Chapter 21
The Lunatic's Redemption: Surviving A Romance Novel
In their shared dormitory, Milo flopped dramatically onto Adreloâs bed, arms spread wide, letting out an exaggerated groan.
âWhy are you whining again?â
Adrelo asked as he entered the room, raising an eyebrow.
Milo shot up, clinging to Adreloâs arm.
âHey! What are you whining about? Hey! Let go of me!â
âYouâre so mean!â Milo wailed, fake tears streaming down his face as he sniffled loudly.
âTell me! Who have you been seeing lately? Waaaah, you donât even care about me anymore!â
He punctuated his theatrics by wiping his invisible tears on Adreloâs sleeve.
âWhaâ? No one!â Adrelo protested, yanking his arm away. His ears reddened slightly.
âNow let go of me, you duckling!â
Milo straightened up with a mock-serious expression, his dramatic antics fading into a sharp glare.
âBrother,â he said menacingly, his tone low and accusing,
âwho have you been seeing lately? I feel like youâre going out with someone, seeing how late youâve been coming back to the dormitory.â
âWhat theâdonât make it sound like that!â
Adrelo snapped, his face heating up further.
Milo smirked, leaning closer.
âThen why are you always back so late, hmm? So, you were meeting up with someone! Hehe.â
Adrelo groaned, his patience wearing thin as Milo teased him relentlessly. After several minutes of Miloâs prodding, Adrelo finally had enough. With a well-placed nudge, he pushed Milo off his bed and onto the floor.
âOuch!â Milo yelped, clutching his side as he dramatically rolled onto his back.
âThat hurts! Youâre such a meanie, young master Adrelo!â
Adrelo crossed his arms, glaring down at him.
âHumph! If you donât stop your whining, Iâm telling you, Iâll snap you into two and bring back the infamous Adrelo right this instant.â
Milo immediately sat up, raising his hands in mock surrender. âOkay, okay, Iâll stop!â he said quickly. But his curiosity didnât wane.
âBut seriously, where are you disappearing off to after classes? Iâve been looking for you everywhere! Do you know how much my feet sting after searching all over campus for you?â
Adrelo rolled his eyes.
âI was just in a certain room, doing some stuff.â
ââStuff,â huh?â Milo repeated, narrowing his eyes suspiciously.
âAnd by âstuff,â you meanâ¦?â
âSleeping,â Adrelo said flatly.
âIâm not a fool,â Milo shot back, crossing his arms.
Adrelo ignored him, busying himself with tidying his desk.
...
Miloâs gaze narrowed as he leaned against the bedframe, studying Adrelo closely.
âHmm⦠come to think of it, I overheard a certain first-year student looking for you earlier.â
Adrelo stiffened but kept his face neutral, side-eyeing Milo as if to warn him not to go any further.
Milo gasped theatrically, clutching his chest.
âNo⦠no way! Youâyou replaced me with the Hummingbird of the Fernhart family?!â He flung himself onto the bed with mock devastation.
âWaaah, that hurts, man!â
âShut up,â Adrelo muttered, rubbing his temples.
âWait, so you and him have been hanging out lately?â Milo sat up again, his curiosity renewed.
âDude, really? Do you even know who that guy is? Thatâs the famous Hummingbird of the Academy!â He began rattling off facts with growing excitement.
âIâve heard so many rumors about himâhow beautiful his voice is, how his face is practically sculpted by the gods. And get this, in his first month here, heâs already won over the music professors and gained a whole crowd of fans, especially among the first years!â
Adreloâs face twitched slightly at Miloâs rambling, but he said nothing.
Milo leaned closer, lowering his voice dramatically.
âBut I also heard that his brother is super protective of him. Like, crazy protective. Youâd better watch your back if youâre hanging out with him.â
Adrelo remained quiet, pretending to be absorbed in arranging his books, but a faint, reluctant smile tugged at his lips as he listened to Milo gush about Elias. He couldnât argue with anything Milo saidâElias really was remarkable.
