Chapter 36
BOUNDLESS | GXG
Riley stood about half a meter away from Vivian, her pulse quickening as Vivian turned sharply, crossing her arms as she walked toward her.
âIâm giving you both a chance, Riley,â Vivian began, her voice firm, âbut once my husband, Siennaâs father, finds out about the two of you⦠I donât know what will happen.â Her gaze bore into Riley, carrying a weight of both warning and reluctant approval.
Riley held Vivianâs intense gaze. âThank you, Maâam,â she said, bowing her head respectfully.
âOh dear, donât thank me yet,â Vivian replied, her tone edged with skepticism. âIâm still not convinced this relationship of yours can work. But if itâs what my daughter wants, Iâm giving her my approvalâreluctantly.â
Vivian took a step back, her expression hardening. âBut remember, this kind of relationship rarely survives, especially when the people around you wonât agree.â
With that, Vivian turned and walked to her car, pausing for a moment to glance back at Riley. She waved dismissively, signaling for Riley to return inside. âIâm leaving now. Go on, get back inside.â
Riley nodded, bowing once more. âHave a safe trip, Maâam.â
As Vivian drove away, Riley let out a deep breath, a small smile tugging at her lips. She headed back toward her unit, but her steps faltered as she reached her door, her gaze drifting to Siennaâs. After a brief hesitation, she sighed and walked over, raising her hand to knock.
âRileâ¦â Siennaâs voice, thick with emotion, came from behind. Riley turned quickly, her heart sinking as she saw Sienna standing there, her eyes red and swollen from tears.
âSien,â Riley whispered, closing the distance between them in an instant. She wrapped her arms tightly around Sienna, pulling her close as Sienna buried her face in Rileyâs shoulder. Gently, Riley stroked her hair, offering comfort in the quiet warmth of the embrace.
Sienna sobbed softly, her grip tightening around Riley, as if holding on for dear life. Without breaking the hug, Riley guided her inside, closing the door behind them and leaning back against it. She pressed soft kisses to the top of Siennaâs head, her voice low and soothing. âWhatâs wrong, love?â
Sienna shook her head, saying nothing, but her arms tightened around Riley, clinging to her as the tears continued to flow.
Riley sighed softly, her breath warm against Siennaâs hair. "Everything's fine, donât worry," she whispered, her voice calm and reassuring as she continued to gently stroke Siennaâs hair. The rhythm of her touch was steady, like a quiet promise that she was there to stay, no matter what.
Sienna sniffled, her tears slowly subsiding, though she still clung tightly to Riley. The weight of her worries seemed to lessen, if only slightly, under the comfort of Rileyâs embrace.
"Iâve got you," Riley murmured, her fingers weaving through Siennaâs hair, grounding her in the moment. "Iâm here."
Sienna hugged her knees, leaning against the headboard of Rileyâs bed. She buried her face in her arms, remaining still. Riley glanced over and sighed, towel in hand, as she finished drying her hair after her shower. Sitting beside Sienna, she gently poked her in the waist.
Sienna lifted her head slightly and turned to face Riley, her red, swollen eyes meeting hers. âI talked to your mom,â Riley said, still using the towel to dry her damp hair.
Sienna sat up straighter, a flash of anxiety crossing her face. âWhat? What did she say? Did sheâdid she tell you to break up with me? Are you going toââ
Before Sienna could finish, Riley leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to her lips, stopping her mid-sentence. âRelax, love,â Riley whispered with a quiet laugh, leaning back against the headboard, arms crossed and legs stretched out. âItâs not that.â
She sighed before adding, âJust like I suspected, your parents still believe Harriet is responsible for Sophieâs death.â
Sienna bit her lip, fidgeting with her fingers. âBut I told her, Harriet isnât a criminal,â Riley continued. âWe shouldnât be judged for what happened between Harriet and Sophie. I made it clear that, at the very least, I want them to accept our relationship and not stand in the way.â
Sienna leaned her head on Rileyâs shoulder. âWhat did she say?â she asked quietly.
Riley wrapped an arm around Siennaâs waist, pulling her closer. âThat weâre just kids,â she said with a bitter chuckle. âParents always say that, donât they? Itâs their way of saying we donât understand how the world works.â
Sienna toyed with Rileyâs fingers. âI told her she should be the one to understand you, to accept youânot judge you for loving me. Not for loving another girl.â
Sienna let out a heavy sigh. âShe mustâve been furious.â
Riley placed a gentle kiss on Siennaâs forehead. âShe told me something else, though.â
Sienna pulled back slightly, her curiosity piqued. âWhat? Donât tell me she gave you some kind of ultimatumââ
âNo, nothing like that,â Riley interrupted. âShe said sheâs giving us her approval, but only because itâs what you want. Even then, sheâs still reluctant. She doesnât think this kind of relationshipâusâcan last.â
Sienna stared at Riley in disbelief. âShe actually said that?â
âYep. Loud and clear,â Riley replied, nodding.
âApproval?â Sienna scoffed, shaking her head. âWhat the hell is going on?â
Riley laughed softly. âMaybe itâs because Iâm too cute to resist. Thatâs probably why she agreed.â
Sienna couldnât help but smile at Rileyâs playful tone, though she was still processing everything. She leaned in closer, resting her head on Rileyâs shoulder. âI canât believe she actually gave approval. Even if itâs reluctantâ¦â
Riley shrugged, still holding Sienna close. âItâs not a full victory, but itâs a start. Sheâs giving us a chance, even if sheâs skeptical. Honestly, I wasnât expecting her to budge at all.â
Sienna sighed, fidgeting with Rileyâs fingers. âIt feels... surreal. After everything thatâs happened with Sophie, I didnât think sheâd ever let us be together. She still thinks Harrietâs to blame. I donât know how Iâm supposed to get past that.â
Riley looked down at Sienna, her expression softening. âWeâll get through it, Sien. I told your mom the truthâHarriet isnât a criminal, and weâre not responsible for the choices they made in the past. What matters is now, and I love you. Thatâs what I told her.â
Sienna smiled faintly, though her thoughts were still a whirlwind. âDo you really think sheâll leave us alone?â
Riley chuckled, pressing a kiss to Siennaâs forehead. âWell, letâs not get ahead of ourselves. She might keep an eye on us, but for now, we have her reluctant approval. Thatâs better than nothing.â
Sienna sighed again, her fingers still tracing the lines of Rileyâs hand. âItâs just⦠I donât want to spend my life fighting to justify loving you.â
Riley tilted her head to meet Siennaâs gaze, her expression turning serious. âWe donât need to justify it to anyone. We love each otherâthatâs all that matters. Your momâs doubts donât change how I feel about you.â
Siennaâs heart softened at Rileyâs words, and she leaned in to kiss her softly. âYouâre right. Weâll make this work, no matter what.â
Riley smiled against Siennaâs lips. âThatâs the spirit. And donât worry, Iâll charm your mom into full approval eventually. Just give me time.â
Sienna laughed, shaking her head. âYou really think you can charm her?â
Riley grinned. âIâm cute, remember? Thatâs half the battle won.â
