SLOAN
âGonna get me drunk?â I tease.
âMaybe, what are you like when youâre drunk?â
âI guess it depends on the company.â
Kade opens the car door for me, then rounds the car and joins me inside. âExplain.â He smiles as he starts the car.
âI donât think Iâve been drunk with another human being since before I met Archie. Heâd pick on me if I got sloppy and he always needs me to drive him home.â
âWhat about on your birthday?â
âI guess it depends on what day it falls.â
âWhat does that mean?â
âIf itâs the weekend, then maybe Archie will take me to dinner and buy me a glass of wine. If itâs a weekday, I get flowers,â I explain.
âWait, wait, my brain is fried.â
âWhat?â
âStop me when Iâm wrong. Archie doesnât let you drink when you go out, and instead of taking care of you and getting you home safely, you take care of him.
âThere is a world in which youâre okay with your boyfriend not seeing you on your birthday, not because he has a legitimate reason, but just because itâs a weekday.â
I didnât stop him, because he isnât exactly wrong.
âSince you didnât stop me; Iâm going to assume Iâm right. Sloanââ
âWait, one thing was wrong,â I add.
âWhat?â
âYou said Iâm okay with it. Iâm not, but itâs just the way it is.â
âWhy donât you say something to him?â
âI, uh, well, honestly, I donât think I ever realized how much it was bothering me until now,â I admit.
âHow can that be?â
âI think I explained away his bad behavior because I was trying to stick to the plan.â
âSloan, Iâm not telling you how to live your lifeâmaybe that works for youâbut if you were mine, Iâd spend every spare minute with you.
âIâd take off work on your birthday and Iâd cuddle you to sleep whenever I could.â
âWhy?â
âBecause youâre beautiful, smart, and funny, and whoever gets to have you in their life should treat you like youâre precious.â He smiles so genuinely that it makes my heart flip.
âKadeâ¦â
âIâm sorry, but itâs true.â
âHow do you know? You barely know me.â
But instead of answering me, he sings âCrimson and Cloverâ while closing his eyes.
When he sings my favorite song again, I melt inside and almost lose myself in the moment. ~Is this real life?~ Maybe this is just a game to him but I like him too much to stay away from him.
âKade, like, whatâs the best-case scenario here?â
Kade smiles. âYouâre happy and get what you deserve.â
He is quiet the rest of the way to my apartment; I can tell heâs thinking, âKade? Is everything okay?â
âYes, just trying to get my head right,â he says without looking at me.
âWhat do you mean?â
âYouâre my friendâ¦thatâs it, and no matter how badly I want to grab your face and kiss you, I canât. I need to get that into my head.â
âIâm sorry.â
âStop, I knew what I was getting into. But Sloan, I canât walk away from you,â he admits breathlessly.
âWhy?â
âYouâre it. Youâre everything and you donât even know it. Even if itâs only as a friend, I need you in my life.â
The rest of the ride is silent, and I canât help thinking, what if Kade is better for me than Archie? What is Archie doing right now? Why do I want Kade to stay with me? ~What is happening?~
Before I know it, weâre pulling up in front of my building, and Kade seems to have come back to normal. âCome on, bad girl, letâs go get drunk.â
I pull him up the stairs and let him inside. Soon, heâs handing me another beer.
I laugh. âNope, donât open it.â
âWhy?â
âBeer before liquor makes you sicker; liquor before beer, youâre in the clear.â
âWhat?â
âJust put them back.â I giggle before I go over to another countertop and start to hoist myself up until Iâm standing on it.
âWhat are you doing?â Kade asks as he runs up behind me to make sure I donât fall.
âGetting my hidden stash,â I explain.
I pass him a bottle of rum, and he laughs at me before helping me down.
âWhy is that up there?â
âIf Iâm too drunk, then I canât get it.â
He smiles. âSloan, youâre the cutest.â
I laugh. âOkay, so listen, letâs do a power hour.â
âA what?â
âDo you have to be anywhere tomorrow?â
âNot exactly.â
âOkay.â I pull out a large pitcher and dump the rum into it, then empty a few cans of soda into it as well.
Kade laughs. âWhy do I feel like you might be trying to kill me?â
âAre you saying I can out-drink you?â I tease.
âAbsolutely not.â
âCome on, itâs just a sorority game, you can handle it.â I pass him two shot glasses and saunter to the couch, hoping I can entice him.
âSloan, you know what youâre doing to me.â
âHanging out with my best friend?â
He laughs. âYeah, okay, letâs go with that.â
I search for a funny power hour on YouTube. âEvery minute, you take a drink. Since itâs just us two, we will do half shots.â
âAnd what if I donât want to?â
âThen you lose, and I get to decide your fate.â
âSo, if you lose?â
âI suppose, you get to make me do something.â
âSloan, this is too good to pass up.â He chuckles. âBuckle up, buttercup.â
Soon, the first song starts to play, and we take our first shot. The first few go by in a blur, and weâre laughing before I realize Iâm losing myself a little bit.
An old Rihanna song comes on, and I canât stop myself from dancing. âCome on, Kade!â
He stands up, and I grind my ass into him, just enjoying the moment.
âSloan,â he groans.
The minute goes by, and we plop back onto the couch and take another shot. I turn to check on Kade, and our eyes meet, and for some reason, I really want to kiss him but I restrain myself.
âIn Da Clubâ starts to play, and I canât help myself. Iâm dancing and swaying in front of Kade, and he wraps his arms around my waist, pulling me down.
âSloan, Iâm trying so hard to respect you, but youâre making me crazy.â
âSorry, Kade, I didnât mean to. I guess I was justââ
âStop, youâre not doing anything wrong, but Iâm not going to lay a hand on you until you deal with Archie. Youâre endgame, and I know it. I wonât mess it up by moving too fast.â
âKadeââ
âJust trust me. Right now is not when we should talk about this. Letâs just have fun, but no more lap dances!â
âOkay, Kade.â I stop the video and look at him. âIâm sorry, I got caught up. Iâm not trying to be an ass.â
âSloan, itâs fine. I want you, and you know thatâIâve made no secretâbut Iâm not going there until youâre ready... even if party girl, here, is ready...
âI want the real thing; youâre worth waiting for.â He smiles, and I swear, I can feel it in my soul.
