Chapter 7: She made me...

The Healer's Mate

Chapter 7: She made me...

I saw him leaning towards me and my eyes shifted to look at his lips. His eyes were cast down and I could feel the tension between us growing as his lips neared my own. My breath was caught in my throat and my eyes had closed shut anticipating when Jayden would meet my lips with his own.

I felt his head fall forward and his shoulders hunch over. He rested his head on my right shoulder and I could feel his skin burning up. I wrapped my arms around him and laid him back on the bed. I brought my hand on his forehead and I could feel his temperature rising.

"You're getting a fever. Alpha Cairstay said to move you upstairs to your room. Are you comfortable here or are you feeling better enough to make it to your room?" I asked pouring him a glass of water.

"Give me a minute and I'll be fine to walk upstairs." he said and took the glass of water. After a few minutes he opened it eyes and grabbed a button up white shirt and pulled it over his arms and left the top few buttons undone. He got up and began walking to the door. I followed close behind not believing that he felt any better. Yet from what I had learned from my own experiences was that when your hurt it's best to be around a comfortable environment and for him it would be his room.

I walked close behind him as he neared the steps leading upstairs, I saw him sway backwards when his hands went out to grab on to the wall. I walked up to him, ducking under his arms and wrapping my arm around his waist while I clutched his hand in my own. He looked at me, which was when I saw his cheeks were changing to a redder tint and his fingers were becoming colder.

"Lean on me and I'll help you to your room."

He smiled and leaned closer to me I turned my head away from him concealing the blush that this small act had formed on my face. We made it upstairs and I saw Alpha Neal look up and move towards Jayden.

"It's okay, I've got him." I said and steered him to the top floor where all the bedrooms were located. I looked left and right in the hallway not knowing which door led to his room.

"Left and the last door on the right." I felt his lips slightly brush against my earlobe as he said this.

I blushed and felt a shiver run through my body.

Come on Layla. Focus!

I willed my feet to move and began guiding him to the door he had indicated. I pushed open the door and the first thing I noticed was how bare and empty his room looked. There wasn't any indication that showed this room belonged to someone. There weren't any posters on the walls, lose papers on the desk, or any lose clothing lying on the ground.

When my eyes landed on the massive bed I imagined how it would feel to wake up every morning in the arms of the man beside me. I felt Jayden move and noticed his eye lids were drooping down. I pulled back the black sheets on his bed and helped him lay down.

"Thank you Layla." he said and looked up at me. I felt a flutter inside when he said my name and loved how it sounded given his sleep laced and raspy voice. He grabbed my hand and before he fell asleep he said.

"We have a lot to talk about, my mate."

If I died and went to heaven right now I would fight my way back to him because at that second I never felt more love for someone than him.

I watched his sleeping face and wondered how someone so kind and gentle could conspire against his own pack. I remembered Alpha Neal's words and agreed that his decisions were clouded by his wolf. He was not the one at fault.

I returned downstairs after placing a glass or water and some pain killers on his night stand. I was called into Alpha Cairstay's office by someone from the Black Moon Pack. I knocked on the door and heard a muffled "come in".

Inside I saw Damon and Iris sitting on the couch placed against the wall and Alpha Cairstay remained seated behind his desk with Alpha Neal sitting in front of him.

"Come in Layla and close the door behind you." Alpha Cairstay said gesturing me forward. I did as I was told and walked inside and said beside Alpha Neal.

"I wanted to personally thank you for coming with your Father, Alpha Neal, in our time of need." Alpha Cairstay said to me. I bowed my head in respect and sank deeper into my seat feeling uncomfortable sitting around such great wolves.

"I called you and Alpha Neal into my office because I wanted to inform you both that the pack has recovered well from this hurdle and are falling back to their daily lives. For that I wanted to extend my gratitude and invite you and the wolves you have brought with you to come stay with our pack for the remainder of the two weeks."

"Thank you for your kindness Herold but I'm afraid I cannot stay. I have my own duties back in my pack and I feel the less time I spend avoiding them will be better. Also I feel that my men have stayed away from their mates long enough and are anxious to return home." Alpha Neal said.

