Chapter 9: Your parents...
The Healer's Mate
Chapter 9: Your parents...
Layla's POV
"Goodbye! I'll see you soon."
Alpha Neal and the rest of the pack was leaving today. As decided I would stay the remaining two weeks with Iris and Alexis posing as my personal guides.
I hugged Alpha Neal and he got into one of the Jeeps riding shot gun with Derek.
"Stay safe Layla and I'll see you in a week." he said and rolled the window up.
That was four hours ago and since then all I have done is sit in my room and listen to the music. Alexis and Iris were in their final year of high school so they had a fixed nine to three schedule and the remainder of the pack was busy with their daily chores.
Jayden had distanced himself from me.
I thought back to yesterday when he said,
"We can't tell our packs about us being mates."
Remaining hard headed and impulsive as ever I had left him standing there and returned to pack house. I hadn't seen him at the breakfast table this morning and he didn't show up when Alpha Cairstay said farewell to Alpha Neal. I gave up trying to find him and retreated to my room.
I don't know where this new found courage was coming from but I planned on dragging it out as far as I could.
I got up and brushed nonexistent dust from my jeans and pulled on a long sleeve shirt walking out of my room. I stepped out of my room and looked to my right. If he wanted to ignore me and push me away when I had opened up to him then it was his loss, I was going to enjoy this week of freedom. I walked downstairs and entered the kitchen; I saw Vivian, the Alpha female, sitting at the breakfast nook sorting out mail and I decided the polite thing to do was greet her.
"Hello, Luna." I said bowing slightly when I had her attention.
She got up and straightened her pants, "Oh drop the formalities! Call me Vivian. You have helped this pack tremendously, your basically family!" she said giving me a smile and I found myself reciprocating it.
"Oh! Come around I was just about to make a cup of tea, would you like one Layla?" she said opening a cabinet and taking out two tea bags.
"Sure." I walked over and took out two cups remembering where they were kept from the day I had brought down my dishes.
Vivian handed me my cup of tea and smiled at me again. She held this kind persona that made me feel that I could trust her. I felt comfortable and relaxed when I was with her.
A quality very Luna should posses.
"I wanted to personally thank you for helping my son, Jayden. He has had some rough patches in his life but I always knew he could get over them. Seeing him so different and cold when he sided with Richard broke my heart and the thought that it would forever rip my son away from me scared me." She looked into her cup as if all the answers to her worries were hidden there and I felt her pain and sadness of losing someone close to her.
"Yesterday when he came and joined us for dinner I knew that my son was not lost, sure it will take time for him to return to his former self but I'm more than willing to wait." She looked at me smiling as if she knew something I didn't , "I see how he looks at you, it's hard to hide your emotion from your mother. He has taken a liking to you and I ask that you support him as a friend if not more."
I gulped and thought if only she knew the whole truth.
"I'll do everything I can to help you get your son back." I said reaching out to grab her hand and squeeze it in my own.
We talked for a while before I headed outside. I crossed my arms and walked around to the front of the pack house. I saw two white cars pull into the garage and saw Iris, Alexis, Damon, and Jared coming out of the garage.
"Hey! Layla guess who gets to be my plus one tonight?" Alexis said when she was in front of me.
"Jared?" I guess because he was her mate and it was the logical choice.
"No! This is a girls night out! Iris and I are planning on going clubbing to celebrate me getting accepted into a top Fashion Designing program! And since we are werewolves age does not matter! Well unless you're a pup." She said smiling.
"I'll have something picked out for you so don't worry." She smiled and I looked to Iris worried what kind of clothes she had in mind.
**********
And that was how I found myself standing in front of my mirror wearing what could hardly be called a dress. It was a black sequent skater style dress with silver chains giving the illusion of half sleeves. My hair was tied up into a messy bun with some stands left out to frame my face.
Alexis stepped back and gave me a once over. She had her chin perched on her hand and her eyebrows were pulled together analysing every last detail.
"Okay! Darling! You look Fab-u-lous." she gave me two claps had walked out of my room signalling me to follow her. I saw Iris waiting downstairs and we later piled into her Corvette and left.
"So what kind of club is this?" I asked sitting in the back seat.
Alexis turned around and said, "Since we are still under age to actually go to a club run by humans we go to The Full Moon. It opens all night thus the name but what most humans who come there every night don't know is that it belongs to one of our pack members and he allows werewolves who he thinks can handle themselves in."
I nodded as Iris pulled into a parking spot behind a red bricked building. It was dark out but to most people hanging around the entrance, their night was just beginning.
"Hey Mike! Three tonight!" Alexis said to the bouncer outside the door. He let us in and I heard groans and shouts of protest behind us when we walked passed him.
"I'm going to go get us a table upstairs." Alexis said and disappeared into the crowd.
"You can go up as well. I'll get us something to drink and I'll meet you there." Iris said and made her way to the circular bar the was in the centre of the floor.
I looked around to see where Alexis went and I saw a staircase over at the back of the room. Music blasted through the speakers and I saw bodied grinding on each other. I weaved my way through the crowd and walked along the wall but before I could reach the first step the door in front of me opened and a muscular arm wrapped around my waist. I tried to scream but the man covered my mouth with his other hand and dragged me outside. I kicked and scratched at his hands but he didn't budge. He slammed my back against the outside wall of the club and wrapped his hands around my neck.
"My, my. You have grown since the last time I saw you."
His voice made him sound old but his strength differed. I wrapped my own hands around his and tried to pry my way out of his hold. He was cutting off my air supply and I was beginning to see black spots.
"L-let me g-go." I said but it only made him laugh.
He dropped me and I fell on my hands and knees, gasping for air.
"If they could see you now, so weak and pathetic," he said taking a few steps back and concealing his face in the darkness, "they would thank me for murdering them seven years ago."
"W-who?" I asked fearing the answer.
"Your parents."
"You're lying! They were killed by human hunters!" I said standing up.
He laughed and said, "No Layla, poor Donna and Peter were getting in the way of my plan. They had to be killed."
He paused but didn't come out of the darkness.
"I quite enjoyed killing them. Especially your mother. The shot went right through her head!"
"You BASTARD!" I jumped towards him my every action fuelled by the anger and pain I felt.
This man killed my parents and had the nerve to gloat about his shot!
He blocked my feeble attempt of attacking him and swept his arm into my side knocking me off my feet. I landed on my ribs and felt my bones crack. I heard a car passing by and the alley way fill with light.
"I will be back, sooner than you expect, and now that I know where you are my plan just become easier."
I turned my head to get a good look at my attacker but he was gone.
"Layla!" I heard someone call me and I heard the car door slam shut.
The familiar scent of mint and the forest filled by lungs when he picked me up into his arms. I moved towards him soaking up the warmth and comfort his touch brought me. I felt him lay me down in the back seat and in a matter of seconds I was consumed by darkness.
A/N Sorry I didn't get to post this chapter yesterday. It is a major plot development chapter so I wanted to make a proper outline before I posted it.
HINT! The next chapter has something that starts with a K and ends with a S.
