Aboard the FireStar, Peril Sea
SAVAGE JAXSON
Iâm Taking her to Sanctuary Islandâ¦One Way or Another
âJax!â Dimurah railed from the FireStarâs hold.
RedBayneâs pale blue eyes flared with annoyance. âAre you going to let her out?â
Savage was standing at the bow staring across the Peril Sea knowing theyâd soon be traversing into the Sea of Souls. A bleak, dark water where it wasnât at all uncommon to find bodies floating.
People whoâd been cast, or cast themselves from the Sourthern Vale Scarps. Savageâs profile was as still and unreadable as always.
âNo.â
âWhyever not?â RedBayneâs voice rose and he waved his arms in agitation.
Because I donât wish to.
âWhereâd you get this ship?â He queried instead.
âBorrowed it.â
Stole it?
âDoes the owner know?â
RedBayneâs brow lifted. âOf course, he does. If he didnât, heâd be swimming the Peril after us to brawl with me.â
Determined man. Sounds likable.
âGoodâ¦â Savage commented.
âNow are you going to answer?â
Not willingly.
âBecause sheâll only want to battle.â He said simply.
And I canât bear to see the accusing look on her face.
âNah!â RedBayne scoffed. âAfter ye chained âer up and loaded âer aboard Delcourt and then this ship witâ a bag over âer head? Surely noâ! She shoulâ see it as a gift!â
Savageâs blue eyes flicked sideways. It was necessary.
âJax! You blonde devil youâre going to rot! Let me out of here! Face me like a man!â She shrieked from the hold.
The other sailors were skittering around the deck. Cringing every time she shouted. Their gazes averting to watch Savage warily. Well aware the King of Assassins was onboard their boat.
âYe dunnoâ wanna at leasâ tell âer weâre headinâ to Sanctuary Isle?â
âNot particularly.â
âWhaâ is yer aim exactly?â RedBayne asked.
This is why I hate conversation.
âTo keep her safe.â
âWhy did Ocnomad wanâ âer dead?â
âHe doesnât. He tired of trying to kill me.â
Unsuccessfully.
âNo one is foolish enough ta come after ye!â
âExactly.â
Thatâs why theyâre after her.
RedBayne waited impatiently for the rest of an explanation.
Savage relented. âHe knew he could get to me through her.â
âWhy does âe âave such a hard spot for ye?â
Savage shot him a warning look.
âOohâ¦â RedBayne was intrigued.
âHe knew coming after her would drive me out of my Fortress. He needs the ability to get to me with the Grier Guard.â
âIt has.â RedBayne pointed out.
Yes. Iâm aware.
âOnce sheâs safely on Sanctuary Island. Iâm going after him.â Savage said in a dangerous tone.
King Ocnomad.
âYouâve already ripped open the underbelly of Grier by overtaking the Traderâs Market and all the commerce it provides.â
Yes, I have.
âNow Iâm going to cut off its head.â
âJax!â It was a prolonged shout. âIâm going to claw your face off!â Dimurah sounded fit to exact her threat.
âI think she means that.â RedBayne said dully.
âSheâll try.â
RedBayne sent him a nervous look.
No, Iâm not going to hurt her. Why does everyone think Iâd hurt her?
She was shrieking wildly now. Chains rattling.
She may tear this ship apart. Savage inwardly groaned. Sheâs not going to stop.

They entered the bleak icy waters of the Sea of Souls. The fog hovered over the water as far as the eye could see. Wobbling upward in curling gray fingers.
Savage turned and ordered the sails adjusted. Slowing the ship.
There was a thunk and a slight jostle before a scraping along the starboard side.
âGot a floater!â A sailor called. Leaning over the rail. To watch the greenish bloated figure bobbing in the water. Loose bits of skin peeling free to coat the hazy water.
âSavage Jack!â Dimurah shouted. âAre we in the Sea of Souls? Youâre not dumping me on Sanctuary Island! Youâre not!â
I absolutely am. Savage rotated on his heel and lowered into the dark stairs of the hold. Poking his head below to see her sparking blue eyes glittering in the dim light.
She was straining the chain, its length pulled tight.
âYou said I wouldnât get you out of the Blue Lark eitherâ¦â
Yet I did.
âYou bound me and tossed me over Delcourt you filthy Whoreson!â She rained a shower of curses down on him.
Still angry apparently.
âDimurah itâs-â
âNo, itâs not!â She cut him off. Knowing him well enough to know where he was going.
Better for you. He finished inwardly.
âIâm trying to-â
âYouâre failing!â
Save youâ¦
There was another bump on the side of the ship.
âFloater!â
Thank God.
âI need to go deal with that.â Savage pointed over his shoulder.
Urgently needing away from this floundering conversation.
âJax, donât you dare leave! You wouldnât-â The chains clanged as she rattled them ferociously.
He was already heading up the narrow stairs. âI am.â
Leaving this hold before sheâs done talking.
As quickly as possible.