"Alright I respect your decision however if Layla feels inclined to stay longer I'm sure we can keep her safe while you return to the White Thorn pack." Alpha Cairstay looked at me expecting an answer. I looked to Alpha Neal for help and saw him nod also asking for my decision.

"Alpha Neal, I'm sure Damon and I can entertain and keep Layla out of harm's way for two weeks." Iris said coming to stand beside my chair.

"If Layla wants to stay, by all means she can stay for the remainder of the two weeks." I looked at Alpha Neal and then thought about how Kegan would react. I feared his outburst from hearing this but I also couldn't leave without talking to Jayden.

"I would like to stay."

"To formally introduce you to the pack I have help a dinner here at the pack house. Please be ready at seven thirty." Alpha Cairstay and Alpha Neal shook hands and smiled.

I gulped already regretting my decision.

Iris had took me to an empty room on the second floor and helped me settle in. She told me about the pack and the area's best places to hang out. She had this air of power that surrounded her and like Alexis she held confidence and independence in her stance. But unlike Alexis she didn't realize the affect her power had on others and remained modest to her strength.

Alexis had joined us later in my room and they both helped me decide on what I should wear tonight to dinner.

"She needs to make a statement! The entire pack is going to be there!" Alexis yelled holding up a short navy blue dress.

"No, she needs to feel comfortable walking outside and wearing that will only making things worse." Iris said grabbing the dress from Alexis and started rummaging through my bag. She pulled out a pair of black jeans and paired it with a denim button up shirt I had packed.

"Here. Wearing your own clothes is best." she handed me the jeans and shirt and I saw Alexis huff and cross her arms.

I felt at ease with them and their rank as Alpha-to-be and Beta's daughter didn't cloud their thoughts. I changed into the clothes and walked back out seeing them laying on my bed staring up.

"Since the whole pack will be there, will Jayden also attend?" I asked saying his name aloud for the first time.

"I'm not sure but I hope he does. I feel for him because it was Charles calling the shots not him." Iris said coming up behind me in the mirror.

"Okay, sit down we are gonna fix your hair now, darling!" Alexis said coming up behind Iris chewing her imaginary gum.

They curled my hair and let the dark brown curls fall loosely around my shoulders. They pined a few strands back away from my face and stepped back to admire their work.

"You look amazing! And right on time as well!" Alexis said and we existed my room heading out to the backyard.

I looked down the hall and saw his door was still closed and the light was turned on. I guess he wasn't feeling well enough to come to dinner.

Jayden's POV

I could hear her sweet voice coming down from the hallway when I heard her ask about me. Hearing her say my name set my sense on high alert and all I wanted was to have her in my arms again. I had faked my dizzy spell downstairs to have her back in my arms. She looked so fragile when I first saw her downstairs and I could see a sadness in her eyes that most people possibly overlooked.

She was hiding something. And whatever it was, it had to be stopped.

Knowing my mate was constantly sad that the emotion had imprinted itself on her body and eyes angered me and if not for my condition I would have shifted right now in my room from the anger that still grew inside me. I had taken the pain killers and took a quick shower. I had a towel wrapped around my waist when I saw the pink lines on my chest. She was truly amazing. And the way her body reacted to mine when I whispered in her ear made me want her more.

I was told to attend dinner tonight but I felt I didn't deserve the pack's kindness or my mate. Feeling so confused and guilty I punched the wall beside the mirror. "Why did I have to find her now?!" I said through clenched teeth.

Why did someone as beautiful and talented as her have to be given a mate that could not shift, that had lost his wolf, and had conspired against his pack?

She deserved better. Someone who would stand by her every step of the way. Someone who she could relate to.

Not a broken man.

Wild lavender and vanilla invaded my senses and I knew she was standing in the hall. I could sense her and every time I was near her my senses were enhanced and I felt closer to a wolf than ever before.

She made me feel emotions I thought were lost to me. She made me want to protect her, care for her, hold her, and kiss her.

She made me love her.
