Chapter 25
Beneath the Ice
The next few days at the office were back to their usual hectic pace, but Lisa had her humor cranked up, and it seemed to be working its magic. She was keeping everyone in good spirits, even with the expansion moving at breakneck speed. However, amidst the jokes and banter, there was an undercurrent of something elseâa tension that Lisa couldnât help but notice, especially when Chaeyoung and Jennieâs sister, Jisoo, were in the same room.
It wasnât obvious at first, but after a few meetings, Lisa started picking up on it. The glances between Jisoo and Chaeyoung werenât just casual or professional. They were loaded with something else, something unspoken but palpable.
Lisa, ever the troublemaker, couldnât resist the temptation to dig a little deeper into what was going on. After all, stirring the pot was her specialty.
---
It all came to a head one afternoon during a team meeting. Chaeyoung and Jisoo were both in the room, and the tension between them was thicker than usual. Jisoo was her usual composed self, but Lisa noticed the way her eyes flicked toward Chaeyoung every so often, and Chaeyoung, who was usually chatty, had grown uncharacteristically quiet.
Lisa leaned over to Chaeyoung during a lull in the meeting and whispered, âYou okay? You look like youâre trying to send laser beams through Jisoo with your eyes.â
Chaeyoung blinked, startled, and shot Lisa a quick, flustered glance. âWhat? No, Iâm fine.â
Lisa smirked, not buying it for a second. âSure, because thatâs exactly how âfineâ people act.â
Chaeyoung huffed, her cheeks turning slightly pink as she glanced away. âIâm just... focusing.â
âFocusing on pretending not to be tense around Jisoo?â Lisa teased. âSeriously, whatâs going on between you two?â
Chaeyoung opened her mouth to respond, but before she could say anything, Jisoo, who had been sitting across the room, spoke up.
âIs there something youâd like to share with the team, Ms. Manoban?â
Lisa grinned, caught but unbothered. âOh, nothing serious. Just trying to keep the energy light in here. You know how I amâalways the team morale booster.â
Jisoo raised an eyebrow, her gaze cool. âYes, Iâve noticed. Although Iâm not sure how whispering during a meeting fits into that.â
Lisa chuckled, leaning back in her chair. âItâs all part of the process. You should try it sometime, Jisoo. Itâs called âfun.â Youâd be great at it.â
Jisoo gave her a look that could melt ice, but there was a hint of amusement in her eyes. âIâll keep that in mind.â
Chaeyoung, meanwhile, was doing her best to blend into the background, clearly uncomfortable with the attention being drawn toward her and Jisoo. Lisa glanced over at her, noting how Chaeyoungâs eyes were firmly fixed on the table, and how she hadnât looked at Jisoo once since the exchange started.
Interesting.
The rest of the meeting continued without incident, though the tension between Chaeyoung and Jisoo was still there, simmering beneath the surface. Lisa was curiousâshe didnât know what had gone down between them, but she was determined to find out.
---
After the meeting ended, Lisa cornered Chaeyoung in the hallway. âAlright, spill. Whatâs going on with you and Jisoo? Did something happen?â
Chaeyoung groaned, clearly not wanting to talk about it. âItâs nothing. Just... complicated.â
Lisa raised an eyebrow, intrigued. âComplicated how? Did you two fight or something?â
Chaeyoung shook her head, looking exasperated. âNo, itâs just... Ugh, itâs stupid. Iâve had a crush on her for a while, okay? But itâs weird because sheâs Jennieâs sister, and Jisoo is, like, untouchable.â
Lisa let out a low whistle. âWow, okay. That explains a lot. But why are you acting so weird around her? I mean, have you tried, you know, talking to her like a normal person?â
Chaeyoung gave Lisa a look. âItâs not that easy, Lisa. Sheâs intimidating, and every time I try to say something, I just freeze.â
Lisa grinned. âWell, thatâs ironic. Youâre freezing around The Queen.â
Chaeyoung groaned. âThis is exactly why I didnât want to tell you.â
Lisa chuckled, wrapping an arm around Chaeyoungâs shoulders. âDonât worry, Iâll help. If anyone can solve it , itâs me. Just leave it to the master.â
Chaeyoung gave her a doubtful look. âPlease donât make things worse.â
Lisaâs grin widened. âWhen have I ever made things worse?â
---
Lisa, being Lisa, decided that the best way to tackle this situation was to dive headfirst into it. After all, she loved a challengeâand getting Jisoo and Chaeyoung to deal with their obvious tension was definitely a challenge.
