CELINE’S POV

“Seb!” A sound suddenly emerged out of nowhere, which served to break the eerie silence that had been prevailing. Sebatian’s sister Cynthia walked over to us with a grin on her face and looked up at her brother. “I was looking for you upstairs…” she said with a smile. “I thought you were still dressing up. Dad is also looking for you…”

“Where’s dad?” Sebastian asked, and he didn’t remain for much longer. But just before he left, he glanced thoughtfully at me in a way that sent shivers down my spine.

“Cynthia!” Brylee made a move toward her in an attempt to give her a hug, but she pulled back and examined her thoroughly from head to

toe.

“Mom is looking for you, too…” she said, rolling her eyes at my sister.

“Oh, okay…” Brylee put on a happy face and pretended as though she hadn’t noticed how Cynthia was behaving towards her.

“Two-faced hypocrite!” the young woman stuck out her tongue at Brylee after the latter turned around and left us without even saying goodbye. “Jake!” her frowning face suddenly lit up when she moved to hug Jake, who was stunned beside me.

“Hey there, sweetcakes…” Jake whispered into her ear, and hugged her back. “You’re still as clingy as you were back then, huh?”

“I miss you, Jake…” she said, pouting. “You didn’t even bother to call me or visit me when you arrived home…”

“My girlfriend…” he repeated, while chuckling. “Celine… this is Cynthia, Sebastian’s sister…”

“Hi…” I pretended that this was the first time I’d ever seen her and offered my hand for a handshake… but to my astonishment, she paid no attention to me and instead turned to face Jake.

“I can’t believe I forgot, I still have something to do…” She gave him a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Let’s catch up in a while…” she said. before disappearing from our sight.

“You’re using me as a deterrent to the girl, aren’t you? Do you really think it’s okay for me?” I asked Jake after Cynthia walked away from

us.

Jake froze, smiling helplessly.

“What did you say?” he asked. “When did I use you as a deterrent?”

I gave a shrug of the shoulders as I made my way over to the long

table.

“Celine, please forgive me… I…”

“Don’t worry about it…” I waved my hand at him. “I’m glad I would be

able to help you this time. After all, you helped me before…” I smiled as I picked up a strawberry and shoved it inside my mouth. “But… would she need to see a therapist?”

The appearance of Cynthia’s eyes was peculiar. I could see a mixture of shyness, joy, and hospitality in them all at the same time. But upon hearing that I am Jake’s girlfriend, the expression in her eyes changed to one of vigilance, pain, shock, and anger.

I had witnessed these things replicated in Brylee’s eyes.

Is Cynthia in love with Jake?

“This love doesn’t make sense…” Jake heaved a frustrated sigh. “Jake…” someone called him again, and when we both turned our heads to see who was calling, I saw an elegant and stunning middle- aged woman with a beautiful smile on her face. She was dressed in a long white dress that had off-the-shoulder sleeves.

She gave off the appearance of being Jake’s mother, and it confirmed my suspicions when I heard him refer to her as “mom…”

I heaved a sigh as I made the decision to go outside. The backyard of the house owned by the Anderson family is enormous and featured a rockery, a bamboo forest, a beautiful pavilion, and a fountain in the center of the garden.
