Harridan Hamlet, Paladines
TEVERIUS
Teverius was setting up a country house in the Harridan Hamlet.
âYou look stressed.â Rhyers commented. âMore than usual.â
Tev grimaced.
âWhat is it?â Rhyers persisted.
âI am going to have to cut my hair.â He said forlornly. Pacing the parlor of the new country house.
âOhâ¦You poor devil.â Rhyers feigned a pout. âI feel awful for you. I can imagine itâd be nearly as excruciating as having to wear a huge frumpy wig over your glorious hair, every single day of your fantastic immortal life.â
Tev winced. âOh, the trials of being a tracker.â
âThey call it a âspyâ in this day and age.â Rhyers corrected dryly. âAnyway, what did you call me here to do?â
âI thought perhaps I may need you in my current endeavor.â
âWho are you hunting?â Rhyersâ face was instantly serious.
âRaese.â
âRaese?â Rhyersâ leapt to his feet and knocked over the decanter on the table between them. âYou think heâs here?â
âSebastian does.â
âBast?â Rhyers began pacing as agitatedly as Tev. âHeâs never wrong. How does he know?â
âHe said he heard him.â
âAfter all this time? He is still alive? Why have we not seen him? Why hasnât he rejoined us?â
âIf I knew all that, I would not be looking for him.â Tev said dryly, glaring at the other man.
âIt makes no sense.â Rhyers lost his usual cool.
âIâm going to find him.â
âBast did not?â
âHe said he heard Raese call to him, but it was only once. The string was broken so Bast couldnât track his location. But he followed it here to Harridan Hamlet, Paladines.â
âDo you know where? Maybe I could find a track!â
âIt has been months.â Tev admitted. Ashamed he had not come sooner.
âMonths? Why?â
âAnd Bast did not say where he lost the string at.â Tev changed the subject. Unwilling to explain he had been reluctant to leave the beautiful little snippet back in the Netherlands.
Serdephe. His heart twisted with pain at just the thought of her name. It was indescribable how much he missed her already.
âWell, all you need do is send me word if you need my help. Now that I know, I will assure I am available to respond instantly.â
âThank you.â Tev nodded. âI hoped you would say that.â
âWhere will you start?â
âI thought Iâd take a page from your book and start integrating here to see if I can find Raese.â
âBest find him before Radix doesâ¦If he hasnât alreadyâ¦â Rhyersâ words made Tevâs stomach sink in terror.
I hadnât even considered that prospect.
Radix has already turned one of us warlord. What if there has been more?
âWe would never see Raese coming.â Rhyers murmured thoughtfully as if reading Tevâs thoughts.
Tev realized at that moment the urgency of finding their friend.
âDo you wish to work as partners?â Rhyers offered.
Tev tightened his lips and shook his head adamantly. âNo, Brother. This is something I must do alone.â
Rhyers eyed Teverius a long while. His light green eyes assessing Tev. At length he nodded slowly.
âI think I understand.â
âI appreciate that.â
