Blue Lark Guild, Dread Hideout
SAVAGE JAXSON
Savage was leaned over the counter, watching Dimurah serving, like a hungry predator. Trying to persuade her to let Adrea take over tending the counter. And come back to my tent.
âSavage Jack!â RedBayne roared from the doorway. Even before the door heâd ripped open slammed against the wall.
Yes? Savageâs blue gaze slid to him coolly. He turned, cocking his hip to give the mammoth man his ear.
âWe must talk!â
About what?
People were hissing breaths at the barbarianâs commanding tone with their King.
âAbout?â
I see no reason to move from where I am, this moment.
âNoâ somethinâ ye wanâ me saying out here!â RedBayne gestured around.
Savageâs unwavering gaze made others in the alehouse cringe.
âItâs bout yeâre lass!â He gestured to Dimurah.
What about her?
Savageâs eyes went sideways to see her. âIs there something I need to know?â He asked from the corner of his mouth.
âYea.â She paused wiping the counter to lean forward. âYeâre an ass!â
He gave her a dark glance as he lurched off the bar and uncrossed his legs to go greet the huge redhead.
âCome, barbarian.â He waved over his head as he aimed for a bench in the dark corner. The one commonly used for business.
Iâve no interest in bad news. Letâs get to the point.
âWhat is it?â
âKing Ocnomad.â
There was the faintest curl of Savageâs upper lip.
RedBayne glanced at the motion.
Unsurprising since he doesnât miss much.
âHeâs put a bounty on her.â
Savage leapt to his feet and drew RedByaneâs blade from the sheath, crossing his chest to hang near his left hip. Pressing the metal to the bigger manâs throat. Panting with rage. Take it back.
RedBayne slowly lifted his hands. Assessing Savage with alert blue eyes. âNoâ me fault, Brother. Iâm just hear ta warn ye.â
It isnât his fault. He drew no weapon on me.
âDammit!â Savage tossed the blade across the alehouse, sliding over the wood floor in a rare flare of temper.
âI understand.â RedBayne said in an even tone. âThatâs why I came ta warn ye.â
âHow much?â He leaned over RedBayne to whisper in a low voice.
â$1000 crowns.â
Theyâll tear this alehouse apart to get to her. He turned to Dimurah. Looking incredibly defeated as his chest heaved.
She met his stare, wide-eyed.
Everyone is. He realized.
âI came to help ye.â RedBayne said. âI can get her out of âere.â He whispered to Savageâs back.
âCan you give me one night?â Savage turned back to him.
RedBayne nodded. Lips tight. âIâll wait.â
âThank you.â Savage impulsively grabbed the top of RedBayneâs shoulder. Squeezing it firmly. âThank youâ¦â
âI know.â RedBayne lowered his head in deference. Standing, he walked around Savage to head out of Winter Haven.
âDimurah.â He waved as he strode past the counter. Heading for the backdoor.
The command had her leaping to obey, despite herself. She stepped through a swinging half door and headed through a few men parting to make a path. Once outside, she quickened to catch up to him crossing the floating deck to round the front of the structure.
âWhat is it?â She asked urgently as he rounded to face her.
Without a word he spun and grabbed her cheeks. Slamming his mouth to hers as she ran into him. Consuming her in a kiss that bordered on violent.
She reared back startled.
Probably because Iâve never touched her harshly.
âYou have to go.â He gave her a piercing look.
âNo.â She shook her head, brows lowering. âNoâ¦â
You have to.
âI wonât leave.â She read his face.
âDimurahâ¦â
I knew sheâd be difficult.
âNo, Jax. Iâve done everything you ever asked me to. You promised me youâd never make me go. You promised!â
âYouâre leaving. If I have to banish you, haul you out myself or order my men to drag you by your hair.â
âNo, I canât.â Her eyes instantly welled. âYouâll have to be the one to drag me by my hair.â
He flexed his shoulders. You know Iâd never do that.
âI know. Youâre scared.â
Itâs the only place youâve ever felt safe.
Iâm dethroning the Barter Queen. He realized sadly.
âThey put a bounty on your head. High enough to make every man in this Guild turn on you. I can stave off a lot. But not all of them.â His mouth whitened. The hard line of his jaw ticking.
âWhy would they put coin on my head? How do they even know?â
âThey donât know. Itâs a $1,000 crowns for the Barter Queen.â
âWhy for me?â
Because youâre an easier target.
âTo get to me.â
âWhy donât they put it on you?â
âThey have. Iâm worth 3,000 crowns but itâs a reward they canât collect dead. No one will come at me directly.â He shook his head sadly. âBut youâ¦they know youâre the quickest way to get to me.â
And youâre vulnerable.
âThen let me stay with you!â
I canât.
âItâs too risky. I wish I could.â
âCome away with me, Jax! Be with me. Let all your hate go. Let all these schemes be, and be with me!â He saw the plea in her teary blue eyes and fractured.
Donât ask me that.
âDimurahâ¦â He caught her in a tight embrace. Tucking her under his chin.
âWhat if something happens to you!â
âNothing will happen to me.â He reassured.
Iâll hunt them all down to bring you back.
âIâm safer with you.â
âYouâre not.â He breathed.
I wish you were.
âThen Iâm staying here.â
âIt wonât work.â He shook his head adamantly. Arms tightening around her as she sobbed against his studded tunic. His chin lifted and his body was so tight, his muscles ached. âYou canât stay here, Dimurah. You need to understand that your kingdom is going to crumble.â
âAnd what about yours!â She cried.
âYou are my kingdom.â He whispered against her forehead. Pressing a soft kiss against her hairline. âIf anything happened to you then this tenuous world Iâve built would fall and shatter along with me.â
