Chapter 1283
Eleanor arrived home to see Hailey and Nina bustling about the kitchen, the sight bringing a tear to her eye.
â
She could have gone to find Bernard, but there were two people she couldnât bear to leave behind that would be the two people in the kitchen.
Hailey y was married to Cedric, protected by a husband and tethered by a child. Eleanor didnât worry too much about her. But Nina...
Nina had lost her parents and her foster father. Her only support was Eleanor and Bernard. With Bernard gone, and Eleanor, perhaps soon to follow, what would happen to Nina?
Eleanor stood frozen, then turned to head upstairs, pulling out her phone to message Evelyn Ziegler.
Ever since winning the custody battle, Evelyn had occasionally visited Nina. Perhaps it was Eleanorâs magnanimity and parenting style that had won Evelyn over. She had mellowed out, becoming less brash and more gentle.
Like any grandmother visiting her granddaughter, Evelyn brought a heap of gifts for Nina every time, winning over both the child and Eleanor. Their relationship had grown a little closer.
Eleanor messaged Evelyn, asking her to visit Nina occasionally. She did not entrust Nina to Evelyn, but merely informed her of an upcoming business trip that would keep her away for some time. She didnât want Nina to be lonely, and requested Evelyn to keep her company.
She then called Pearce and George, asking them to stay at Fiord Roundabout for a while. Pearce and George were unaware of the Siren Organization or Area Opaca. They only knew that Eleanor would entrust Nina to them whenever she had to leave, and they were more than happy to accept.
Itâs not that Eleanor didnât trust Hailey, but Hailey was pregnant and taking care of a child would be exhausting. Thinking of this, Eleanorâs thoughts drifted to Liana. If Liana was still here, she would have left Nina in her care. Liana, who couldnât have children of her own, yearned for a child and loved children...
Eleanor put down her phone, walked to the window, and gazed at the radiant moon in the night sky. After a moment, she caressed her belly.
âLiana, Iâm pregnant. Itâs a bit late, but you can finally be a godmother.â
She couldnât visit Lianaâs grave to share the good news for now. But once she returned safely, she would go to Panama to visit Liana.
Eleanor joined Hailey and Nina for dinner, managing to maintain a calm and steady demeanor. Hailey, worried that Eleanorâs calmness hid a deeper despair, wanted to stay and take care of her but was refused.
âDonât worry, Iâm fine. Besides, I have Bryson and Scott at home.â
Still, Hailey was worried. âTheyâre all men. They canât enter your bedroom. I should stay and be with you.â
Eleanor patted Ninaâs head. âI have her to sleep with me. What are you worried about?â
She looked at Haileyâs belly. âI heard from Cedric that your pregnancy isnât stable. You should go back and rest. I donât want to explain to Cedric if anything happens to you or the baby.â
Hailey touched her belly, unconcerned. âIâm more worried about you right now than the baby.â
Eleanor went forward and hugged her. âHailey, donât worry. Iâll be fine Hailey patted her back. âI hope you will be.â
She didnât want Eleanor to leave like Liana did, promising not to worry and then disappearing silently. For Hailey, Eleanor was her inseparable kin since childhood. She couldnât bear the thought of losing her.
She didnât want to let go of Eleanor, but Eleanor gently pushed her away. Hailey wanted to say something more, but Eleanor steered her outside and into the car.
âIâll come and check on you first thing tomorrow morning, Eleanor.â
Hearing this, Eleanor felt a twinge of sorrow. She waved as Haileyâs car drove off.
âIâm sorry, Hailey. Bernard is missing, and I need to find him and bring him home.â
She stood there until the car was out of sight. Then, holding Ninaâs hand, she returned home. After putting Nina to bed, she wrote a letter, mixed sleeping pills into two glasses of milk, and handed them to Bryson and Scott.
Once the men were sound asleep, she dismissed the guards outside and left the house with her prepared suitcase and a bag full of prenatal vitamins.
But halfway down the road, she ran into Robinâs car.
