Chapter 89 The Mysterious Bennett Sanchez Bennett wasnât tall and had tan skin. He looked physically tough, evident from the bulging muscles underneath his tank top.
More importantly, he appeared to be in his early thirties.
Cognizant of what Finnegan and Logan were thinking, Stephen explained, âMr. Sanchez might look young but is already in his forties. I didnât believe it initially until he showed me his ID card.â
After putting down the roasted suckling pig, Bennett broke into a warm smile. âStephen, you should just call me Bennett, as Iâm only older than you by a little more than ten years.â
âI canât do that. Nancy is like a sister to me. How can I address you by name?â Stephen frantically replied.
When Jace made a face, Stephen pretended to be oblivious to it.
In the meantime, Finnegan gave Bennett a thoughtful look before complimenting him, âIâm impressed by how well you have maintained your youth, Bennett!â
While Stephen and the rest, including Logan, were clueless as to what was going on, Finnegan, who was skilled at physiognomy, saw through Bennett easily.
The latter and Nancy were not father and daughter at all.
In fact, Finnegan could tell that Bennett was only thirty-five.
Since Nancy is twenty-one this year, thereâs no way sheâs younger than her father by fourteen years, is there? Itâs clear that Bennett is a man with a checkered history.
Bennett maintained a humble smile as he nodded at Finnegan. âWorking hard all the time does make me look younger than my age. Now, let me carve the pig open. You guys better back off so that the oil doesnât splatter on you.â
While speaking, Bennett pulled out what looked like a carving knife from his waist. However, the blade looked longer than usual and resembled a special-looking blade instead.
Underneath the layer of oil that covered the blade, one could faintly make out some carved motifs on its surface.
Only when Finnegan concentrated his spiritual energy in his eyes could he tell that the design of the motifs were actually flames In addition, Finnegan could sense a murderous aura from the blade scif jones.
Watching him work was like observing an artist in his element.
In the meantime, a strange glint flashed across Finneganâs eyes as he turned toward Logan.
The latter was coincidentally looking in Finneganâs direction with an equally shocked look in his gaze.
It was obvious to them that Bennettâs carving skill was certainly not honed in the kitchen.
Nevertheless, the two men nodded discreetly at each other before pretending as if nothing had happened and continuing to watch Bennett work.
In less than three minutes, the suckling pig that was more than twenty pounds in weight had been carved clean, leaving nothing but its bones on the tray.
Jace couldnât help but clap. âBro, Iâm impressed with your carving skill!â
mean by No sooner had Jace spoken than Stephen delivered him a punch. âWhat do you âbro?â Call him Mr.
Sanchez. Otherwise, youâll make me look like Iâm your junior.â
âDonât worry about it,â Bennett replied while wiping his knife clean. âAn address is just a formality. It doesnât matter how you address me. Anyway, Iâll not interrupt your dinner any further. If you need anything, just let Nancy know.â
Finnegan felt a sudden urge to get him to stay. âBennett, since there arenât many customers this evening, why donât you and Nancy join us for dinner? Nancy and my sister are classmates, so weâre not exactly strangers.â
Upon hearing the invitation, Bennett turned toward Nancy, who nodded in response.
âDad, heâs Rhiannonâs elder brother, Finnegan.â
âOh, youâre Rinaâs brother. In that case, please wait for a moment. Ill bring out the roasted duck I was saving for dinner Once Bennett was no longer in sight. Finnegan casually asked, âNancy why donât I see your mom around.â
Nancyâs expression darkened as she answered. âMy mom brought me to my father sade when I was nine and passed away not long after that âIâm sorry, I didnât know.â
Nancy responded with a slight smile, âItâs no big deal.â
Finnegan probed further, âIn that case, does that mean that you werenât living with him.
before that?â
âThatâs right.â Nancy nodded as she explained without reservations, âI lived with my mom before nine and had never seen my father then. When I asked her about it, all she told me was that my father was busy with work.â
The reply caused Finnegan to rule out a terrible possibility in his mind.
It seems Bennett isnât some pervert. Nevertheless, heâs only older than Nancy by fourteen years. Why is he willing to take on the role of her dad? More importantly, Nancy doesnât seem to know the truth at all.
With Bennett and his daughter at the table, Finnegan and his companions were a little more restrained.
They simply behaved as if it was a gathering between ordinary friends.
Most of the time, Finnegan was busy observing Bennett discreetly, hoping to find out the secret the latter was hiding.
In spite of that, all he saw was Bennett behaving normally, as if he and Nancy were really father and daughter.
The sight before him only served to intrigue him further.
âFinnegan, have you heard?â
Just as Finnegan was wondering whether he should ask Nancy about it, the innocent Nancy spoke with a solemn expression.
Collecting his thoughts, Finnegan asked, âHeard what?â
At the same time, Stephen was equally concerned. âNancy, did something happen?â
âNot really.â Nancy eked out an awkward smile. âItâs just that there was a car accident that killed four people a few days ago. Two of them were my dormmates, and another was one of their brothers. I heard the scene was so gruesome that by the time the rescuers arrived, everyone was burnt to a crisp.â
Evidently, she was talking about Dexter, his sister. Larry, and Nandra Finneganâs lips twitched slightly before he quickly recovered his composure âThatâs really unfortunate, but Ria didnât tell me about at â
it Nancy remarked, âShe probably didnât because she thinks you donât know them well.â
At that moment, Logan couldnât help but shoot Finnegan a look.
While everyone was oblivious to it, he had heard Reynard mention that Finnegan wanted the victims dead before he arrived in Jadeborough.
This guy is really good at pretending!
After shooting Logan an unnoticed glare, Finnegan raised his glass. âThis is such a wonderful feast.
Letâs drink another-â
All of a sudden, the sound of something sharp could be heard streaking through the air.
Eyes narrowed, Finnegan turned his palm around and sent the glass in his hand flying just as Logan realized something was amiss.
Clink⦠Crashâ¦
A loud crash was heard as the wine glass shattered into pieces before falling onto the floor. Amidst its shattered shards was a fifteen-centimeter-long black steel nail.
In that split second, the unassuming Bennett suddenly grabbed Nancyâs hand and swiftly stood up, shielding her behind him.
The humble look in his eyes was quickly replaced by a piercing one.
However, nervousness and anxiety quickly took its place.
Cocking his brows, Finnegan exchanged glances with Logan.
However, they pretended not to notice Bennettâs reaction as they stood up and looked behind them, detecting a familiar aura. âIt looks like the Chomsky family has no intention to submit!
Behind a cluster of mango trees, Eleazar, at the head of the Goldberg Five, emerged from the darkness.
Dressed in black, the insidious-looking Clarabelle sneered, âIt looks like youâre quite skilled. No wonder you made both my juniors pay a heavy price.â
Behind them, a bodyguard of the Chomsky family wheeled Oscar out The sight of Finnegan filled Oscarâs eyes with uncontrollable hatred. âFinnegan, you will soon meet your end!â
â
