âWhat do you want to eat?â
âI get to choose?â
âNot if you donât answer me within the next ten seconds.â
I blanked at Vincent, trying desperately to think of something I wanted to eat. Nothing was coming to mind. âUm, chicken?â I finally asked, more than said.
Vincent snorted. âChicken? Really?â
âI-I can choose something else then,â I murmured, biting my lip. Did he have to be such a jerk?
âOh come on, it was a joke. You know, since you act like a chicken.â Vincent rolled his eyes as he moved towards the fridge. âAre you always like that?â
âLike what?â
âSo passive.â
A frown crossed my face. âIâm not passive. I justââ
âShut up.â
I abruptly shut my mouth, grinding my teeth in annoyance. What a jerk!
âSee? Passive,â Vincent pointed out. âIf you werenât you wouldnât have shut up just then, would you?â
âActually, I would, since youâre a fricking vampire who could kill me if I didnât obey you!â I snapped back at him, feeling my cheeks warm up in embarrassment.
He smirked at me. âPassive and yet feisty. You donât get many vampires like that around here. Most are just flirtatious whores that want you because of your status.â
I blinked at his harsh words, yet amused face. âIâ¦â
âDo you want any seasoning on your chicken?â he asked, changing the subject.
âYou actually have chicken?â
He gave me an âare-you-stupid?â look. âItâs not like we try to starve to death. I thought you already knew we ate regular food too? Or are you as stupid as you look and forgot already?â
Would it kill him to be nice for three seconds? âIâd like seasoning⦠Please,â I added as a second thought. âSo if you guys eat human food, why do you need blood to survive?â
âWe donât make enough blood to keep ourselves alive,â Vincent responded simply.
That threw me off guard. âBut arenât you dead?â
Vincentâs head snapped towards me and he gave me the glare he gave me when we first met. My breath caught in my throat and I took a step back, suddenly terrified of the vampire before me. After a few seconds he set his jaw and relaxed, closing his eyes for a moment. I tried to relax as well, but found I couldnât calm my heart.
âWeâre not dead,â he told me calmly.
âY-youâre not?â
Without warning, he was in front of me, barely an inch away. My eyes grew wide as I took in his emerald orbs. His cool hand gripped my roughly. I tried to pull it away, but he held it tight, making me wince.
âFeel carefully,â he growled, pressing my palm to his chest, where his heart was supposed to be.
I held my breath, my eyes unable to break from his gaze. After a few moments, I grew confused. What was I supposed to be feeling for? His nonexistent heartbeat? Was this supposed to prove something? Why⦠A quiet gasp of surprise left my lips as I felt the tiniest, feeblest reverberation through his chest.
âI donât know who taught you about vampires,â Vincent started in a dangerously low voice. âBut whatever you do know, I can guarantee itâs wrong. Humans know nothing about us.â
âIâm sorry,â I breathed, unable to pull my hand away from his chest. In fact, I couldnât even move. Something was rooting me to the spot.
Vincent abruptly dropped my hand, flashing away from me. âDonât apologize,â he snapped. âItâs not your fault humanity is ignorant.â
I licked my lips, trying to make the dry feeling in my mouth disappear. âNo, I should apologize. Iâm just as benighted as every other human. Before I met you and your family, I just assumed vampires were exactly how they are portrayed in movies.â
âSparkly?â
I smiled. âI was thinking more 30 Days of Night than Twilight.â
â30 Days of Night is more correct,â Vincent responded flatly. âWhile it may not be completely correct, there are vampires that do live by brutally attacking humans. The rouges.â
âRouges?â
He gave me an irritated look. âLook, Iâm here to cook you dinner, not answer all your stupid questions.â
âWell sorry for asking stupid questions! You said yourself humans know nothing about your kind! I was just trying to learn something! What is with you? Youâre talkative one second and then the next youâre an arrogant jerk!â
Vincent scowled at me. âI think I liked you better when you were the timid mouse.â
I stared at him in outrage. âLook, I donât like you having to baby sit me just as much as you donât, but Iâm your responsibility! If we just argue all the time itâs not going to be a pleasant experience for either of us!â
âItâs hard not to argue with an idiot.â
âYou are such aââ
âVampires that donât follow our laws,â he cut me off, turning the knob on the oven so fast I barely caught it. âThatâs a rogue.â
I abruptly shut my mouth, cutting off any retort. Now he decides to answer my question. âAre rouges illegal?â
âYup.â
âDonât take this the wrong way,â I started slowly, debating whether I should ask my next question or not. âBut⦠Why do you have a heartbeat? Why is it so slow? I mean I understand youâre not dead. But if youâre not dead, whyâ¦?â
Vincent snapped the oven closed with a loud bang. I flinched at the loud noise. I hadnât even seen him open the oven. He came over to me again, stopping at an uncomfortable proximity. âI donât know the reason why our heartbeat is so slow, but itâs probably because we have much less blood than humans,â he told me. âThe reason as to why we have one is because we are alive. Itâs not like you can be born dead from a dead person. Thatâs more like a zombie.â
So vampires were born from other vampires⦠âWait a second.â
âNo what?â
âFiona mentioned she was human at one point,â I notified him, furrowing my eyebrows. âHow can sheââ
My air was unexpectedly cut off as Vincent slammed me against the wall, holding me by my neck. I gasped for air as he gave me another of his death glares. âDonât ever speak about that again.â
My eyes were beginning to water from my lack of oxygen. âI-I wonât,â I gasped, grasping at his hands. âLet me go!â
âVincent!â
Vincent immediately let me go and I collapsed to my knees, taking in deep breaths. Did he have to be so physical? I was going to die before this week was over if he kept up like that! Maybe even earlierâ I wouldnât be surprised if I ended up having a heart attack after one of his surprise attacks!
