SLOAN
Once we get into the main hallway, he sets me on my feet and smiles. âWill you come with me?â
âYes, but Iâll walk if thatâs okay with you.â
He smirks. âSassy, sassy, I like it.â
âYou havenât seen anything yet.â
âWell, come on.â He grins before heading out the door.
I follow him and try to keep his stride, but heâs much taller than me, and Iâm having a hard time keeping up. âHey, whereâs the fire?â
He chuckles. âSorry, short stuff, Iâll slow down.â
I just glare at him. âAre you just gonna pick on me the whole time?â
âNo, actually, Iâm going to flirt with you some more,â he says with a flirty smile.
âYou shouldnât.â
âWhy? Do you bite?â he says and he almost looks hopeful.
âI have a boyfriend,â I admit.
âSo?â he says matter-of-factly.
âSo?â
He smiles confidently. âJust a speed bump on my way to what I want.â
âAnd what do you want?â
~âYou.â~
âHow can you be so sure?â
âIâm pretty particular. I know what I like.â
I giggle. âWeâll see if that works out for you.â
He looks right into my eyes. âIt will.â
His confidence is off the charts, but itâs not like he has a big head. There is something about him thatâs magnetic and he just shuts me right up.
We get to the coffee shop and sit down, and a waitress comes over to take our order.
Kade smiles. âSo, tell me about him.â
âWho?â
âThis boyfriend?â
âArchie? Well, weâveââ
He laughs. âWait, Archie?â
âYes, itâs a family name. Better than Archibald.â
âOh, heâs one of those?â he says, nodding his head like he already knows everything.
âOne of what?â
He chuckles. âHe sounds like a fancy rich boy.â
âHe is,â I admit.
âThatâs not a good thing.â
âHow do you know?â I ask, genuinely curious about what he is going to say.
âIt never is. I doubt he pays attention to you.â
~âHe does,â~ I rebut without even thinking.
âReally?â He raises an eyebrow.
âHeâs busy.â
Kade smiles. âHere come the excuses.â
âThey are just facts.â
He smiles. âSloan, you are beautiful.â
I feel heat rising to my cheeks and a flutter in my chest.
âSee my point? When was the last time he said that to you?â
âUmâ¦â
âYou donât have to answer. Just think about it.â
âKade, youâre infuriating.â
âSaucy.â
âItâs the truth.â
The waitress brings our coffees, but that doesnât mean that Kade is going to let me off easy.
âHow long have you been dating Archie?â
âFive years.â
âFive years?â he asks and he looks shocked.
âYes.â
His face looks almost pained. âSloanâ¦â
âWhat?â
âIsnât it kind of one of those piss-or-get-off-the-pot situations at this point?â
âWhat are you on about?â
âI know girls like you. Why arenât you engaged? Or maybe Iâm wrong, and youâre just not the marrying kind?â
âI, umâ¦â
âI see,â he says, smiling triumphantly.
âWhat are you, the love doctor?â I push back.
âYes, baby. Call me Doctor Love.â
âAre you always this insufferable?â
âI will grow on you.â
âWeâll see about that.â ~All right, Kade, time to flip this back on you.~ âAnd what about you, why donât you have a girlfriend?â
âI was waiting for you to show up.â
âI donât buy it.â
âWhy not?â he asks and looks genuinely shocked.
âYou must meet tons of women being in a band.â
âI do.â
âOh, so youâre just not into the whole girlfriend thing?â I ask.
âI am but, as I said, I know what I like. I donât want to play games.â
He just shut me right up again. There has to be something wrong with this guy; no one looks like him, is successful, kind, and completely available and ready for love. It just doesnât happen.
He smiles. âShould I get you back? Donât want to miss lunch with Archie-kins.â
âI wonât.â
âHow can you be sure? Maybe heâll surprise you.â
âHe doesnât even know where I am,â I admit.
âHow is that possible?â
âWe donât talk about work much.â
âWell, it sounds like your job is important. Talk to me about it,â he says.
âReally?â
âWhy not?â
âArchie says itâs bland and uninteresting girly things,â I explain.
âSloan, thatâs horrible,â he says, looking genuinely upset.
