Chapter 106 Liam Has A Scheme âYou scared me, Bernie! Are you all right?â Jennifer anxiously examined her daughterâs body.
âIâm fine, Mom. No need to worry about me,â reassured Bernice.
âCaptain Quickwood informed me that those people were Rockyâs men. Do you know why they captured you?â
Patrick and his wife had arrived outside of Josephineâs old home, concerned about the awakened Bernice. Avoiding their eye contact, Bernice answered, âI donât know. Maybe itâs just an ordinary kidnapping case.â
In reality, she had already figured out what was going on when she woke up and realized she had been abducted by Rocky.
She had a feeling it was because Finnegan smashed up Ark Bar, but she pretended not to know anything.
It was to prevent her parents from blaming Finnegan for her kidnapping.
Cindy, who had accompanied them, turned back and stared at Finneganâs ruined home. The reason she recognized the place was that she had dropped by with Bernice twice before. âStrange. Why did they bring you to Finneganâs place after capturing you?â
âThis is Finneganâs home?â Patrick frowned, genuinely unaware of that fact.
Cindy nodded. âThat right there is Finneganâs home, though itâs destroyed. Bernie and I visited this place. twice before. I wonder why Bernie was brought here. Is it a coincidence?â
As the leader of a massive corporation, Patrick was, naturally, no typical businessman.
A hypothesis formed in his mind as he observed Berniceâs odd behavior and listened to Cindyâs words.
Nevertheless, he didnât give voice to his speculation. âMaybe this is just a coincidence. Rockyââ
At that moment, Liam arrived with Haily and interrupted, âThis isnât a coincidence, Mr. Zimmerman!
Bernice was kidnapped because of Finnegan!â
Berniceâs eyebrow twitched. âWhat nonsense are you saying, Mr. Sable?â
Patrick narrowed his eyes at the new arrival. âWhy are you here, Mr. Sable?â
Though he knew Finnegan might have been the cause of Berniceâs abduction, he still disliked Liam more.
However, Liam didnât seem to detect Patrickâs disdain for him. âThe moment I learned of Bernieâs disappearance, I employed my familyâs connections to locate her. Thatâs why I came here as soon as I received news of her whereabouts, Mr. Zimmerman.â
Realization dawned on Jennifer. âOh, so itâs thanks to you that the police dispatched so many officers.
tonight. Even the airport and the train stations were on lockdown.â
Patrickâs expression softened slightly. âThank you for the aid, Mr. Sable. If I owe you a favor today, Iâm willing to pay it back.â
Liam felt smug hearing that. I knew calling Zander was the right choice. Heâs probably why the operation tonight was massive.
r However, he hid his true feelings well and spoke humbly. âSetting aside my feelings for Bernice, Iâm her childhood friend and classmate of four years, after all. Thereâs no need for you to thank me, Mr. and Mrs. Zimmerman.â
Romona was speechless as she watched that scene unfold from the side. What a shameless man.
While the commissioner was the one who led the operation tonight, it was thanks to Finneganâs presence that Reynard and Adam acted. They didnât do it because of Liam.
Despite her thoughts, she didnât voice her opinion because she was feeling sour at the high possibility that she would lose her bet to Finnegan.
In other words, she wanted to watch someone else claim credit for his efforts as a way of preemptively getting back at him.
âYou sure care about Bernie deeply, Mr. Sable,â remarked Cindy. âAlthough, what do you mean when you said Bernieâs kidnapping is Finneganâs fault?â
Bernice frowned. âThatâs not what happened, Cin.â
âIâm not making it up. Bernice. Captain Quickwood can prove Iâm right,â asserted Liam.
Romona was taken aback as her thoughts were still dwelling on how miserable Finnegan would feel if he learned someone else had claimed credit for his work. âHow?â
Of course, she knew the truth about what happened.
However, that didnât matter because she be telling the press about Finneganâs involvement.
It was a direct request from Reynard and Adam.
As such, she couldnât possibly mention Finneganâs name.
Liam asked, âA few days ago, Finnegan wrecked Ark Bar, severely injured Rockyâs little brother, and caused Rocky to be fired. Moreover, Finnegan had to provide compensation to quell the matter. Am I right?â
Hailey had uncovered that intel not too long ago.
Hence, he messaged the news to Cindy first so that the latter could bring up that topic at a suitable time.
After that, he would defame Finnegan.
Unbeknownst to him, a complicated expression settled on Haileyâs countenance. In fact, guilt was present in her eyes.
Upon hearing that, Patrick frowned more intensely. âIs that true, Captain Quickwood?â
Panic exploded in Berniceâs mind because she knew it was, for the most part, the truth.
Romona shot a puzzled look at Liam. âItâs true, but that doesnât prove Finnegan is the cause of tonightâs incident.â
There were two discrepancies in Liamâs statement, which she took notice of After all, Rockyâs little brother had died, not been injured, and Finnegan didnât compensate anyone.
It wouldnât be difficult for the Sable family to unearth the truth. They could even ask Tyrone for the facts.
Yet, Liam was altering the details of the incident.
Of course, Romona only learned the facts during the past few days. Thus, her knowledge of the matter was, initially, similar to what Liam knew.
Cindy, who had been bribed by Liam, continued, âFinneganâs a scumbag. Bernice didnât mind his ordinary background, his incompetence, and his lack of education. Despite that, heâs still causing trouble for her everywhere. If not for Mr. Sable, Bernie wouldâve been in danger because of Finnegan!â
Liam put on a kind facade. âNo need to be so harsh with your words, Cindy. Perhaps he merely drank too much back then.â
While speaking, he peeked at Patrick and Jennifer.
When he spotted their grimaces, he grew giddy because he knew his plan had worked.
Abruptly, Bernice questioned, âIf you knew your girlfriend was bullied, what would you do, Mr. Sable?â
Liam thought Bernice was testing him.
Hence, he declared passionately, âIf you were my girlfriend, Iâd defend you from any bullies no matter what, even if my life is on the line!â
Cindy added, âYouâre so much better than that Finnegan, Mr. Sable.â
No expression was visible on Berniceâs countenance. âYou say youâre willing to protect your girlfriend regardless of the consequences. In that case, do you think itâs Finneganâs fault for offending Rocky to shield me from harm?â
What? The edges of Liamâs lips twitched as he reflexively glanced at Hailey. Bernice was at the bar too?
Hailey nodded subtly.
Consequently, Liam scowled because he had thought Finnegan was acting on his own at the bar.
Of course, he couldnât take back his words, so he changed his plan. âI thought he was the only one there. Regardless, how could he take you to a place like a bar? Doesnât he know how dangerous and messy that kind of place is?â
Before anyone could reply, Finnegan, who had arrived a few minutes ago, stated, âYouâre crossing the line. Mr. Sable!â
if Shaking his head, he approached the group. âDid no one tell you that you shouldnât comment on a matter you donât have all the details? Otherwise, you may fail to denigrate your target and accidentally expose yourself as a snake in the grass instead.â
Bernice beamed and hurried over to grab Finneganâs hand. âYouâre here!â
