SLOAN
My head is so twisted right now. ~Ugh~.
I get into my car and plug my phone in, then turn it back on, but as Iâm backing out of the parking spot, my phone is blowing up.
I park again to check it.
There are texts from Archie, but I donât care because, right now, all I see are five missed calls from Marlene. ~Shit~. I call her back as fast as I can.
âSloan! Where have you been?â she answers.
âIâm sorry, I got sucked into a project at the venue.â
âThe curtains.â
âYes. How do you know?â
âBecause Jess took a picture of Kade Lawson helping you and sent it to us. We posted it on Instagram, and itâs gone viral.â
âOh, God.â
âThis is a good thing.â
âI just donât know if Kade wanted that. He was just helping me as a friend.â
âHe just commented on it.â
âWhat? What did he say?â
~âSloan is incredibly talented and creative. Iâm glad she let me be part of her process,â~ Marlene reads.
âWow.â
âYeah, wow! Good job, Sloan, youâre slaying this.â
âThank you.â
âCan I meet you down there tomorrow to see your progress?â
âSure, what time?â
âIâll come after the morning meeting. Maybe 10 a.m.â
âOkay, Iâll be there.â
âSee you.â
After I hang up, I sit in shock for a minute and then decide to call Kade.
âHey, you,â he answers.
âIâm sorry, I had no idea, I didnât know,â I admit guiltily.
âI didnât know, either, but I donât care; itâs a cute picture.â
âWhat?â
âIâm guessing you havenât seen it yet?â
âNo, I just got off the phone with my boss,â I explain.
âWell, is she happy?â
âYes.â
âThen itâs all good news, right?â
âOkay, I just wanted to make sure you knew I didnât plan it.â
âI know, Sloan, I was with you the whole time. Itâs fine,â he assures me.
âThanks, Kade. I guess Iâll see you in a little bit.â
âYep, see you soon.â
After we hang up, I open Instagram and look for the picture and there it is, right at the top.
It is actually a really sweet picture. Iâm lying down, drawing, while Kade is looking at me with a smile on his face. Archie never looks at me like that.
~Shit, Archie.~
I pull up my text feed with him, and itâs just him telling me how dumb it was to get a tattoo and that we need to talk, so I decide to put that off for the night. Tonight, Iâm going to have fun.
I make the trip home and go upstairs to shower and get ready.
Soon, Iâm panicked because I donât know what to wear. I secretly want Kade to think I look good but I donât want to push it too far.
Finally, I decide a silver minidress is the right thing to wear to a private club show. Iâm a fashion consultant, after all. I know what Iâm talking about.
Just as I slip my shoes on, the doorbell rings, and I open it to see Kade looking super hot in tight jeans, a denim shirt, and a leather jacket, and I almost stumble.
âHey, Iâm almost ready,â I say, recovering myself.
âYou look incredible, Sloan.â
âThank you, you look great too. I just want to grab a sweater, just in case, Iâll be right back.â
I fold up a small cardigan in my bag and grab my lipstick. After checking myself in the mirror one more time, I go back to Kade.
âYour chariot awaits,â he says, grinning.
âOh, Iâm a princess now?â
âYep, come on, Your Highness.â
âKade, you always make me laugh.â
He chuckles. âTick.â
âOh, no, weâre ticking boxes again?â
âYou set yourself up for that one.â
Soon, weâre in Kadeâs car, heading downtown.
âWe donât go on for like an hour and a half, so we can hang out. Itâs only a half set, so I wonât be away from you for long,â he explains.
âItâs okay, Iâm excited to see you play. Iâve only ever heard the one song.â
âThen I expect to see you front and center.â
âI can do that.â
When we get to the club, itâs a little glitzy compared to where I usually go, but Iâm excited. Itâs like an old-fashioned piano bar, much more low-key, and the music is modern but kind of jazzy.
Kade finds a table in the corner and pulls out a chair for me. âI donât see anyone from the band, yet, but theyâre probably going to be annoying when they get here, so Iâm sorry ahead of time.â
âArenât they your friends?â
âYeah, but until you got to know me, you thought I was insufferable. Imagine what theyâre like.â
I burst into laughter again.
âStop! Donât snort! I canât handle it,â he says, putting his hands up, so I swat his arm. âSo, how are things on the Archie front?â
âHe is super pissed at me, which I think is funny at this point because heâs the one who did something wrong. All I did was get a tattoo on my own body.â
âDid you talk to him?â
âNo. He keeps saying we need to talk but he hasnât called or anything, and Iâm not going to go crawling after him.â
âThat sucks, Sloan, Iâm sorry,â he says and looks genuinely sad.
âItâs fine, Iâm here with you now; weâre having fun, right?â
âI am but I just want to make sure youâre okay.â
âThe thing is, itâs not even weird that weâre not talking. Itâs Tuesday; we never talk on Tuesdays. Iâm not going to let it bother me.
âAs far as Iâm concerned, he can stay in the doghouse until I pull this party off and blow up at work.â
âThatâs right! Good girl. Iâm so proud of you.â He smiles and it lights up his face.
âThanks for getting me here, Kade, for making me realize how screwed up this is, and for helping me with the party. This week would have been a lot more difficult without you.â
He laughs. âItâs been two days.â
âBut doesnât it feel like twenty?â
âI guess, I could see how it might.â
âYeah, I mean, Iâve processed so much crap because of you; you helped dig me out of a hole.â
âI just donât like seeing good people get taken advantage of,â he explains.
âWell, I think youâre a good person. Youâre incredible.â
He chuckles. âWow, Sloan, youâre going to make me cry.â
âHey, Iâm trying to be nice here.â
âI know, I appreciate it. If you must know, I was just masking my real emotions. You made my heart swell, and now I feel all ooey-gooey.â
âAw, Kade has soft insides?â
âYou bet.â
âKade!â someone yells from behind me.
âOoh, incoming, fasten your seatbelt.â Kade grins. âSean, whatâs up?â
âNot much. Is anyone else here yet?â
âI havenât seen anyone.â
âAnd who is this?â
âSean, this is my friend, Sloan. She came to watch the show tonight,â Kade explains.
I extend my hand, and Sean gives me a gentle shake and smiles strangely at me.
âUgh, donât be a weirdo. Weâre adults. Watch.â Kade turns to me. âSloan, I like you, I think youâre beautiful.â
I smile at Kade because I see what heâs doing.
âItâs not a secret. See? No more awkwardness.â Kade laughs and moves his hands through the air like heâs clearing it.
Sean laughs. âIâm not sure who I should feel worse for: you because sheâs not available; or her because youâre following her around.â
Kade flips him off, and another guy comes over to the table. Once Iâve been introduced to everyone, I excuse myself to the restroom to catch my breath.
Iâm standing in front of the mirror, trying to rationalize what is happening right now, when a girl slides up next to me. She is curvy, and her dress isnât doing much to hide her huge breasts.
âOh, my God, are you here with Kade Lawson?â she gasps.
âUhh, yeah.â
âHeâs gorgeous.â
âCanât argue with you there, but weâre just friends. I have a boyfriend,â I explain.
âOh, me too. Iâm just saying, youâre lucky; he looks taken with you. I wouldnât pass that up.â
âUm, thanks. I better get back out there.â
~That was weird.~
When I start to walk toward the table, Kade meets my eyes and gives me that smile that melts my heart.
âEverything okay?â he asks when I sit down.
âYeah, there was just a weird girl in the bathroom.â
âI got you a refill.â
âI guess I wonât refuse since youâre driving,â I say, giggling. âThank you.â
Kade smirks. âWant to dance or something?â
I smile. âWhy not?â