The next day, Lisa found herself in the break room once again, this time with both Jisoo and Chaeyoung present. Jisoo was pouring herself a coffee, while Chaeyoung hovered awkwardly by the door, clearly trying to avoid direct eye contact.
Lisa, ever the instigator, decided it was time to shake things up.
âHey, Jisoo!â Lisa called out, walking over with her usual swagger. âIâve been meaning to ask you something.â
Jisoo glanced up, her expression unreadable. âYes?â
Lisa leaned against the counter, making sure Chaeyoung was within earshot. âIf someone wanted to impress you, whatâs the best way to do it? Asking for a friend, of course.â
Jisoo raised an eyebrow, her gaze flicking to Chaeyoung for the briefest of moments before settling back on Lisa. âI donât usually give out advice on that sort of thing.â
âCome on,â Lisa pressed, smirking. âHumor me. Whatâs the secret to breaking through the queen exterior?â
Jisooâs lips twitched into a faint smile, though she kept her composure. âThereâs no secret. If someone wants to impress me, theyâll have to figure it out for themselves.â
Chaeyoung, who had been pretending not to listen, suddenly looked like she wanted the floor to swallow her whole. Lisa, sensing that the tension was about to bubble over, decided to ease offâjust a little.
âFair enough,â Lisa said with a shrug, turning to Chaeyoung. âHey, Chaeyoung, want to join us for coffee? Jisoo was just about to tell us her favorite hobbies. I bet she likes knitting or, you know, extreme rock climbing.â
Jisoo gave Lisa a deadpan look, while Chaeyoung looked like she was about to combust from embarrassment. âLisa, pleaseââ
Lisa grinned, clearly enjoying herself. âWhat? Iâm just trying to help everyone get along.â
Jisoo, to Lisaâs surprise, actually smiledâa small, almost imperceptible curve of her lips. âI donât think Chaeyoung needs any help from you.â
Chaeyoungâs eyes widened, her cheeks flushing pink as she fumbled for something to say. âI-I donât? I mean... I guess?â
Jisooâs smile grew a little, and she raised her coffee cup to her lips. âIâm sure sheâll figure it out.â
Lisa blinked, momentarily thrown off. Was that... a flirtatious tone in Jisooâs voice? She glanced at Chaeyoung, who was frozen in place, clearly overwhelmed by whatever had just happened.
âWell,â Lisa said, clapping her hands together. âI think my work here is done. You two have fun with your... figuring things out.â
And with that, Lisa gave them both a wink and sauntered out of the break room, leaving Chaeyoung and Jisoo in awkward silence.
---
Later that day, Lisa found herself back in Jennieâs office, still buzzing from her successful meddling. Jennie, who was reviewing some documents, glanced up as Lisa walked in.
âYou look way too pleased with yourself,â Jennie remarked, raising an eyebrow.
Lisa grinned, plopping down into a chair. âOh, you know, just doing my part to bring people together.â
Jennie eyed her suspiciously. âWhat did you do?â
Lisa leaned back, folding her hands behind her head. âJust gave Chaeyoung and your sister a little nudge in the right direction.â
Jennie sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. âPlease tell me you didnât make things worse.â
Lisa chuckled. âWorse? I think I may have just sparked the next great office romance.â
Jennie gave her a look, though there was a faint smile tugging at her lips. âYouâre unbelievable.â
Jennie rolled her eyes, but the warmth in her gaze was undeniable. âJust try not to cause any more chaos today.â
Lisa leaned forward, her voice teasing. âNo promises.â
Jennie smirked, walking around her desk to stand in front of Lisa. âIf you get into any more trouble, I might just have to deal with you personally.â
Lisaâs heart skipped a beat at Jennieâs words, and she shot Jennie a playful grin. âIs that a threat or a promise?â
Jennie leaned down, her lips brushing against Lisaâs ear as she whispered, âMaybe both.â
Lisaâs pulse quickened, and before she could respond, Jennie pressed a quick, heated kiss to her lipsâjust enough to leave her wanting more.
