Chapter Forty Three.
IVY.
We sit in the lounge room all together, Callum freshly showered tucked in between me and Micah.
Callum swallows hard, his fingers curling into the fabric of his pants. He doesnât look at any of us as he starts speaking.
âI was cutting through Blackridge to get home faster,â he mutters. âWasnât paying attention, just walking. Then someone grabbed me.â
Eliasâ expression sharpens, his whole body stiffening. âWho?â
Callum shakes his head. âI donât know. There were two of them. Alphas. One shoved me into the wall, the other went for my pockets. I thought it was a muggingâuntil I scented them.â
Silence.
Theoâs jaw tightens. âThey were Alphas?â
Callum nods, exhaling sharply. âYeah.â
I shift closer to him on instinct, my Omega instincts screaming at me to comfort, to soothe. But Callum doesnât lean in the way he usually would. Heâs still too tense, too shaken.
Elias takes a slow, measured breath, but I can see the way his fists clench. The way his pupils darken, his scent growing sharper, more dominant, filling the space with a silent warning.
âKeep going,â Theo says, voice unreadable but laced with barely restrained fury.
Callum hesitates. âThey were saying something, but IâI was too focused on getting away. One of them pulled a knife.â He glances down at his hands, like heâs still seeing the blood even though itâs been washed away. âI fought back. Got one of them off me, shoved the other hard enough to break away. Then I ran.â His voice is hoarse now. âI donât think they followed me, but I didnât stop until I got here.â
Micah presses closer to him, offering warmth and scenting him subtly. A soft, grounding thing. Callum doesnât pull away, but his shoulders remain taut.
Elias is silent for a long moment, then he steps forward, slow and deliberate. âYou shouldâve called me the second this happened.â
Callum flinches. âI didnât want you toââ
âI donât care.â Eliasâ voice is sharp, edged with something dangerously close to fury. He is whiskey and fire, dominance thick in the air, barely leashed. And if I couldnât feel his worry through the bond, Iâd be petrified. âYou were jumped, Callum. By Alphas.â
Callum nods, swallowing.
Eliasâ jaw tightens. âYou think we wouldnât want to know about that?â
Callum looks away. âI didnât want this to turn into something bigger than it already is.â
Theo exhales, arms crossed. âItâs already bigger, Callum. You donât get randomly jumped by Alphas. Thatâs not how this works.â His eyes are unreadable, but thereâs steel in his voice. âThis wasnât an accident.â
I glance between them. âSo what do we do now?â
Elias doesnât hesitate. âWe find out who they are.â
Callum tenses. âAnd then?â
Elias meets his gaze, unflinching. âAnd then we make sure they donât try it again.â
Callum doesnât answer, but I can see the conflict in his expression.
Theo is watching him closely. âYouâre still not telling us everything.â
Callumâs jaw tightens. âI donât know everything.â He exhales, rubbing a hand over his face. âI didnât recognize them. And I donât know if they recognized me.â
A sick feeling twists in my stomach.
Elias is still staring at Callum, his gaze intense. âIf they were just random bastards looking to start trouble, weâll find out. If this was something elseââ He exhales slowly, his control razor-thin. âWeâll handle it.â
Callum swallows, finally leaning into Micahâs touch. âI donât want a war.â
Elias looks at him, and something in his expression softens just slightly. âYou think I do?â His voice is quieter now, but no less firm. âI want you safe, Callum. Thatâs all that matters.â
Callum exhales shakily.
Elias looks at Theo, âIâll start asking around.â
Theo nods. âI want names by morning.â
Micah shifts closer to me, scenting the air, his own Omega instincts flaring. âTonight, we stay close,â he murmurs, looking at Callum. âNo one sleeps alone.â
Callum hesitates, then nods.
And even though no one says it out loud, we all feel itâthe shift in the air.
Whatever happened tonight, itâs only the beginning.

The following couple of days are tense, the pack house locked down under Elias and Theoâs command. No one comes in or out without their say-so, and the constant buzz of tension has settled into every room like a storm waiting to break.
Iâm lying on my bed, painting my nails, phone pressed between my shoulder and ear as Morganâs voice fills the space. Sheâs pissedârightfully so, given that she had to hear about my official mating with Theo and Callumâs attack from Clara instead of me.
I had to call in to work. You try dodging a curious or concerned Clara.
âSo is Callum okay?â she asks, her frustration finally giving way to concern.
I let out a slow sigh, blowing on my nails. âYeah.â A beat. âSort of.â
The truth is, I donât know how to answer that question. Physically, Callum is fineâno serious injuries, nothing that wonât healâbut emotionally? Heâs a ghost of himself.
I glance toward the door, listening to the quiet hum of the house. Both Alphas have taken over the lounge room with work, their presence a silent but constant reassurance that weâre protected. Micah is holed up in his office, still buried under a deadline. And Callum... Callum is nowhere. He drifts. He doesnât cook, doesnât study, barely even looks at his garden.
I swallow, the weight of it pressing against my chest. âNo,â I admit, voice softer. âNot really. Weâreâ¦â I hesitate, my throat tightening. âWeâre really worried about him.â
Morgan is silent for a beat, then her tone shifts, soft and full of understanding. âOh, honey.â
That warmth, that Morgan-ness, nearly undoes me.
âYou poor loves,â she murmurs. âIt must be so stressful! Any idea who it could have been?â
I hesitate, shifting on the bed. âNo. Thatâs the worst part.â
Elias and Theo have been working nonstop, calling in favors, digging through every possible lead, but nothing has turned up. The Alphas who attacked Callum were strangers. No pack affiliation, no names, no clear motive. Just Alphas, waiting in the dark, and that fact alone makes my stomach churn.
Morgan exhales. âYou know I can ask around, right? My Alpha..uh..ehm..friend has got connectionsâmight hear something Elias and Theo havenât.â
I hesitate. I should clear that with them first, but at the same time⦠we need answers. And right now, I donât care where they come from.
ââ¦Yeah,â I say finally. âYeah, that would help.â
âDone,â she says immediately. âAnd, babe? Make sure youâre looking after yourself too, alright?â
I close my eyes, exhaling slowly. âIâll try.â
Itâs the best I can do.
