Chapter 1374 Eleanor furrowed her brow, a clear sign of confusion, prompting Yates to tilt his head slightly with curiosity.
âDo you know something?â he asked.
To avoid arousing Yatesâ suspicions, Eleanor shook her head gently. It was better to keep silent until she had concrete evidence.
Her top priority was finding a way to reach Bernard. She had to share everything she knew, to prevent him from unknowingly remaining undercover in the enigmatic Area Opaca.
âCan you get Bernard out?â she asked.
Yatesâ fingers, previously interlaced on the table, twitched slightly. âEleanor, I assure you, I havenât restricted Bernardâs freedom.â
âIf you havenât restricted him, then why hasnât he come home? Why hasnât he even made a phone call?â Eleanor had been puzzled before. If Area Opaca didnât limit their operativesâ freedom, why hadnât Bernard contacted her in 23 days?
Now, with her thoughts becoming clearer, she began to suspect that Yates was indeed restricting Bernardâs personal freedom; otherwise, Bernard would have reached out to her.
But why would Yates restrict Bernard? Unless he knew about Bernardâs true identity â yet Yatesâ probing didnât seem to suggest that he knew.
It was as if Yates could read Eleanorâs mind. He stared into her eyes, and said deliberately, âThe rule Iâve set is that operatives from Area Opaca are free to come and go as they please, and they can contact the outside world at will. Area Opaca doesnât interfere with that.â
âAs for why Bernard hasnât returned home or contacted you, I honestly have no idea...â
âActually... I only found out about your marriage after you left when I saw the surveillance tapes.â
Having said that, Yates looked even more puzzled than Eleanor, his gaze fixed on her face.
âWhat has always seemed strange to me,â he pressed on, âis why Bernard, a man who seemingly possesses everything, keep coming back to Area Opaca to gamble with his life?â
Eleanorâs expression shifted slightly. She wasnât sure if Yates was probing her about Bernardâs identity or if, knowing Bernardâs identity, he was engaging in a mental game with her.

After weighing her options silently, she spoke nonchalantly, âHeâs always been a bit of a gambler, thatâs all.â
âAnd you would choose such a man?â Yates questioned, his voice laced with a mix of intrigue and control. Eleanor was unsure if Yates knew about Bernardâs identity and hesitated to make any rash moves.
Yates was exploiting this uncertainty, manipulating Eleanor with his words. âIâve seen the surveillance footage of Bernard pressuring you for a divorce.
It wasnât his idea â Sophie forced him to do it. But Bernard could have chosen a more gentle way to let you go. Instead, he opted for the cruelest method, coldly pushing you away. That alone shows that he doesnât love you as he should. So, my dear, donât hold onto any hope for him. Itâs not worth it.â
Eleanor felt a sting in her heart upon hearing Yatesâ words because she had felt the same way before. But now, she thought it best to put those feelings aside until she could see Bernard in person.
âAll this talk, and you still wonât release Bernard. That tells me youâre hiding something,â she accused.
Yates, took a deep breath and, with a nonchalant lift of his chin, said, âIf you insist on seeing him, Iâll go to Area Opaca tomorrow and have him drop whatever heâs doing to meet you.â
Yates seemed entirely unfazed as he said this, as if he hadnât restricted Bernardâs freedom at all, and it was merely Bernardâs own choice not to come out.
Eleanor couldnât quite see through Yatesâ tactics and didnât readily trust him. She thought of a compromise, âCanât you just call him now and have him come to Canada to see me?â
Yates sat up a little straighter, taken aback by how smart and calm Eleanor was.
âHeâs currently on a mission with Team 1-4. They canât be disturbed,â he explained.