As Jennie pulled back, Lisa grinned, her voice breathless. âYou know, youâre making it really hard for me to focus on work.â
Jennie smirked. âGood.â
Lisa laughed, standing up and giving Jennie one last teasing wink before heading for the door. âIâll see you later, Ms. Kim.â
Jennie shook her head, watching as Lisa walked away, a smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
....
It had been a week since Lisa had meddled in the Chaeyoung-and-Jisoo situation, and while neither had made any obvious moves, the tension between them was still thick enough to cut with a knife. Lisa, naturally, couldnât resist poking at it every chance she got, but in her usual charming, teasing way.
As Lisa entered the office that morning, she felt an extra pep in her step. She had spent most of the previous evening plotting new ways to break the tension, all while keeping Jennie on her toes, of course. The best part of her day? Managing to lighten the mood in the office while still getting under Jennieâs skin just enough to see that spark of possessiveness.
Today was going to be fun.
---
First on Lisaâs list: Chaeyoung. She found her in the break room, stirring her coffee and looking lost in thought. Lisa sidled up next to her, her mischievous grin already in place.
âGood morning, Romeo,â Lisa greeted with a wink.
Chaeyoung groaned, immediately knowing where this conversation was going. âDonât start.â
Lisa feigned innocence, holding up her hands. âWhat? Iâm just saying, youâre giving off serious âpining protagonist in a rom-comâ vibes today.â
Chaeyoung sighed, stirring her coffee with more force than necessary. âI am not.â
âOh, you definitely are,â Lisa replied, leaning against the counter and taking a sip of her own coffee. âYouâve got the brooding look down and everything. Now, all you need is a dramatic confession of love.â
Chaeyoung shot her a look. âLisa, stop.â
But Lisa wasnât one to back down, especially when she knew she was getting under her friendâs skin in a harmless way. âIâm just saying, maybe you should take Jisoo out for a coffee or something. I hear sheâs into long walks in the corporate hallways.â
Chaeyoungâs cheeks flushed pink as she buried her face in her cup. âYouâre impossible.â
Chaeyoung sighed, clearly exasperated but too embarrassed to argue. âOkay, fine. Maybe I do... like her. But itâs complicated. Sheâs Jennieâs sister.â
Lisa shrugged. âSo what? Jennieâs not going to care if you like Jisoo. Besides, itâs not like youâre planning to elope.â
Chaeyoung blinked, looking more stressed by the second. âEloping? Who said anything about eloping?â
Lisa chuckled, loving how easy it was to get a rise out of her. âIâm just saying, maybe youâre overthinking it. I mean, sure, Jisooâs a little... intense, but thatâs part of her charm, right?â
Chaeyoung looked at Lisa like she was crazy. âIntense? Sheâs terrifying.â
Lisa grinned. âYeah, but you like it.â
Chaeyoungâs blush deepened, and she quickly changed the subject, mumbling something about needing to get back to work before Lisa could tease her any further.
---
âMs. Kim,â Lisa greeted in an exaggeratedly formal tone. âYou look like someone who needs a good laugh.â
Jennie looked up from her papers, her lips twitching into a small smile. âAnd you look like someone whoâs about to start trouble.â
Lisa grinned, plopping down into the chair across from Jennie. âTrouble? Me? Never.â
Jennie raised an eyebrow, clearly not buying it. âWhat did you do?â
Lisa leaned back, folding her arms behind her head. âOh, nothing. Just gave Chaeyoung some solid advice on how to woo your sister. No big deal.â
Jennie sighed, setting her papers aside. âLisa, please tell me you didnât make things complicated.â
âcomplicated?â Lisa gasped dramatically. âIâm making things better! Iâm the Cupid of this office.â
Jennie shot her a skeptical look. âSomehow, I donât trust your matchmaking skills.â
Lisa grinned, leaning forward. âOh, come on. You canât tell me you donât think Chaeyoung and Jisoo would be cute together.â
Jennie sighed again, but her lips twitched into a reluctant smile. âMaybe. But if this backfires, Iâm blaming you.â
Lisa laughed. âHey, if it backfires, Iâll handle it. But donât worryâIâve got everything under control.â
Jennie gave her a look, half amused, half exasperated. âYou always say that.â
Lisa winked. âThatâs because itâs always true.â
Jennie rolled her eyes, but the fondness in her gaze was unmistakable. âJust try not to cause too much chaos.â
Lisa stood up, her grin widening. âChaos? Thatâs my specialty.â
---
Later that afternoon, Lisa found herself back in the break room, this time with Jisoo, who was sipping her coffee in that composed, queen way of hers. Lisa, ever the opportunist, saw this as the perfect time to test the waters.
