Chapter 5: It's a message...
The Healer's Mate
Chapter 5: It's a message...
Beep. Beep. Beep.
"Layla dear wake up" I heard Kate's voice and felt her brush my hair from my forehead.
I opened my eyes to see her smiling and got up. I went through the motions of getting ready and was glad that Alpha Neal had decided on six as our departure time making it easier to avoid my brothers who were most likely passed out. I grabbed my bag and went downstairs.
"Good Morning Alpha Neal"
He was drinking his coffee and reading his morning newspaper when I came down.
"Morning Layla, you ready to go?" he said not looking up from his paper.
I grabbed a plate and stacked two pancakes which I drowned with syrup and strawberries.
"Someone's hungry." I heard him say and looked up to see his teasing smile.
I shrugged my shoulder and dug in. I was in a better mood that usual. I had this feeling that these next few days were going to be eventful. I knew we were going as back up for a possible death battle between sworn enemies but I just had this feeling inside me. This buzzing that I couldn't really identify.
"Oh quit teasing her and let her eat. It's been a while since she has properly eaten her breakfast." Kate said walking in. She kissed Neal on his cheek and poured herself a cup of coffee as well. For werewolves who were full of energy they really needed their caffeine fix first thing in the morning.
I finished my breakfast and grabbed a water bottle from the fridge and zipped up my bag securing it on my back. Alpha Neal kissed Kate but lingered a while longer. I stepped out to give them a minute. They were mates. They belonged together so it was hard to separate even for two weeks. I walked out to the garage and saw a few of the pack members eyeing me. I walked over to the back and waited until Alpha Neal arrived.
"Good Morning and thank you for being on time, the medical packages have been loaded into the trucks and since we have equipment we will be travelling in vehicles. But those who wish to run in their wolves, be my guest, it just means more leg room in the jeeps."
A few of the wolves laughed. I noticed that most of the warriors Neal had chosen were of his age and there were only three seniors from Northern.
I rode with Alpha Neal and a one of his high school friends. Half way through the ride I began to feel tired and the buzzing had only increased so I decided to take a quick nap. I fell asleep to the throwbacks Alpha Neal and his friend were listening to on the radio.
"Come on kid. We're almost there. Better wake up and wipe the drool off your face." Alpha Neal's friend, Derek, said.
I sat up and looked out the window. It was dark outside and I could see the stars clearly in the sky. I looked at the clock and it read ten thirty. I slept through the entire day.
I watched the trees pass by, hiding the pack house from clear view.
More like mansion.
Derek pulled up to the main gates and spoke into the intercom. The gates opened and I saw two wolves standing at the front doors. We stopped and Alpha Neal stepped out. We remained in our Jeeps and listened in on the pack link.
Alpha Neal returned and sent the new address around through the link. We were to set base away from the pack house to avoid being found. The Black Moon Festival was tomorrow so the pack was on high alert. We stopped on a street where five houses were rented out for us to stay the two weeks.
Alpha Neal and I along with three more wolves walked into the house we were assigned to. It was a nice house with five bedrooms a nice living space and spacious kitchen. It had a beautiful forest behind it which could be seen from the top floor where my room was.
I sat down on the bed and sighed.
Two week away from the pack.
I pulled out my sleep wear and changed after taking a quick shower. I explored my room and saw a few books on the shelf. I scanned the titles. Nothing appealed to me so settled back on my bed and pulled out some school work I had brought with me. Since I slept most of the day I wasn't going to feel tired until late tomorrow night.
I laid out my books on the bed and began working.
A few hours later I felt someone shaking me. I groaned and mumbled something in my half asleep state.
"Layla get ready and be downstairs in ten minutes. I am going to debrief the group and I want you to be there." Alpha Neal said.
I sat up and rubbed my eyes. I must have fallen asleep doing homework. It truly was the best sleeping remedy.
I entered the living room and saw everyone piled on the couches as Alpha Neal stood by the mantel.
"Okay. I'll start now. As you know today is the Black Moon Festival and the pack holds a celebration to honour their ancestors and the Black Moon. Our directions for the night are to set check points throughout their route on which they will lead their run. We are to only step out if the Shadows attack. We are playing defence in this operation. Understood?"
