Keira looked at the photograph with bewilderment.
In the photo, she and Mrs. Olsen were at the seaside.
Both wore white chiffon dresses. She was in the front with Mrs. Olsen in the back, and both were beaming. They indeed looked like a mother and daughter with a close relationship.
But Keira didnât have a white chiffon dressâ¦
She left the Olsen family when she was in junior high and hadnât seen Mrs.
Olsen since, how could there be a picture of them together?
She took Old Mrs. Hortonâs phone and zoomed in on the photo.
Then she found some clues!
The photo was photoshopped. The method was quite unprofessional, and it seemed like they found a picture of a mother and daughter online and then replaced their faces with hers and Mrs. Olsenâs.
She looked at Old Mrs. Horton. âWhen did I send this to you?â
Old Mrs. Horton shook her head. âI donât remember.
âHow did I send it to you? Email? Or text message?
Old Mrs. Horton kept shaking her head. âI canât remember.
Keira didnât know what to say.
Old Mrs. Horton occasionally said one or two surprising things, but then was unable to explain them, which frustrated Keira.
But Old Mrs. Horton was very firm. âGranddaughter-in-law, sheâs your mother.
You canât ignore your motherâ¦â
If Keira could, she really wished Mrs. Olsen was her motherâ¦
Keira lowered her eyes to hide the bitterness in them. ââ¦I know.â
She took Old Mrs. Horton back to the ward.
Lewis did not enter the room and only stood in the corridor.
Tom quickly came over. âBoss, we figured it out. Miss Olsen went to work at
that private restaurant again and ran into the Olsen familyâ¦
She went home to shower and change clothes, while Lewis and Tom thought
she was going on a date with her boyfriend!
Lewis smiled faintly and asked indifferently, âIs Horton Group not paying her
much?â
Otherwise, why would she go work elsewhere?
Tom answered, âThatâs not the case. Old Mrs. Horton made the arrangement! Maybe the work arranged by Jalen for her is too difficult, and sheâs afraid sheâll be fired?â
Keiraâs situation in the company was all under Tomâs supervision.
However, Lewis didnât think it was that simple. âWhat were the Olsen family doing at the private restaurant?â
Tom replied, âThey had arranged to meet Dr. South. Mr. Jake also went because
of this.â
âWhere is Dr. South?â
âHe didnât show up in the endâ¦â
A faint light flickered in Lewisâs deep eyes, and an idea began to form.
But he thought this idea was too absurd.
After a two-hour rest, Mrs. Olsen felt much better. She started coughing as she
spoke. âIsla, let Jake go home first.â
Hearing this, Islaâs expression turned slightly awkward.
Jake stayed here not because he was worried about Mrs. Olsen, but because he was here for Dr. South!
She hesitated and said, âMom, Dr. Southâ¦â
Mrs. Olsen realized what she meant and immediately said, âHand me the phone. I stood Dr. South up today. I need to give an explanation.â After she texted Dr. South and rearranged their meeting, Isla sent Jake out the door.
Isla said, âJake, donât worry. There wonât be any problems with Dr. South.â Jake said, âIsla, right now Horton Groupâs R&D department has a few hard nuts to crack, and they donât respect me at all. Jalen is one of them. As long as we can invite Dr. South to join us, Iâll make a great contribution to the R&D department and can gain a firm foothold. So, Dr. South is very important to me, you must convince him.â
âOk.â
The two were talking as they entered the elevator.
After they left, Keira came out of the corner.
She didnât want to confront Isla in front of Mrs. Olsen, for fear that Mrs. Olsen would get overly emotional and worsen her condition.
She arrived at the ward, pushed open the door, and entered.
Taylorâs face darkened immediately when he saw her. âWhat are you doing here?! Get out!â
Keiraâs eyes turned cold, and then Mrs. Olsenâs clear yet gentle voice rang out.
âIs it Keira? Let her come in.â
Taylor glared at Keira and warned her, âDonât upset Mrs. Olsen anymore!
âAs I said, it wasnât Keiraâs fault. I was just exhausted from not sleeping well for a few daysâ¦â
Mrs. Olsen nagged a bit, then held Keiraâs hand. âPoor child, you must have been frightened today, right?â
Although Mrs. Olsen was thin and didnât seem approachable, her hands were very warm. n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Keira smiled. âNo.â
âThatâs good. You should come home more often in the future.â
Mrs. Olsen lay on the bed and spoke in a kind voice. âAnd your husband, your mother said heâs a little punk, but I donât believe that. Keira, you have good taste and good judgment. Iâm sure the man you have chosen has his merits. Introduce him to me someday.â
Keira felt like crying. âOf course.â
From the day she got her marriage certificate, all she received was abuse and humiliation from others. Only from Mrs. Olsen could she hear such caring and concerned words.
Mrs. Olsen wanted to say something else, but she started coughing violently again.
Taylor said, âOkay, donât talk anymore. You need to rest.â
Keira stood up. She took a bottle of white pills from her pocket and put it in Mrs. Olsenâs hand. âThis is a cough suppressant that I⦠asked someone to buy. If you canât sleep at night, you can take one.â
âOkay.â
Keira didnât want to disturb Mrs. Olsenâs rest, so she said goodbye and left.
After she left, Mrs. Olsen looked at the bottle of medicine and sighed. âKeira still cares about me.â
However, Taylor disdainfully said, âWill someone who cares about you not come home to see you for ten years? How could you be tricked by a bottle of medicine from who knows which small clinic?!
He threw the bottle into the trash can. âI heard that Nora is developing a cough suppressant thatâs effective in clinical trials. Iâll find connections to get it for you!â
Mrs. Olsenâs eyes dimmed. âYou actually believe such rumors. Chronic neurogenic cough is a rare disease, who would bother developing a drug for it? Theyâll never make up for the costâ¦â
Taylor held her hand. âWe have to try. Youâre coughing all night and canât sleep. Itâs too uncomfortable. It hurts me to see you like thisâ¦â
Mrs. Olsen could only nod.
It was well into the night.
Mrs. Olsen suddenly started coughing violently again.
Although she was extremely tired, she just couldnât fall asleep.
She lay on her side, suppressing the itch in her throat, not wanting to wake up Taylor in the next room.
No one knew how desperate she was.
Chronic neurogenic cough couldnât be completely curedâ¦
The disease was getting worse and worse, and the anxiety from lack of sleep even made her have suicidal thoughts on many occasions.
If she wasnât so strong-willed, she might have killed herself a long time ago⦠But she didnât know how much longer she could hold onâ¦
Lately, she had been feeling weaker every single day, Perhaps she wouldnât live to see her daughter get married.
Mrs. Olsen was thinking pessimistically when her eyes suddenly fell on the bottle of medicine in the trash can.
Somehow, she picked up the bottle, opened it, took out a white pill, and put it in her mouthâ¦.
