be in his forties, and his appearance was quite greasy.
After shaking hands with Uncle Davis, he immediately turned to Mary with a beaming smile. âMr. Davis, who is this young lady? Iâve never seen her before!â
Uncle Davis replied with a smile, âThis is my fourth brotherâs daughter, who is currently interning at DayCorporation. Today sheâs accompanying me to gain some exposure.â
Mr. Lynch immediately nodded. âOh? Miss Davis, a
pleasure to meet youâ¦â
He extended his hand toward Mary.
When Mary took his hand, she only felt his palm
clammy and quite disgusting.
She tried to pull her hand back, but he tightened his grip slightly, making it hard for her to pull away.
Immediately, she sought help from her uncle with her
eyes.
Uncle Davis then said with a laugh, âMr. Lynch, please take a seat! The dishes will get cold if we waitmuch longer!â
Only then did Mr. Lynch sit down with a lecherous grin.
Uncle Davis discussed a few matters about the contract with Mr. Lynch. This was Uncle Davisâs project. If he could seal the deal, it would earn him the admiration of the first branch and further solidify hisposition within Davis Corporation.
But Mr. Lynch, all smiles, avoided bringing up the contract and kept glancing over at Mary.
Uncle Davis then said with a laugh, âMary, Mr. Lynch has taken a liking to you. Why donât you toasthim?â
Mary felt repulsed by the look in Mr. Lynchâs eyes.
Reluctantly, she stood up with her glass, walked over to Mr. Lynch, and said with a smile, âUncle.Lynch, my
uncle often speaks of you, saying youâre a good friend.
Iâd like to offer you a toast!â
With that statement, she distinguished their generational gap.
It caused a sudden change in Mr. Lynchâs expression.
Uncle Davis furrowed his brows and glared at Mary, then shot a look at Mr. Lynch.
Mary was only paying attention to Mr. Lynch and didnât notice her uncleâs expression. She just saw Mr.Lynchâs expression change, and then he stood up. âAlright, my dear niece, your Uncle Lynch will surelytake good care of you from now on!â
Mary breathed a sigh of relief and downed the content of her glass all at once.
Then she looked at Uncle Davis. âUncle, I just
remembered that I still have some work to do. You and
Uncle Lynch enjoy yourselves. I need to head back!â
Having said that, she quickly picked up her bag and started walking out.
Even a fool could see that something was off with Uncle Davis; how could she possibly stay there?!
But just as she took a few steps, she suddenly felt dizzy, and her body went limp!
Mary instantly realized what had happened and looked desperately at her glass, then incredulously atUncle
Davis!!
She thought, being the daughter of the Davis family and her uncleâs niece, she was just a ploy tosecure a contract with her beauty, but she had never imagined Uncle Davis would drug her drink!
This was completely beyond what she could comprehend or accept!
She rushed to the door and flung it open, hoping to cry for help from anyone passing by.
Yet, she hadnât expected that when she opened the door, the person walking by her private room wouldactually be Ellis.
Hearing the commotion, he turned around in surprise
and saw Mary.
As their eyes met, the plea for help choked in her
throat.
Mary stood there, stunned.
Ope
In her mind, she heard the words Ellis had once said about her during a matchmaking encounter. ââ¦indeed, just an empty-headed beauty with nothing but looks.â
Would he think even less of her if he found out she was using her looks to discuss a deal?
âMy dear niece, youâve had too much drink! Come have
some teaâ¦â
From behind, Uncle Davis suddenly approached and grabbed Maryâs arm, pulling her back inside, thenproceeded to push the door closed.
In the very moment he was about to shut the door, a hand suddenly stopped itâ¦
