RHYERS
Elsabet paced her chamber furiously. Walking past the door repeatedly. Crimson skirts rustling. Rubbing her face ferociously.
Like sheâs trying to wash away something. Rhyers watched her from the doorway. Long black hair waving over his shoulders and framing a slim face. Light green eyes intent on the agitated valkyrieâs movements.
âElsabet?â His voice stopped her in her tracks.
She faced him. Blinking rapidly.
âDo you care to share?â
âOne conversation does not make us friends!â She was hissing with hostility.
Thereâs the valkyrie I knew before.
âNo, it doesnât.â He straightened. âBut weâve had a mite more than that. And I had reason to believe you were coming to learn I wasnât your enemy.â
âYouâre not my enemy.â She spat. Blinking thoughtfully as though surprised the words had come out of her mouth.
He waited for her to process.
âHe and Calisto were close friends.â
They were?
He told her that? I didnât even know that. Rhyersâ darkly lashed eyes widened.
âYou didnât know?â
âNo, I didnât. But that explains how she and Raese metâ¦Bastâs matchmakingâ¦I shouldâve guessed.â He shook his head Heavenward.
âNo. No!â She waved a finger at him. Arm rigid.
Whatâd I do?
âWhat?â
âDo not smile in fondness regarding him when Iâm prepared to set him afire. Itâll only antagonize me.â
Right.
âYes maâam.â He lowered his head in mock deference.
âRhyers!â
âThose who know me well sometimes call me, Rhye. I would like it if you did.â
âWell I wouldnât!â
He gave her a chiding look.
âYouâre right.â She resumed pacing. Head turning to keep him in view. âThis isnât your fault. But youâre the same creature as him.â
No, Iâm not.
âI like to think of myself as a singular being, thank you.â
âYou know well I wasnât being insulting. Itâs very clear when I am!â She said acidly.
Thatâs fair.
âElsabet. Calm down. What has you so mad about them being friends?â
âThey swam together. Unclothed.â
Oof. I wonder if Raese knows?
âI see why this would bother you.â
âDonât be patronizing!â She seethed.
âIâm not.â
She tossed him a couple rapid looks and saw the truth of his words.
She badly wants to battle. Probably physically.
âYouâre hurt.â He acknowledged.
âIâm enraged.â
âBecause youâre hurt.â
âYou sound like him.â She bared her teeth beneath a curling lip. Hair sizzling into coarse brown strands.
âWhy does it hurt you? I understand the jealousy over him swimming with a naked beautiful woman. But that was before you. So why are you so upset?â
âIâve never swam with him!â
Wait. Iâm not tracking. He shook his head as he focused on catching up.
âYou want to swim?â He asked slowly.
âWith him.â She nodded. Skirts swishing. She walked faster.
How has she not worn through that floor?
How long has she been up here doing this?
How much longer is she going to? That thought made him grimace. Iâm not certain she needs sleep.
âIâve never interacted with him as a free woman. Iâve had the choice of speaking with him of my own volition stolen from me!â
âIâve asked him to free you.â He said quietly.
âSo has yourâ¦Captain!â She tossed an arm. âBut he refuses! Because it amuses him to keep me!â
âI donât think thatâs why.â
âHow would I know!â She flailed her arms in an exaggerated shrug. âEverything is his terms!â
Rhyers was struggling to follow.
âIâve never been able to play with him âlike a childâ.â
Like a child? That doesnât sound like her.
Whereâd she get those words?
Bast? Did he give her that ammo? No. Heâs not that stupid.
âI donât even know what itâs like to share a glass of wine with him purely because I wish to!â
Rhyers frowned. She has a point.
How many years has she been here now?
Over two decades?
âAnd he lays with me.â
What? He does? Rhyers was aware his jaw was slack with shock.
Theyâve been together? He didnât tell me that. He felt a pang of pride for Bast finally accomplishing the feat. Why didnât he tell me?
Because Iâd have found him a fine bottle of sherry and toasted him. And sheâd have likely heardâ¦He winced at that thought.
âWhat is his game, Rhye?â
âI donât think he plays games with you, Elsabet.â
âThen why lay with me then leave to find mistresses?â
What? He wouldnât!
Rhyersâ brow knitted. âI donât think heâd do that.â
âThen where does he go?â
âYou know he goes to help us!â Rhyers stiffened. Feeling that old protective fury mounting. âYouâre looking for reasons to keep your walls up. Donât be looking to me to feed them!â He snarled.
âAh!â She tossed her arms in a frustrated shriek.