âJisoo,â Lisa greeted, walking over with her usual swagger. âYouâre looking very... chill today.â
Jisoo glanced at her, her expression unreadable. âIâm always chill.â
Lisa chuckled, leaning against the counter. âTrue. So, have you noticed Chaeyoung acting weird around you lately?â
Jisooâs eyes narrowed ever so slightly. âWhat are you talking about?â
âOh, nothing,â Lisa said casually, taking a sip of her coffee. âJust that every time youâre in the same room, she turns into a deer caught in headlights. Itâs pretty adorable, actually.â
Jisoo raised an eyebrow, her lips curving into a small, amused smile. âIs that so?â
Lisa nodded, her grin widening. âDefinitely. In fact, I think she might have a little crush on you.â
Jisoo tilted her head, her gaze flicking to the doorway where Chaeyoung had just walked in, looking like she wanted to bolt right back out. Jisooâs smile grew a little wider.
âWell,â Jisoo said, her tone calm but teasing, âthatâs interesting.â
Chaeyoung, clearly flustered, quickly made her way to the coffee machine, avoiding eye contact with both Lisa and Jisoo. Lisa, sensing the golden opportunity, decided to step back and let things unfold.
âOh, look who it is,â Lisa said, grinning as Chaeyoung fumbled with her coffee cup. âSpeak of the devil.â
Chaeyoung shot Lisa a desperate look, her face turning an impressive shade of red. âI-I was just getting coffee.â
âSure you were,â Lisa teased, giving Jisoo a playful wink. âTotally unrelated to the fact that Jisooâs here, right?â
Jisoo smirked, her eyes still on Chaeyoung, who looked like she wanted the floor to swallow her whole.
âLisa,â Chaeyoung hissed, her voice barely a whisper. âPlease stop.â
Lisa chuckled, clearly enjoying herself. âAlright, alright. Iâll leave you two to... whatever this is.â
As Lisa sauntered out of the break room, she couldnât help but feel a sense of victory. The tension between Jisoo and Chaeyoung was practically crackling now, and Lisa had no doubt that something was going to happen soon.
---
By the time Lisa made her way back to Jennieâs office later that day, she was practically buzzing with excitement. Jennie, who was once again buried in paperwork, looked up as Lisa entered the room.
âLet me guess,â Jennie said, her tone dry. âYouâve caused more chaos.â
Lisa grinned, sitting down across from Jennie. âNot chaosâprogress. I just had the most interesting conversation with Jisoo and Chaeyoung.â
Jennie raised an eyebrow. âWhat did you do?â
Lisa leaned back, crossing her arms behind her head. âNothing, really. Just pointed out that Chaeyoungâs been acting a little weird around Jisoo. And, you know, mentioned the crush.â
Jennie sighed, but there was a hint of amusement in her eyes. âYouâre really determined to push them together, arenât you?â
Lisa shrugged. âWhat can I say? I love a good office romance.â
Jennie gave her a look. âJust donât make things too awkward.â
âOh, come on,â Lisa said, grinning. âItâs all in good fun. Besides, you know youâre secretly rooting for them too.â
Jennieâs lips twitched into a reluctant smile. âMaybe. But if it goes wrong, youâre cleaning up the mess.â
Lisa winked. âDeal. But trust me, itâs not going to go wrong.â
Jennie shook her head, clearly amused by Lisaâs confidence. âYouâre incorrigible.â
âAnd you love it,â Lisa replied, standing up and giving Jennie a playful salute before heading for the door.
