Trajan stepped closer, his voice low and deliberate. âThe rival packâs wolves have breached our borders. Scouts spotted them less than a mile from here.â
My stomach turned. âHow many?
âToo many for comfort,â Trajan replied. âTheyâre testing our defenses, Aurora. This isnât a fullâblown attack yet. But theyâre waiting for something.â
âWaiting for me to break,â I muttered under my breath, to nobody in particular.
Daneâs voice, though low and strained, managed to override tension. âDonât let them. You. you canât give them that
satisfaction.â
I turned to him, still straddling a painful line between despair and determination. âDane, I just canât lose you, âI whispered through a cracked voice.
âYou wonât,â he managed, his effort draining the color from
him.
Trajan cleared his throat, the urgency in his voice slicing through the moment. âAurora, we need to act now. If theyâre this close, we donât have much time to decide our next move.â
I nodded, hardening my jaw. âWe wonât let them win,â I said firmly, turning to Trajan. âRally the council. We need to prepare for whateverâs coming.â
As Trajan left, Daneâs eyes found and latched onto mine. âAurora. promise me something.â
âWhat?â I whispered.
âPromise me you wonât lose yourself in this fight,â he whispered back.
Tears spilled over as I leaned down, pressing a kiss to his forehead.
âI promise,â I whispered, really not buying that one bit.