âEmily, are you okay?â a soft voice said from beside me.
My head snapped in the direction of the voice and I found myself staring at Sebastian. He gave me a concerned look, putting a hand to the small of my back, and helping me to stand. I rubbed my sore neck, silently praying there wouldnât be a bruise in the morning.
âWhat are you doing here?â I heard Vincent demand.
âI came to make sure Emily wasnât dead,â his brother responded, frowning. âI guess I came at the right time.â
I shook my head. âHe wasnât trying to kill me, Sebastian.â
âThen what exactly was going on?â
âHeâ¦â My voice caught as I remembered Vincentâs words. Would it count if I told Sebastian what we were talking about? It was better not to risk it. âHe was just showing me how strong vampires were because I told him he couldnât beat me in a wrestling match.â
Sebastianâs brow wrinkled in confusion. âYou were talking about wrestling?â
âI was planning on escaping,â I lied.
He sighed lightly. âEmily, thereâs no way to escape. I really am sorry, but you just canât go home right now.â
âI know,â I responded, frowning. I probably knew that better than he did.
âAs everything goes according to plan, youâll be out of here by this time next week,â he encouraged cheerfully. âIt wonât be that bad, I promise. That is of course as long as you donât ask me to make you dinner. Unless you like the taste of charcoal.â
âPlease,â Vincent muttered, rolling his eyes.
I ignored Vincent, feeling a grin slip onto my mouth as I stared at Sebastian. Why did he have to be such a good guy? âWell I donât hate it.â
He chuckled. âYouâre just saying that to make me feel better.â
âWouldnât that be a sight to see?â Vincent commented in an amused voice. âThe heir to the throne cooking dinner for a lowly human?â
âLowly?â I repeated, narrowing my eyes at him. Did vampires think they were better than humans or something?
He smirked back at me. âIf youâre the heir to a throne in human society, then forgive me, but since youâre obviously not, yes, youâre lowly.â
âYouâre really a jerk!â
âI take that as a compliment.â
Sebastian sighed again. âEm, just ignore Vince. I think his status is getting to his head.â
âItâs better than someone who acts like they donât have any at all,â Vincent snapped back at his brother.
I glanced back and forth between the brothers, feeling an awkward tension.
âBut then again, I guess you do since you donât really go near Fiona in public.â
âThatâs for her own safety,â Sebastian growled, suddenly looking furious. âAnd you know it, Vincent.â
Vincent scoffed. âOkay.â
âNo wonder you werenât chosen as the heir. Juvenile doesnât begin to describe your attitude,â Sebastian responded smoothly.
âWhy donât you leave before youâre caught with my mistake?â
My eyes widened when I realized he was talking about me. Then my attention shifted from Vincent to his brother, who looked guilty. Our gazes met and he gave me an apologetic look.
âIs there something Iâm missing hereâ¦?â Besides the fact that you two obviously donât get along well.
âYouâre bad for our image,â Vincent told me flatly.
The corners of my lips twitched in annoyance. âOh. Weâll sorry.â
Sebastian shook his head. âItâs not your fault, Em. No one blames you at allâ¦â He trailed off, sending a meaningful look towards Vincent. âAlthough there are those who didnât agree when they heard a human was staying with the Rutherfords, there were those who understood.â
âOh⦠Okay,â I responded slowly, wondering why he was bothering with telling me this. I didnât really care what vampires thought of me.
âDonât worry about it,â he continued, obviously not noticing my lack of interest. He ruffled my head for a moment. âWe wonât let anything happen.â
That threw me off guard. âWait? What do you mean by that?â
âIâ¦â
âChickenâs done,â Vincent grunted and a second later the oven dinged. âYou can leave now, Sebastian. Iâve got her covered.â
Sebastian looked relieved. âIâll see you later then. Bye, Emily.â
âWait!â I called as he flashed away from the room. For a second I was too shocked to move my eyes away from the empty place Sebastian had been occupying moments before. Vampires were fast.
