SLOAN
Iâm finishing up my makeup when I hear the doorbell for the first time. Luckily, Kade is downstairs so heâll answer the door.
I fluff my hair a little and check for my bump in the mirror, then make my way downstairs.
âSloan! Honey, come here.â My dad is standing with his arms outstretched, so I naturally walk into them.
âHoney, you look so pretty, I love this dress. What is going on tonight?â my mom adds while she hugs me.
I laugh. âJust wait until everyone gets here, Mom.â
The doorbell rings again, and when I answer it, I see Kadeâs mom and two sisters.
âOh, Sloan, you look so pretty!â Kadeâs sister, Priya, gasps.
âThank you, come in.â
Kade comes out from the kitchen and greets everyone, then I help him set the table. I just want to get on with dinner so we can tell everyone and stop being nervous.
Soon, Kade and I have set up a buffet on the counter, and everyone is sitting down to eat.
âWhatâs going on, guys?â Priya asks.
I giggle. âWow, no small talk with you all, huh?â
âYou called us here to talk about the wedding,â my mom insists.
âWe fibbed,â Kade admits.
âKade!â his mom, Carol, gasps.
He chuckles. âJust calm down.â
Kade looks at me with wide eyes, and I guess now is as good a time as any, so I stand up and hold his hand.
âOkay, everyone, we called you here to tell you that weâre expecting,â Kade announces proudly.
Everyone gasps or reacts loudly.
âThereâs moreâ¦,â I admit. âIâm actually pretty far along; weâre due in four months.â
Everyone gets louder and rowdier; I can see Kadeâs sister studying my waist.
Kade laughs. âHey! Wait! Everyone, quiet!â
Everyone stops and stares at him; he squeezes my hand and looks into my eyes before he turns and says, âItâs a little girl.â
âHer name is Clover Mae,â I add.
By now, both moms are crying, my dad looks dumbfounded, and Kadeâs sisters are squealing and talking about being hot aunts. Finally, everyone takes a breath.
âWhen did you find out?â Carol asks.
âI knew two days before he proposed but I didnât tell him until after; turns out we both had surprises for each other that night,â I explain.
âBut youâre that far along?â my mom says, her mouth agape.
After we answer a million questions, we finally get to eat, and then everyone gathers in the living room. I pull out the sonogram and pass it around, and everyone âohsâ and âawsâ.
âI canât figure this out, Sloan; youâre so tiny,â Priya says.
âAll I can tell you is to do Pilates,â I admit.
âEverything is okay though?â Kadeâs other sister, Rhea, asks.
âYes, they said weâre good. Iâm having a full anatomy scan next week, but they donât anticipate any issues.â
âWhen do you want to get married?â my mom asks.
âWe think a month or two after Clover comes. By the time we could plan anything now, Iâd be majorly showing and thatâs not what I want.â
âI understand that, but right now, you are tiny. We could pull it off,â my mom says, persisting.
âGet married when? Like next week?â Kade laughs.
âWhy not? Do you want a huge ceremony?â my dad asks.
âNo, I donât think so,â I say, and Kade nods in agreement.
Kadeâs mom smiles. âYes, get married next weekend then.â
âSloan is sample size and she can get whatever dress she wants,â Rhea squeaks.
âWait, really? I mean this is what I wanted but I didnât know we could pull it off,â I admit.
âWe can,â Kade smiles.
âAll of us will help,â my mom adds.
Kade grins. âWhat do you say, baby? Marry me next weekend?â
âOf course, Kade. Can we really do this?â
âLook what you two did with the LILAC party in one week,â my mom reminds me.
âTrue.â I smile. âOkay, letâs do this.â
Everyone smiles and is happily chatting for a while, then they start to break apart, and my mom begins to pepper me with questions.
âSloan, how do you feel about this, really?â
âHappy. I was worried about not being married before Clover came. I just want us all to be a family in name.â
âWeâre going to pull this off. You have to give me Marleneâs number; we got along at your engagement party, but I didnât get her info.â
After I answer all of my momâs questions, we have a fun night, eating and hanging out with our family, but eventually, everyone leaves, and Iâm left alone with Kade.
I sit on the couch with Kadeâs head in my lap, his ear pressed to my belly.
I giggle. âIs she talking to you?â
âNot yet. Iâm just waiting for her to move or something.â
âI felt a weird flutter earlier, but I figured it was nothing.â
âNo, baby, flutters mean sheâs starting to move. I read about it.â
âAw, youâre already such a cute daddy.â
âAnd you are a beautiful mommy. I canât believe I get to marry you next weekend.â
âIâm excited too. I guess we know our families will make it, but who else should we invite?â
âI donât know. The band and Marlene and whoever else from LILAC.â
âEven though we donât have concrete plans, we should probably invite people tomorrow. A week is already a really short time to expect them to save the date.â
He chuckles. âWhatever you say, baby, youâre the fancy event planner now.â
âI guess so.â
The night winds down while we cuddle and chat on the couch. Itâs so nice that we live together now, and it makes me wonder why we didnât do it sooner.
Later, as I fall asleep in his arms, I feel so content and happy. Everything is finally coming together.
