Chapter 11: CHAPTER NINE: The Bet

The Guy in My Spanish classWords: 5828

Through the point of view of Beatrix

The next morning, I get dressed quickly and head to the cafeteria for breakfast.

It's busy in the hallways as usual when I head down, but I'm still able to manage and make it there in one piece.

For breakfast, I decide on grabbing a croissant and a coffee this morning. The cafeteria is a bit more crowded this morning, so I take my breakfast to the library.

I eat my breakfast while going over a couple more Spanish notes from yesterday, familiarizing myself with the terms, grammar and going over the subjects that had been a little difficult for me.

While I'm studying, my phone buzzes with a text message. I check it, and see that Anthony texted me.

'Did you eat breakfast yet? I'm in the cafeteria right now and I don't see you.'

I type my response before hitting send.

'I woke up early to study a little and get myself some breakfast, I'm in the library where we were yesterday'

I blow out a huff of air as I sit up, going back to reading my notes in silence.

When the bell rings, I gather up all my things and leave out of the library to head for my homeroom.

Getting through the crowded hallways is always a challenge, but I'm able to get to my homeroom before the late bell tolls.

I take my seat and look out the window. Today the field is barren and empty, devoid of the football players I had seen yesterday.

The bell rings, and the door swings open as the students begin to file into the classroom.

"Anthony, my boy!" I hear someone exclaim with a laugh, making me look up at the mention of the familiar name.

Anthony walks through the door, and I subtly watch as he high fives and greets a couple guys standing by the door.

Today he's wearing a plain white shirt with a gray checkered vest over it and a pair of baggy ripped jeans to pair.

He looks good today, but he always does.

Anthony's eyes fall on me and I offer him a small wave. He waves back before going back to conversing with his friends.

"So, are you coming to my party tonight? Ali's been bugging me about inviting you all morning." I pull out my phone and I eavesdrop as I type up a message to my mother.

There's some silence before Anthony says something to the guy.

"I don't know Kev, maybe. I've got a test today in Spanish that I need to pass. If I do, then I'll come." He responds, and I send a text to my mother, still listening.

"Where are you going?" The guy asks him, making me look up from my phone.

Anthony walks over to my desk and pulls a chair over to sit down.

"What are you doing?" I ask, confused.

He laughs at my expression, and I put my phone down, giving him a weird look.

"Are you ready for the test today?" He asks me.

"Of course, I am. Are you?" I turn the question back to him, and Anthony nods his head.

"I am, and I'm very confident I'll be getting the highest score in class." He proudly boasts, making me roll my eyes at his over confidence.

"Mm, no. I'm getting the highest score, nothing beats my studying methods." I say to Anthony, earning myself a small smirk from him.

He leans over the desk, and I break out into a small smile, my expression one of interest.

"Wanna bet on that?" He offers.

"Depends .. what am I getting if I win?" I ask him, leaning over as well.

Anthony eyes twinkle with mischief and I watch his smirk grow wider when he tilts his head. His dark curls bounce as he starts pretending to think for a minute.

"How about a sleepover and dinner? The winner has to cook and host it at their place too." He says, and it's my turn to pretend I'm thinking.

I pause and stroke my chin for dramatic effect as he watches with an attentive expression.

After a minute, I finally give him my answer.

"Fine. But if you lose you have to have dessert too." I state my ultimatum, and he agrees with a laugh.

With our bet decided, Anthony gives me his hand and we shake on it.

The bell rings out and I stand up.

Anthony puts the seat back as I begin collecting my things and getting ready to leave. We walk to the door and once we're in the hallway he turns to me.

"Could I walk you to your next class?" He offers, and I gladly accept with a smile.

We walk side by side down the crowded hallways, and after a minute of silence passes, he speaks again.

"Are you a party person? I mean .. do you like going to parties?" He asks, making me chuckle. I shake my head no, pulling on my backpack straps nervously.

"No. Not really .. why?" I question, turning to face him.

Anthony's expression is serious, and I watch him run a hand through the mess of his dark curls before he answers me.

"One of my friends is having a party after classes today. I .. would you like to come?" He proposes, as we stop at my classroom.

I lean against the door and give him a once over, trying to read his expression.

My eyes travel down to his neck, and I notice that today he's wearing a silver necklace around his neck.

It's small and has an even smaller charm dangling from the chain.

I let my eyes travel further up to his ears and notice that the right one is adorned with a silver studded piercing.

"I don't know, Anthony." I say, my tone unsure as I look back to his face. At my answer he doesn't grow disappointed or sad, instead he nods for me to continue.

"I'm not sure I feel comfortable enough here to go to a social outing like party. And I don't have-I wouldn't even know anyone there.." The excuse is valid, but I still feel slightly bad about turning the offer from Anthony down.

"It's alright, B. If it's not something you want to do yet, that's okay. I'll see you at lunch?" Anthony doesn't take my rejection of his offer to heart, and it's something I can appreciate.

Most people I knew would've gotten upset for not wanting to go.

"Yes, I'll see you at lunch." I confirm, opening the door to my classroom. Anthony nods, and with that, he's walking back down the hallway to his class.