Milo noticed the quiet smile and gasped again.
âWait. Donât tell me⦠are you smiling right now?â
âNo, Iâm not,â Adrelo replied instantly, his tone defensive.
âYou are! You totally are!â Milo crowed, pointing a finger at him.
âGo to bed, you duckling,â
Adrelo muttered, grabbing a pillow and chucking it at Miloâs face.
The room filled with laughter and Miloâs exaggerated protests as the teasing continued late into the night.
****
The next morning.
Adrelo and Milo walked into their classroom together, settling into their usual seats. Milo, however, was unusually quiet. He was staring unabashedly at the green-haired boy seated a few rows aheadâLucien Fernhart, the brother of Elias.
Adrelo followed Miloâs gaze and immediately sighed. He smacked the back of Miloâs head without warning.
âOw!â Milo yelped, clutching his head.
âWhat was that for?!â
âStop staring at him like that,â Adrelo said, rolling his eyes.
âYouâre making it weird.â
Milo pouted dramatically.
âI wasnât staring. I was observing.â
âObserving what? How not to embarrass yourself in public?â
âExcuse you, young master Adrelo,â Milo said, straightening his posture mockingly.
âI was just appreciating his⦠unique hair color! You donât see green every day, you know.â
Adrelo raised an eyebrow.
âThatâs your excuse? Youâre one bad pick-up line away from being kicked out of the classroom.â
Milo grinned, unfazed.
âCome on, admit it. Heâs got that mysterious, brooding older-brother vibe, doesnât he? Like, the kind you read about in novelsâ
Adrelo smirked but shook his head.
âYouâre hopeless.â
Milo leaned closer, lowering his voice dramatically.
âBut seriously, thatâs Eliasâs brother, right? Does he know youâve been hanging out with his sibling? Maybe heâs silently judging you for corrupting the pure and innocent Hummingbird.â
Adrelo scoffed, but his ears turned faintly pink.
âShut up, Milo.â
Milo snickered.
âOh, Iâm so telling him youâre scared of him. I bet heâd love to know.â
Adrelo groaned. âJust focus on class, you duckling.â
After class, Adrelo spotted Gareth leaning against the wall near the hallway, arms crossed, his scowl deeper than usual.
âGareth!â
Adrelo called out cheerfully, walking over.
The stocky boy turned his head slightly but didnât bother replying.
âHowâs life treating you, roommate?â
Adrelo asked, unfazed by Garethâs pointed glare.
âFine,â Gareth muttered, clearly uninterested.
Adrelo leaned against the wall beside him, arms crossed to mimic Garethâs stance.
âYou know, for someone who spends so much time scowling, youâd think youâd run out of face muscles by now.â
Gareth shot him a warning look.
âWhat do you want?â
âNothing much,â Adrelo said casually, inspecting his nails.
âJust wondering how youâve been since you started ignoring me like I donât exist. Is it because Iâm too charming for you to handle?â
Gareth gritted his teeth.
âLeave me alone, Dierre.â
Adrelo grinned.
âAw, come on, donât be like that. I miss the good old days when youâd chase me down for sneaking snacks into the dorm.â
âThat wasnât âsneaking,ââ Gareth growled.
âYou set the stove on fire.â
âAnd who saved the day? Youâre welcome, by the way,â Adrelo said smugly.
Garethâs eye twitched.
âYou almost got us expelled.â
âAlmost. Key word there,â Adrelo teased, stepping in front of him.
âAdmit it, Gareth. You missed babysitting me.â
The glare Gareth gave him couldâve rivaled a death spell.
âThis isnât the same Adrelo Iâve known for two years. Whatâs gotten into you?â
Adrelo shrugged, smirking.
âMaybe Iâve just realized how fun it is to see you snap. Youâre like a grumpy teddy bear.â
Garethâs jaw tightened, and his fists clenched at his sides.