Just as she reached the door, Jennie called out, her voice soft but teasing. âLisa.â
Lisa turned, raising an eyebrow. âYeah?â
Jennieâs smile widened just a little. âTry not to cause too much trouble tomorrow.â
Lisa grinned, her heart fluttering at Jennieâs words. âNo promises, Ms. Kim.â
And with that, Lisa walked out of the of, her mind already spinning with new ways to keep things interesting.
....
Lisa was on a roll. The tension between Jisoo and Chaeyoung had finally started to simmer, Jennie had almost admitted that she found Lisa's antics entertaining, and the office had become her personal playground. As far as Lisa was concerned, things were going great.
Today, though, she had a new mission: keep the office fun, but up the ante a little. It was time to stir the pot just a bit moreâbecause, well, why not?
---
As Lisa made her way into the office, her usual swagger in full force, she immediately spotted Chaeyoung by the copier. Perfect. She sauntered over, her mischievous grin already in place.
âHey, Chaeyoung,â Lisa greeted in a sing-song voice.
Chaeyoung looked up from the copier, eyes narrowing in suspicion. âWhat now, Lisa?â
Lisa gasped dramatically, placing a hand over her heart. âWhat? Why do you always assume Iâm up to something?â
Chaeyoung rolled her eyes. âBecause youâre always up to something.â
Lisa grinned. âFair point. But today, I come bearing advice.â
Chaeyoung sighed, already dreading whatever was coming next. âWhat kind of advice?â
Lisa leaned in closer, lowering her voice conspiratorially. âYou should ask Jisoo out. Like, officially. None of this shy, quiet,âIâm-just-hanging-around-you-for-coffeeâ stuff.â
Chaeyoungâs face turned bright red. âW-What?! I canât justâask her out! What if she says no?â
Lisa shrugged casually. âThen you move on. But something tells me sheâs not gonna say no.â
Chaeyoung groaned, burying her face in her hands. âYouâre impossible.â
âAnd yet,â Lisa teased, âyou still listen to me.â
Before Chaeyoung could respond, the sound of footsteps caught their attention. Lisa glanced up and saw Jisoo walking down the hall, looking as composed as ever. Lisa shot Chaeyoung a mischievous grin.
âSpeak of the devil,â Lisa whispered.
Chaeyoung visibly tensed as Jisoo approached, and Lisa could practically feel the panic radiating off her. Jisoo, on the other hand, looked completely unbothered.
âGood morning,â Jisoo greeted, her tone cool but polite.
Chaeyoung mumbled something incoherent in response, her face still flushed, while Lisa leaned casually against the copier, grinning like a Cheshire cat.
âMorning, Jisoo,â Lisa replied smoothly, giving Chaeyoung a not-so-subtle nudge with her elbow. âChaeyoung was just telling me how she wanted to ask youââ
Chaeyoung elbowed Lisa in the ribs, cutting her off mid-sentence. âLisa!â
Jisoo raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. âAsk me what?â
Lisa, rubbing her ribs but still grinning, waved off Chaeyoungâs protest. âOh, nothing serious. Just something about getting coffee together sometime. You know, the usual.â
Chaeyoungâs face was now so red it could rival a tomato. Jisoo, however, seemed unfazed. In fact, there was a small, amused smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
âI see,â Jisoo said, her tone cool but teasing. âWell, Iâm sure we can arrange that.â
Chaeyoung blinked, clearly shocked. âWait, really?â
Jisooâs smile grew just a little, and she gave a small nod. âYes. Really.â
Lisa could barely contain her laughter at the way Chaeyoungâs eyes widened in disbelief. Mission accomplished.
âSee?â Lisa said, giving Chaeyoung a playful pat on the back. âI told you it wouldnât be that hard.â
Chaeyoung, still flustered, shot Lisa a death glare, though there was a hint of gratitude in her eyes. âIâm going to kill you later.â
Lisa chuckled. âSure, sure. But right now, youâve got a coffee date to plan.â
Jisoo, looking entirely too pleased with herself, gave Chaeyoung a small nod before walking away, leaving Chaeyoung standing there, stunned.