"Yes Alpha." We responded
"The package you are all holding is a map and set up of the area for tonight. We have been given the chance to survey the land beforehand and I hope you all exercise that chance. Layla, you will be stationed at the house and the Black Moon pack will have a representative to escort you to the pack house once the area is safe."
I nodded when he looked at me and they left to get familiar with the land.
"Layla, I want you to stay in the house at all times. Do not go outside." Alpha Neal said and he too followed the rest of the group out into the forest.
I retreated back to my room and drew back the curtains. I saw the forest and could sense my pack outside hidden within the trees. I lounged around the whole day until night fall when the Black Moon Festival was to begin.
I had heard about the Black Moon Pack and of the prophecy that spoke about a destined pair of lovers who were said to reincarnate. Their love for each other was strong enough that the Goddess had allowed them to be born again and be mated to one another as well.
It was a love made in the Heavens.
A love that I would never have.
It was midnight and I could hear howls in the night. I knew from the tension I felt from my pack members that the Shadows had shown.
But this sense and urge to be out in the forest buzzed inside me. I had to be somewhere. I had to go to someone.
But who?
I brushed this feeling off as anxiety.
I heard a knock on the front door and a voice say, "Layla, I'm from the Black Moon Pack. I was directed by your father, Alpha Neal, to escort you to the pack house."
I reached to grab my coat and spare keys and stepped out into the night air. I got into the car he had brought and we headed to the pack house. I saw the pack house come into view and I could see the lights on the main floor a few people walking behind the curtains.
"There were not much causality but we did lose a few wolves. I don't know how well you are with seeing injuries and blood but I'll warn you there is some who look bad" the man said looking at me once he had pulled into the garage.
I climbed out and followed him through a set of doors that led to the basement. The basement was a large open space which was step up like a training room but for now was a make shift medical room. I was guided to a secluded area where beds were lined against the wall.
I turned hearing Alpha Neal behind me, "We were attacked on one of our hideouts and a few off the wolves were badly injured. I'm hoping you can use your skill to help their healing."
I saw Alpha Cairstay behind Neal. I bowed my head to show respect but I could see he looked exhausted. I turned around and began to work on the wolves. There were seven in total and three of them were the seniors from Northern that had accompanied us.
The first wolf was a fairly young boy, maybe a few years older than me, whose blood had soaked through the thick bandages. His shoulder had a deep bite wound and the bleeding was hard to stop. Again I concentrated on visualizing the bleeding to stop and I began to work.
The wolves from the Black Moon Pack who could talk thanked me and I felt happy to help them. I went to the wolves from my pack and I saw that their wounds were not as severe as the previous wolves. I moved to the first boy, Josh, who was awake. I neared his injured leg and began to work. Once I was done I turned to the next bed when I felt him grab my hand.
"Don't think for one moment that you'll ever be needed like this again so don't feel happy that these wolves are thanking you. It's a message from Kegan." He said and tightened his hold on my wrist leaving red marks the shape of his fingers on my wrist.
I saw that many of the wolves had left to go back to their homes and only a few lingered that were being treated for minor injuries.
"I've never met a healer before." I heard a voice say behind me.
It was a woman who held out her hand for a handshake. "I'm Beth Winters. My husband Dr. David Winters are the pack doctors. I'm truly grateful that you were able to heal the ones back there. There wasn't much that I could do for them besides hope for their wolf healing to be enough."
"It's fine. I'm happy to help." I said and kept my eyes done. I could feel the fatigue in my body from healing the wolves and I needed to rest.
Beth must have seen this in my posture because she offered to take me to me to a spare room in the pack house. We passed a small room whose door was left open and I looked inside to see a boy laying there with a few machines hooked up to him. I had never seen a wolf whose vital were monitored so I asked Beth, hoping to get an answer.
"That is Alpha Cairstay's eldest son. He went through a lot tonight."
She didn't tell me anything else but I felt concerned about him and the anxious feeling had returned.