âDonât test me, Dierre.â
âOh, but I love a good challenge,â Adrelo said, chuckling.
Arcanis Colosseum
Their bickering continued as they made their way to the academyâs gymnasium, known as the Arcanis Colosseum. The sprawling space was designed for students to practice magic, hold sparring matches, and train for combat scenarios.
As soon as they arrived, Gareth broke away from Adrelo and headed toward a group of athletic-looking students gathered near the practice dummies.
âWait, youâre ditching me already?â
Adrelo called after him, feigning hurt.
Gareth ignored him, joining the group, who greeted him with nods and quick handshakes.
Adrelo stayed back, leaning against the entrance. He observed the scene with mild curiosity.
The students were practicing spells in between casual chatter, their movements precise and disciplined. Some of them seemed to be testing their strength with melee weapons enchanted with magical runes.
âInteresting crowd,â
Adrelo muttered to himself, his gaze flickering back to Gareth.
Despite his scowl and grumpy demeanor, Gareth seemed completely at ease among the group. His laugh, though rare, was surprisingly hearty as one of the students cracked a joke.
Adrelo smirked.
âWho knew the grump could be so popular?â
Crossing his arms, he decided to stay and observe for a while longer, the teasing plans for later already forming in his mind.
****
Adrelo walked through the school hallway, his footsteps echoing softly in the quiet space. He didnât bother sparing a glance at the other students lingering nearby, even as he caught snippets of murmured conversations that trailed in his wake.
âDid you hear? The first prince and the second prince are leaving tomorrow,â one student whispered to another.
âYeah, theyâre heading to Nordheimska Valorant Academy for the traditional visit. Itâs part of the lead-up for the Eirwinter Trials, right?â
âExactly. Four months from now, weâll see which academy comes out on top. The northern academyâs students are always so impressive!â
Adrelo raised an eyebrow at the mention of Nordheimska Valorant Academy, the prestigious northern school known for producing battle-hardened mages. The Eirwinter Trials, if he recalled correctly, was a grueling inter-academy tournament showcasing the strongest students from the various magical schools.
He sighed. âGreat,â he muttered under his breath.
The casual reminder of the first princeâAzekeian Luxein Geovri Breneille, the golden boy destined for the throne and the female leadâs ideal partnerâmade his chest tighten slightly. Not out of jealousy, of course. It was just the knowledge that, soon after the princeâs return from this traditional visit, the female leadâs story would truly begin.
âThe clockâs ticking,â
Adrelo murmured to himself, glancing briefly at the floor as he walked. He didnât have anything against the first prince personally, but the idea of being around himâor, worse, somehow getting entangled in the inevitable love storyâmade his skin crawl.
His thoughts shifted to the second prince, Luxecio Azekian Geovri Breneille, the so-called gentle prince. Unlike his older brother, Luxecio rarely basked in the spotlight, opting instead for quiet diplomacy and charm. If anyone could soften the tension in a room, it was him.
Adrelo hummed thoughtfully.
âWell, at least heâs not as terrifying as the third princeâ¦â
Then, his mind wandered to Dennielle Azekian Luxein Geovri Breneille, the infamous fourth prince.
A shiver ran down his spine at the mere thought of him. It wasnât even that Dennielle had done anything to him recentlyâit was just his aura. Those piercing eyes that seemed to read straight into your soul... The memory alone made Adrelo grimace.
âHonestly,â he muttered humorously, stuffing his hands into his pockets,
âwhy couldnât the third prince go to this northern academy visit, too? If all three of them were gone, Iâd finally have some peace of mind.â
The thought of Dennielle returning his gaze, even for a moment, made him shiver again. No, thank you.
Adrelo shook his head, trying to push those unsettling thoughts aside. Instead, he focused on reaching his destinationâor maybe just wandering aimlessly until he could distract himself with something less nerve-wracking than thoughts of royal brothers.