âDo you need salt or pepper?â
âYou have that?â
Vincent gave me a condescending look. âDonât you have salt and pepper at your house?â
âWell yeah, sure, butââ
âWeâre no different here,â he told me flatly, sticking his hand into the oven. âSo stop looking so shocked whenââ
âWhat are you doing?â I demanded, stepping forwards and trying to yank his hand out of the oven. âYou donât have a mitt on!â
For a second Vincent looked at me in surprise, and then he chuckled, pulling out the chicken pan with his bare hand. âWe donât need oven mitts, stupid.â
âMy name is Emily,â I snapped.
âThatâs stupid backwards.â
I blanked. âWait, it is?â
He snickered.
I scowled, letting go of his arm. âYouâre a jerk, you know that? Shouldnât you try being a little nicer seeing as how Iâm a guest here?â
âGuest?â he repeated, cocking his head to the side. âI was under the impression that you considered yourself a prisoner.â
âYour mom told me not to think that way, so I wonât. And in that case, guests should be treated courteously.â
Vincent shrugged, stabbing the piece of chicken with a fork and putting it on a plate for me. âYou want courteous?â
âYes.â
âThen go find Sebastian.â With that, he thrust the plate he was carrying into my hand. âIâm sure heâd love your company.â
I gritted my teeth. âNever mind. Iâm going to find Fiona.â
Vincent paused, glancing at me over his shoulder. âYou are?â
âThatâs what I said.â
He nodded approvingly. âOkay. Iâll show you the way then.â
I cocked an eyebrow. âWhy so helpful now?â
âFiona could use a friend,â he responded simply. âEven one as stupid like you will make her happy.â
âIâm not stupid!â
âStupid enough to get yourself kidnapped.â
âBy fricking paranormal beasts!â
He gave me a curious look. âParanormal beasts⦠I think I like that.â
A heavy sigh escaped my lips. You really couldnât put out a narcissist. Vincent let out a loud laugh, gesturing for me to follow him down the hallway. I obeyed him, clutching my plate tightly so I wouldnât accidentally drop it. With the amount of twists and turns we took while walking down the hallway, I knew Iâd never be able to find my way back to the kitchen or my bedroom. A frown took its place on my face when I realized Iâd have to ask Vincent for help.
Without warning, Vincent stopped, effectively tree stumping me. He didnât seem to notice. Oblivious to my annoyed look, he rapped on the door we were in front of three times consecutively. Not even five seconds later the door flew open and Fiona appeared, her eyes brightening as they landed on me.
âEmily!â
âHello to you too,â Vincent muttered.
Fiona grinned at him. âHi, Vivi.â
I waited for a moment, expecting Vincent to snap at her, but he didnât. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Didnât he hate when people called him that? How come he wasnât yelling at Fiona?
âWhat are you guys doing here?â Fiona inquired when she realized neither of us was going to speak up.
I held up the plate in my hand. âDo you mind if I keep you some company?â
âSick of Vincent already?â
âItâs more like the other way around,â Vincent interjected.
âHey!â
Fiona laughed. âIâd love to take her off your hands, Vince. I havenât had any girl time in a very long timeâ¦â
Vincent held up his hands. âThatâs my cue to leave. Donât cause too much trouble. And stupid?â
I glared at him. âDonât call me stupid!â
âTry not to be too much of an idiot.â
I gritted my teeth as Vincent smirked at me. In the blink of an eye he was gone and Fiona was ushering me inside her room. For a second I was taken aback as bright pink entered my vision. I blinked, trying to adjust my eyes to the color. Fiona definitely took girly to an extreme in her room. Almost everything was pink and white, from the carpet, to the walls, to the bedspread, to the window curtains. It was almost like Valentineâs Day!
She caught me staring and blushed. âEr⦠Itâs a little girly.â
I pressed my lips together to keep from laughing. âA little?â
âI hope you donât mind!â
I shook my head. âI donât mind at all!â
She gave me a relieved smile. âGood. When I was alive I was brought up as a boy would, so I never really got to experience the girly side of things⦠I really missed out.â
âYeah,â I responded distractedly. When she was alive⦠Curiosity bubbled up in me, but I hastily forced it away. If Vincent had a problem talking about Fiona, I was sure Fiona would also have one. It was better not to tread in dark water.
âSo do you want to play Barbie?â
I blinked at her. âUmâ¦â
She laughed, rolling her eyes. âIâm kidding, Emily. Why donât you eat? We can watch some T.V too.â She gestured towards the wall, where a gigantic flat screen was.
My jaw nearly dropped. âThatâs bigger than my house!â
âYou must have a very small house then,â she commented, her eyes as wide as saucers. âIâm sorry.â
âNot literally,â I responded, trying not to laugh.
âOh⦠I knew that.â She smiled sheepishly. âSo⦠Up for some T.V?â
I nodded. âSounds good. Itâs nice to do something normal.â
Fiona grinned. âWeâll do lots of normal things together. Trust me, being here will be no different than being at home⦠Well, besides the constant risk of being attacked by a hungry vampire.â
I made a face. âThanks for reminding me.â
âAnytime,â she responded, slapping my back none too gently. âNow take a seat.â
