Chapter 12: I'm her boyfriend...

The Healer's Mate

Chapter 12: I'm her boyfriend...

I sat at the breakfast table and picked at the cereal that floated around in my bowl. Andrew and Tony sat beside me and across from me sat Kegan. Alpha Neal had his newspaper held in front of his face and was sipping on his daily coffee. Jayden was wearing his usual black jeans and button up shirt. His hair was still slightly wet but just made him look even more attractive.

I didn't notice I was staring until he flashed me a knowing smirk and sat down beside Kegan.

"So Jayden. Do you have any plans today? I can take you along to meet some of my pack today if you'd like." Alpha Neal said setting his newspaper on the table and looking at him.

"Sure Alpha Neal, it would be nice to meet some of the wolves from the White Thorn pack." Jayden said and took a piece of buttered toast.

"Hey, is it true that were the future Alpha for the Shadows and that you lost your wolf?" Andrew said smiling and looking at Jayden.

"Andrew that is none of your concern and he does not have to answer that." Alpha Neal said and looked to Jayden, "Sorry my son can be ignorant to his surroundings."

"No its okay." Jayden said and looked to Andrew. He leaned back in his chair and squared his shoulders, raising his chin he said, "Yes I did lose my wolf but if I had not lost him you would not be sitting here because as the rightful Alpha and leader of the Shadows I would had wiped out every pack in this country including the one I belong to now. So don't assume I have changed or now favour other packs. I am still the only Alpha the Shadows have and can call on them any second."

I saw Andrew gulp and the table had fallen silent. I looked at Jayden but his eyes were burning a hole in Andrew. Hearing him speak with power and authority caused my insides to stir and my body to become restless. All I wanted to do was kiss him. I blushed remembering our first kiss.

"Well thank you for breakfast Kate." Jayden got up and carried his dishes to the sink. He told Alpha Neal that he would meet him outside and left the kitchen.

"He gives me the creeps." Andrew said.

Kegan, Tony, and Andrew left after Alpha Neal and Jayden and I got my bicycled out from back of the garage and began peddling to Northern.

I had only been gone for a week so I wasn't too far behind but I had a lot of catching up to do with notes. I locked my bike and walked into my first class.

I would be lying if I said walking into the lecture theatre didn't turn heads. I saw a few girls whispering and giving me quick glances. I walked down to the first row and sat down. I pulled out my notebook and wrote the date. A few more students piled into the room and I felt my phone buzz inside my pocket. I had picked it off my table this morning.

I'm sorry for what I did. Meet me after class? - Noah

I looked back and saw him sitting a few seats up staring at me. He mouthed please but I didn't respond, turning back in my seat I tried to focus on my notes. I felt my phone buzz again and it read,

Please Layla. Just two minutes.

I texted back a quick No and turned my phone off.

I didn't hear from Noah after and I stuck to staying in the library and only going to class to avoid any extra attention being drawn to me. I didn't see much of my brothers either so I was able to breathe normally without having to fear any unexpected run it or injury.

The day went by and my last class was just wrapping up. I waited until the lecture theatre cleared out before I got up. I bent down to pick up my bag when I saw someone come and stand in front of me. I straightened up and saw Noah.

"Can we talk?" he said keeping a neutral expression

"What do you want from me?" I said and slung my bag over my shoulder. I turned around and began to walk up the stairs. I could hear him following me and I opened the building doors, walking to where I had locked my bicycle.

"I just want to apologise. I really didn't mean to record you. It was a lame joke and a stupid prank Kegan forced me to play." he pleaded.

"If it was so lame and stupid why did you do it?" I said and abruptly stopped in my steps. "You know what, I don't care and if you're looking for an apology, tough luck." I said and began to walk at a faster pace.

"Layla if you just listen to me you'll know that I'm still your friend and that I truly am sorry. This isn't another prank. I'm serious." he said but I ignored his words because I knew it was all bullshit.

I began to plug in the numbers for my bike lock when I saw a familiar car pull up in front of me. Noah took no notice of it but from the minty forest scent that invaded my senses I knew exactly who was inside the car.

I stopped and watched as the car door opened, I saw his hair and strong shoulders as he got out of the car. He turned around and leaned over the top. He had ditched his glasses for a pair of aviators and his hair was styled in a messy but clean way.