âUm, well, I donât like it, but heâs under a lot of stress.â
âSo? Arenât you?â
âYes, actually. I just got this promotion, and now this party is on my shoulders and itâs more than I can handle, but I really need to succeed, because it would put me in my bossâs good gracesâ¦
âWhoa, sorry,â I say, blushing once I realize Iâm rambling.
âSee, you need to talk,â he insists.
âWell, Iâve been working toward this promotion for two years and Iâve only had it a week, but my boss put me in charge of styling the party.â
He smiles. âHence, the purple cloud.â
âDonât remind me. I have to work with the leftovers that the event planners purchased; thereâs no more money. I never would have chosen the purple cloud, but I have to make the best of it,â I explain.
âWhat is the goal here?â
I laugh. âTo pull off an Internet-breaking event that makes my boss happy.â
âHow can you do that?â
âI have to make the event look gram-able, and like LILAC, it has to attract influencers and other people to our website. She wants to create a buzz around us.â
Kade smiles. âMaybe I can help.â
âWhy would you do that?â
He playfully bats his eyelashes. âBecause Iâm a sweetheart.â
I laugh. âI wouldnât go that far.â
âYouâll see, Iâll win you over. Give me a week.â
I roll my eyes and shake my head involuntarily.
âCome on, I donât want to keep you from your work any longer.â
He pays for the coffee and walks me back to the venue.
âThanks, Kade, I actually had fun.â
âMe, too, but Iâm leaving now, so no more falling over,â he says with a laugh.
âYouâre leaving?â
âWhy? Will you miss me?â
I laugh and turn to leave. âNot anymore.â
âWait, give me your number.â
âWhy?â
âWeâre friends now, right? If you need to talk about your job or anything, you can talk to me.â He smiles, and I know Iâm not going to be able to say no to him. Heâs dangerous.
He passes his phone to me, and I put my number in it. âMm-hm, give me one week.â He smirks and turns to leave.
~Oh, my God! What an insufferable, incredibly kind, sweet, perceptive, sexy man.~
~Oh no, Sloan, youâre in trouble.~
I go back into the venue and start to tie more flowers. After I finish making them all, I think itâs better if I leave the hanging for someone else to do.
Before I head back to the office, I take a few teaser pictures for LILACâs Instagram.
During the drive back, I try to focus on the event, even though my mind keeps slipping to a certain sexy singer who saved me from broken bones today.
When I walk into the main hallway, Marlene is standing there with her mouth agape. âThere she is! What did you do?â
âUh, I made flowers. Why, what did I do?â
She grins widely. âOur Instagram is blowing up.â
âWhy?â
âThatâs what Iâd like to know. Kade Lawson is raving about how youâre going to put on the event of the season.â
âUh, what?â
âHere, look,â she says and she hands me her phone.
Itâs a tagged photo of the venue, tinted LILACâs shade of purple, posted on Kadeâs personal Instagram.
The caption reads: ~Donât miss LILACâs 10th-anniversary party, our last local gig. But~ ~not only that, Sloan Kennedy is styling the event of the season. If youâre not on the guest list, you want to be.~
âHoly shit,â I whisper.
âMy thoughts exactly.â
âSorry, I didnât mean to say that out loud.â
âHow did you pull this off?â
âI had coffee with him,â I say sweetly.
Marlene smiles. â~That!~ Keep doing that. Iâm very proud, Sloan. Good job!â
âThank you. I, um, made some lilacs and took some pictures. Do you want to post them to Instagram? It might be good to capitalize on this momentum,â I say as I hand her my phone.
âYes, send these to Carly Anderson. Great job, Sloan. Really great job.â Marlene walks away smiling.
I go into my office to sit down and think about things for a little bit. When I check my phone, I have a text from Archie. ~What? Thatâs weird.~
Archie
Honey, can you move the LILAC party?
~What the hell? Can I move the LILAC party? Who is he kidding?~
Sloan
Archie? No, I canât.
Archie
I canât go then.
Sloan
Why? You said youâd be there. Itâs really important.
Archie
There is a Smith & Co. dinner with investors. I canât miss it.
Sloan
Archie, this really sucks.
Archie
Donât talk like that, itâs not ladylike. Iâm sorry. Youâll have to go to the party on your own.
Iâm too angry to reply. I pack up my stuff and make my way to my car, then attempt to tune out the world and my emotions by listening to music until I get home.