âDid that just happen?â Chaeyoung asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Lisa grinned, giving her a light nudge. âYep. And now you have no excuse to keep acting weird around her.â
Chaeyoung groaned, running a hand through her hair. âI canât believe this is happening.â
Lisa patted her on the shoulder. âYouâll be fine. Just... donât embarrass yourself too much.â
Chaeyoung shot Lisa another glare, though there was a small smile on her lips. âYouâre lucky Iâm too relieved to be mad at you right now.â
Lisa laughed, flashing her a playful wink. âGlad I could help.â
---
Feeling victorious from her matchmaking success, Lisa made her way to Jennieâs office for their usual afternoon meeting. She knocked lightly before stepping inside, immediately greeted by Jennieâs usual calm, focused demeanor.
âMs. Kim,â Lisa greeted, her tone playful. âReady for our daily dose of chaos?â
Jennie looked up from her paperwork, her lips curving into a small smile. âI take it youâve been stirring the pot again?â
Lisa grinned, plopping down in the chair across from Jennie. âYou know it. And guess what? I think I just set up a coffee date between Chaeyoung and your sister.â
Jennie raised an eyebrow, looking both amused and slightly exasperated. âOf course, you did.â
Lisa leaned back, crossing her arms behind her head. âHey, someoneâs got to get things moving around here. Besides, I think itâs going to work out.â
Jennie sighed, shaking her head. âYouâre lucky they havenât both strangled you by now.â
Lisa grinned, leaning forward. âCome on, admit itâyouâre impressed.â
Jennieâs lips twitched into a reluctant smile. âMaybe a little.â
Lisa laughed, clearly enjoying herself. âI knew it! Youâre secretly rooting for them too.â
Jennie didnât respond right away, but her eyes softened, and Lisa could see that familiar spark of amusement in her gaze.
âAlright,â Jennie said, her tone a mix of fondness and warning. âBut no more meddling. Let them figure things out on their own from here.â
Lisa smirked, leaning closer. âWhereâs the fun in that?â
Jennie gave her a look, though there was a faint smile tugging at the corner of her lips. âLisa.â
âFine, fine,â Lisa relented, holding up her hands in surrender. âIâll back off. But youâve got to admit, Iâve done a pretty good job so far.â
Jennieâs gaze softened further, and she stood up, walking around her desk to stand in front of Lisa. âYou always do.â
Lisaâs heart skipped a beat at Jennieâs words, and before she could respond, Jennie leaned down, her lips brushing against Lisaâs in a soft, lingering kiss. It was gentle, slowâcompletely different from their usual heated exchanges, but it left Lisa breathless all the same.
When Jennie pulled back, her eyes were warm, her usual composed exterior slipping just enough to show the tenderness beneath.
âYouâre trouble,â Jennie whispered, her voice soft but teasing.
Lisa, still grinning like an idiot, leaned in to steal another quick kiss.
Jennie rolled her eyes, but the smile on her face told Lisa everything she needed to know.
---
The rest of the day passed in a blur of meetings and project updates, but Lisa couldnât shake the good mood that had settled over her. Things were falling into placeâChaeyoung and Jisoo were finally moving past their awkwardness, and Jennie was still the perfect mix of exasperated and fond when it came to Lisaâs antics.
Later that evening, as Lisa was heading out of the office, she bumped into Jisoo near the elevators. Jisoo, ever the picture of calm, gave her a knowing look.
âYouâre quite the matchmaker, arenât you?â Jisoo said, her tone light but teasing.
Lisa grinned. âJust doing my part.â
Jisooâs lips curved into a small smile. âWell, I suppose I should thank you.â
Lisa blinked, caught off guard. âWait, really? Youâre not mad?â
Jisoo chuckled softly. âNo. In fact, I think things might be... interesting.â
Lisa smirked. âI knew it. Youâve been into Chaeyoung this whole time.â
Jisoo didnât respond directly, but the glint in her eyes told Lisa everything she needed to know.
âWell,â Lisa said, giving Jisoo a playful nudge, âgood luck with your coffee date.â
Jisoo smiled, a real smile this time. âThanks, Lisa.â
As Jisoo walked away, Lisa couldnât help but feel a sense of satisfaction. Everything was coming together nicely, and she had successfully orchestrated yet another office romanceâwithout causing too much chaos.