"Hey Angel, you ready to go?" Jayden said and I could sense him assess Noah.

"Hey man can you wait? I'm trying to talk to her." Noah said and grabbed my elbow.

I saw Jayden's jaw clench and his shoulders flexed. He walked around to me and easily pulled me into his side. His warm hand was sending my senses into hyper drive and from finally seeing him after spending the day apart made me realise how much I missed him and needed his touch.

"Layla, who is this guy?" Noah said still holding my elbow.

Jayden reached over and grabbed Noah hand. He twisted his wrist and said three words that would be tomorrow's most talked about story on campus

"I'm her boyfriend."

"H-her what?!" Noah said.

Jayden ignored him and opened the passenger side door for me. I climbed into to the car and watched Jayden walk around to the other side.

He opened the door and slid inside. Without giving Noah a single look he took off down the road.

"I heard you rode your bike to school." Jayden said breaking the silence.

"Why did you say that?"

"Ah cutting straight to the point, are we Angel?" he smirked.

I didn't answer him so he continued, "I saw how he looked at you. Trust me he didn't just want to be friends and I can't have any other male looking at my mate like that."

"But not one knows you are my mate. What am I supposed to say when word gets around that some is dating me?" I said turning to look at him.

He pulled up to the garage and turned off the car. He reached over and cupped my cheek in his hand and stroked my cheek with his thumb, "You won't be alone."

I looked into his eyes and all I could see was love and admiration. It melted my insides from just one look from him and I heard myself saying, "Gosh I missed you so much today."

He smirked and said in a husky voice, "I want to kiss you so bad right now."

"Then do it." I whispered looking at his lips.

I leaned forwards but he pulled his hand away, "They can see us. Alpha Neal asked about you and me today. I told him we are just friends and that you helped me a lot when I was hurt."

He continued when I didn't say anything, "He thinks that we are just good friends and warned me that if I hurt you in any way that he would personally see to it."

"Ooh" I lamely said.

I sat back into my seat and looked up to the house. Like Jayden said I saw a body move behind the curtain from Kate and Neal's room.

"We should go inside it's almost dinner." I said, not waiting for his reply I got out and went inside the house.

I said a quick hello to Neal and walked up to my room. I closed the door behind me walking into my washroom. I splashed some cold water on my face and looked in the mirror. I felt so overwhelmed and flustered with my emotions. I heard a knock on my door and walked out of the washroom. Opening the door I saw Kegan standing on the other side.

He handed me a note and walked down the hall.

Meet me in the back after dinner or I'll come and drag you out there myself.

I read the note and crumpled it up throwing it in the dust bin. When I came down for dinner I saw everyone seated around the table. Dinner was mainly quiet with only a few conversations surrounding Jayden. I would occasionally look up at Kegan but he never met my eyes. I got up when I was done eating and headed to the back door.

"Where are you going? Its late." Kate said clearing the table.

Everyone had left to their own business and I thought it would be the best time to slip out and see what Kegan needed.

"I'm going to go take a walk. It's kind of stuffy inside." I said and opened the door. I walked around to the back of the house and stood by the large oak tree. I remembered the many picnics we had here the first year Alpha Neal brought me home. It was hard for me to trust him but once I knew he and Kate only wanted to care for me I opened up to them and I became their daughter.

Seven years and they still didn't know the whole story.

"We need to talk."

I looked over my shoulder and saw Kegan standing a few steps behind me. I turned around giving my full attention to him and he continued.

"Why the hell is that guy here with you? And don't give me that whole visit crap. Something happened. I want to know what." He said crossing the distance between us and looking down at me.

"Nothing happened. He is just a friend." I said. I didn't look up but I wish I did because the second those words left my mouth I felt his hand connect with my cheek.

"I told you not to fucking lie to me and to not try anything special on your trip." He said and grabbed my hair pulling my face level with his. My hands went up to his trying to free myself from his grasp.

"I see the way he looks at you. With lust." He said through clenched teeth. "You're fucking him!"

He pushed me to the ground and I stumbled back.

"I will make you and him regret ever coming back to this pack. You are an anchor and it's time we let you go."
