Chapter 1483
The moment Eleanor realized the old claiming to be her grandfather was indeed speaking the truth, she felt a wave of annoyance wash over her. It had taken her long enough to come to terms with having a husband and children, and now to add a grandfather into the mix was just too much. A headache began to pound at her temples.
Seeing Eleanor press a hand to her forehead, Hailey voiced her concern, âShe canât handle stress right now. If you really want to help her regain her memory, then youâll have to wait until sheâs adjusted.â
Yates nodded in understanding but didnât leave. Instead, he leaned on his cane and made his way into the room. âI know she canât be agitated at the moment, but Eleanor, Bernard doesnât have the luxury of time.â
Haileyâs heart tightened, fearful of the provocative words Yates might utter, words that could send Eleanor spiraling into unconsciousness again. She moved to intervene, but Yates was quicker, addressing her, âMs. Vulpe, if you donât mind, Iâd like a few words alone with Eleanor.â
Yatesâ polite request left Hailey with no choice. She was soon escorted out by Yatesâ associate, leaving her to gaze anxiously through the glass window of the hospital room.
Under Eleanorâs bewildered gaze, Yates approached the bedside, pulled up a chair, and sat down slowly. After a moment of silence, he looked down at the baby and said, âNever thought Iâd meet my great-grandchild before I died. I suppose thatâs one regret I wonât carry to the grave.â
Eleanor didnât understand the old manâs words. She protectively cradled the baby closer, not because she remembered anything he had done, but because Haileyâs evident fear of him suggested this so-called grandfather was no good.
As Yates saw the wariness in her eyes, he let out a resigned chuckle, âEven with your memory gone, youâre still so guarded against me. Stubborn to the core. But if youâre so stubborn, why canât you remember Bernard?â
Eleanor detected the mockery in his voice, and her tone turned icy, âStubbornness is in my bones, but my memory isnât something I can control. If youâre trying to mock me for that, youâre sadly mistaken.â
Yates smiled, âIâm not mocking you. Iâm mocking Bernard. He gave everything for you, and in return, youâve forgotten him. Itâs quite the victory for me.â
Confused, Eleanor asked, âHow does my forgetting him a victory for you?â
Yates leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, and stared into Eleanorâs puzzled eyes. âBernard is my enemy. Iâve wanted him dead. So, in pursuit of that goal, I used you to hurt him. But the old you wouldâve despised me for it. Now, with no memory of the man 1/2 08:37 Chapter 1483 you cherished above all else, youâre inadvertently on my side. Once Bernard is dead, itâll be my triumph.â
The word âdeadâ caused Eleanorâs heart to seize. She looked at Yates, disbelief etched on her face, âI may have lost my memory, but Iâm not out of my mind. How could I ever be part of something so vile?â
Yates raised an eyebrow, âOnce upon a time, you leveraged my power to kill your own biological father and your half-sister. You were more ruthless than I could ever be. Now a little memory loss, and youâre too scared to harm a fly?â
Her ears rejected his words, âThatâs impossible. Iâm an orphan. I donât even know who my parents are, let alone kill them with your help.â
He smirked, âThe more impossible it seems, the more possible it becomes. Just like you losing your memory â itâs something I never thought Iâd see.â
The conversation was tearing Eleanor apart, her head splitting with pain. âI donât understand what youâre saying, and I donât want to hear any more.
Iâve forgotten, so let me forget. Stop pushing me...â
Yatesâ face softened as he watched Eleanor clutch her head, her face turning pale with agony. He hesitated before speaking again, âIâm not here to torment you. I came to share some good news.â He paused, then with the grin of a conqueror, he revealed, âBernard has a virus-laden chip implanted in his brain. Once it activates, heâll die. How fortunate...â
The words âheâll dieâ echoed like a death knell in Eleanorâs head, sending her into a pain so fierce she curled into herself, her whole body convulsing, âIt hurts... so much... help me...â
Reaching out for Yatesâ help to ease her pain, he instead cradled the child in his arms and lifted the baby high, âEleanor, this is Bernardâs cursed offspring. Itâs better off dead!â
âNo, donât...â
Tears streamed down her cheeks as she lost consciousness, her eyes rolling back in her head.

Outside, Haileyâs anguished cries filled the hallway, âYates! I told you not to agitate her! Why did you do it anyway? Now sheâs out again! Are you happy now? Are you satisfied?!â
Ignoring the commotion, Yates simply instructed Moore to attend to Eleanor immediately.
