SLOAN
Clearly, Kade just doesnât understand the benefit of a good plan. Having all of my ducks in a row is what I strive for; how am I supposed to accomplish that without a plan?
âI donât have to be happy right now. It will work out in the end,â I explain.
âHow do you know?â
âThe plan, itâs all coming together.â
âTell me about this ~plan~.â
âGraduate with honors, go to college, graduate, get a dream job, meet a dream man, get married.â
âSo, what stage are you at now?â Kade asks, and Iâm a little hesitant to answer because there is mischief in his tone.
âI got my promotion and I love working for LILAC; so, I guess, my dream job.â
âTell me about the dream man, and I donât mean Archie. I mean what you thought of when you made this plan.â
âHandsome, smart, successfulââ
He smirks. âTick, tick, tick.â
âWho are you ticking?â
âYouâll see, keep going.â
âKind, endearing, funny, andââ
âTick, tick, tick,â he says, smiling like heâs won the lottery.
âAbove all else, he loves me,â I finish.
âDoes Archie love you?â
âOf course, he does; weâve been together for five years.â
âSloan, that doesnât mean anything,â he says sadly.
I canât think of a damn thing to say and Iâm sure that my face looks like something really special right now.
Maybe heâs right; the way things are with Archie is not what Iâd planned for, but I just thought that maybe we were going through a rough patch.
âIâm not trying to hurt your feelings. I know you donât know me at all and, I guess, I donât really know you but I can see that youâre sad and I know you deserve more than what heâs giving you.â
âWhat about the ticks?â
He laughs. âNot trying to toot my own horn, but ~toot-toot~.â
âKade!â
âWhat? Iâm serious! How do you know itâs not me?â
âWhy? Do you love me, Kade?â I tease.
âI could. I havenât been able to stay away from you since the second I saw you, and itâs only been one day.â
~Whoa~. This might be getting too real. âKadeâ¦â
âCan you say the same thing about Archie?â
Iâm stunned into silence. Iâm so mad at Archie right now that Iâm not sure I can rely on my feelings. Kade is not going to let this go easily, and I have to admit that heâs kind of making good points.
âIâm going to have to answer that for you. No, you canât. Heâs lucky to have you but he ignores you and puts you aside,â Kade grumbles.
âIt wasnât always like this,â I explain.
âIt is now,â he insists.
âHeâs just busy,â I say.
Kade doesnât have to tell me how bad that sounds; Iâm already mad at myself because I canât believe the excuses I make for Archie.
âArenât you busy?â
âYes, working for LILAC is kind of a twenty-four-seven job. Iâm always researching and trying to find the next new thing. It consumes me.â
âBut if Archie was sad at home, by himself, you would drop everything and go there in a second,â he suggests.
âProbably.â
âWhy doesnât he do the same for you?â
âHis job is different. Heâs more involved, more important.â
âNo!â he says with barely contained frustration. Kade stands up and sits down next to me, taking my hand. âYou are important, you are beautiful, and you deserve to be adored, even if itâs not by me.
âIâm not going to sit by and watch you be taken advantage of. You need to toss this plan and do something for yourself.â
âLike, what?â
âWhatâs something youâve always wanted to do but didnât because you were afraid of what people would think?â
âUmâ¦â
He smiles. âFirst thing that comes to mind.â
âGet a tattoo,â I say timidly.
âGet dressed.â
âWhat?â I gasp.
âGet dressed. Weâre going to get a tattoo, right now, no thinking about it.â
âKade, I canât⦠What willâ?â
âDonât finish that sentence. I swear, if itâs what will Archie think, Iâm going to throw you over my shoulder and take you in your pajamas!â
âKade!â
âDonât tempt me.â He winks. âGet dressed.â
I go into the bedroom and close the door behind me. ~What the hell am I doing right now? Archie will hate it if I get a tattoo.~
~Kade is so kind, and the way he looks at meâ¦~
Kade bangs on the door. âDonât think youâre going to hide from me. Weâre leaving in five minutes, whether youâre dressed or not.â He laughs but sounds serious.
~Donât think about it, do something for yourself, throw away the planâ¦~ For some reason, that sounds wonderful right now. I throw on some clothes and open the door.
He gives me an animated smile. âAttagirl! I knew you could do it, come on!â
Kade shows me down to where his car is and lets me in.
I laugh. âKade, this is ~insane~.â
âItâs not. People get tattoos all the time; Iâm covered in them.â
âBut what will I get?â
âI donât know. It doesnât have to be something crazy; even something small is good. Just live in the moment.â
âUhâ¦â
âStart with where you want it.â
âMaybe my wrist?â
âRight there, where everyone can see it?â He chuckles.
â~Kade~! I thought you were supposed to be making me feel better?â
âI am! Iâm impressed. Archie will see it.â
~âSo?â~
âWhoa! Yes! I like this Sloan,â he says excitedly.
âYou didnât like me before?â
âI always shamelessly flirt, go on coffee dates, and eat Chinese food with people I donât like, how did you know?â he says with a sarcastic grin.
I shove his shoulder. âIt wasnât a date.â
âIt was,â he insists.
âWhy?â
âBecause you let me touch you, you laughed, I paid, you said thank you, and you gave me your number⦠Date!â He winks.
Heat rises to my cheeks, and I donât know what to say, so I let the first thing that comes to mind slip out. âDonât dates end in a kiss?â
He gasps. âSloan! What do you take me for? I donât kiss on the first date.â
I laugh. âOh, my gosh.â
âWhat?â
âYou are so funny. I donât know, you just make me smile.â
âTick.â
âKade!â
