Chapter 20
The Unwanted Wolf
Mark, what are you doing?â I shouted. I was shocked to see Mark acting so aggressively. He had always been so gentle and so caring with all of his actions, but Jori brought out something different in him. I wondered if this was the old Mark that Jori had told me about.
âHeâs saying you wonât leave with me,â Mark snarled. âHeâs acting like you belong to him.â
I ran over to Mark and placed my hand on his shoulder. âPlease put him down.â
âShe doesnât want you to hurt me because she might pick me after all.â Jori smirked, despite the position Mark held him in.
Mark let out a growl and slammed Jori against the wall again. âStop trying to make decisions for her.â
âIâd say the same thing to you,â Jori returned.
I gripped Markâs arm harder, terrified. âJori! Thatâs not helping. Mark, please put him down.â
Scythe moved to Mark and grabbed his other arm. âAlpha, we donât want to cause any issues in another alphaâs packhouse. Please listen to Adira.â
Mark g*****d in frustration. Finally, he released Jori, who fell to the ground. Percy was instantly by Joriâs side, helping Jori to his feet.
Mark grabbed my wrist and tried to pull me out the door. âLetâs go.â
I pulled my arm out of Markâs grip. âNo.â
Mark stopped and looked at me surprised. âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean you donât own me, and you canât just drag me around. You need to stop to think about what I want.â My voice cracked as I scolded Mark. I was beyond upset with his behavior.
Mark froze, his eyes wide. He swallowed hard. âDo you want Jori?â
I sighed and my shoulders dropped. It killed me seeing Mark look so defeated. âI want to stop thinking about this for just a moment. Someone is trying to kill me, and I canât handle you two fighting over me right now.â Tears threatened to spill out of my eyes.
Jori and Mark both looked at me with sheepish looks. They had forgotten about the reason I came here in the first place.
âYouâre right,â Mark finally said. âWe should make sure you are safe before pressuring you into anything.â
âYou would be safe in this packhouse,â Jori suggested. âThere are wolves everywhere, and we always have fighters on patrol.â
âI can keep her safe,â Mark instantly said.
âI will stay here on one condition,â I quickly said before Mark and Jori could get into it again. âMark, Scythe, and Rie will stay here as well.â I turned to Mark. âI know you donât like this, but Jori has a point. If we are going to stay here for a little longer, wouldnât it be safer to be surrounded by other wolves?â
Markâs jaw was tense. He glanced over to Jori. âI will agree to these terms if you do.â
Joriâs eyes narrowed. âI think I can handle your presence for a few days, but Adira will have her own room. Iâm not going to let go of her without a fight.â
âI wonât either,â Mark returned. âShouldnât it be Adiraâs decision where she sleeps?â
Jor smirked. âYou better be careful with what you say.â
âI think itâs best to be in my own room for now. Iâm not even going to think about making a decision between the two of you until my life is safe, and I want you both to respect that,â I said.
âSpeaking of keeping you safe,â Daniel said, walking down the stairs and joining us all. âIâm a little worried there might be another attack on your life tomorrow.â
âWhy tomorrow?â Mark asked.
âItâs Adiraâs twenty-first birthday,â Daniel said flatly. âIf she is in fact part sorcerer, supposedly she will come into her full powers on her twenty-first birthday. Think about it for a moment. For almost five years no one has bothered Adira, and then a week before her birthday, there are suddenly multiple attempts on her life. I donât believe in coincidences.â
âYou didnât mention this before,â I said, looking up at Daniel.
âI thought about it after our conversation,â Daniel said.
âWait, tomorrow is your birthday?â Scythe asked. âI didnât know that. We need to make sure you celebrate.â
I hadnât mentioned my birthday to any of them deliberately. Celebrating my birthday usually brought back bad memories, so I stopped celebrating it a while ago. âI donât really feel like celebrating.â
âYou should celebrate,â Scythe insisted. âI know a lot is going on, Adira, but that doesnât mean you shouldnât get to celebrate yourself.â
âItâs settled then,â Jori said. âWe will have a party for Adira here tomorrow.â
âOh goodie!â Scythe clapped his hands in excitement.
âIf Daniel thinks someone will attack Adira tomorrow, donât you think it would be better to put off celebrating?â Mark said. He turned to me. âItâs not that I donât want to celebrate you, Adira. I think you deserve the best. I just donât want to put you in any unnecessary risk.â
âI agree with you,â I said. âI donât think we should celebrate.â
Jori waved his hand. âNonsense. We will have a party tomorrow. As long as itâs in the pack house, youâll be safe.â
I bit my tongue, feeling that it would be pointless to argue against them.
âThereâs so much to plan for,â Scythe said, his mood practically glowing. I smiled at him. It was good seeing him as his more chirpy self. âRie, can you handle getting Adira a dress?â
âSure, we can go shopping,â Rie said.
âMake sure to bring an escort with you,â Mark said. âI donât want you guys going alone.â
âI have an escort you can bring with you,â Jori offered.
I waved my hands. âNo, no, I donât need a new outfit. Really guys, we donât have to do anything fancy.â
âWe should probably go shopping tonight,â Rie said. âIt would probably be safer than going tomorrow if Danielâs theory is correct.
âExcellent. I can work on decorations,â Scythe offered. âWe will need to figure out food as well.â
âPercy will help you with that stuff,â Jori said.
Scythe paused and looked at Percy. Percy was looking at Jori with wide eyes, avoiding Scytheâs gaze. I could feel Scytheâs pain as he looked at his distant mate. His eyes were wanting and lonely, and all he wanted was to be near his mate and hold him tightly. I wondered if Jori knew they were estranged mates or if Percy had kept it a secret from everyone, just like Scythe.
âIs that really necessary?â Percy asked.
âIâm not going to have their pack plan this party on their own. I want you to be involved.â Joriâs alpha voice came out, and there was no arguing with that.
âLetâs go,â Percy muttered, clearly unhappy. He walked away with Scythe following behind them. I hoped those two would be okay together.
âWe should get going soon,â Rie suggested. âItâs already dark, and we donât want to be out too late.â
âI will have someone meet you outside,â Jori said. âBring her back safe.â
âThat has always been the plan,â Rie sassed. She gave a dirty look to Jori. Then she turned to me. âAre you ready?â
âCan I have a moment before we go?â I asked.
I found myself looking back at Mark, and there was a deep pain in them. This wasnât easy for me, but it made me realize that this couldnât be easy on him either. He was looking back at me, and even though we were only a few feet apart, it felt like miles. It was wild to imagine that just twenty-four hours prior I was resting peacefully in his arms. There was a longing inside of me for his touch and his warmth. The safety he made me feel.
But I was starting to even question that.
Markâs aggressive behavior earlier was shocking and seemed so unlike what I knew about him. Joriâs explanation on top of that showed me there was a side of Mark I didnât know. I wasnât sure if it was that feeling of uncertainty or the pull towards Jori that stopped me from approaching Mark in that moment.
âI will see you later, Adira. Let me know when you are back safely,â Jori said. âI will go make sure all of your rooms are prepared.â Jori left the room with Daniel following behind him.
Rie got the hint as well and said, âIâll be waiting outside for you.â When she was gone, it was just Mark and myself left in the room.
âMark, Iâm so sorry for all of this. I didnât want to hurt you. I wish I could give you the answer you want to hear from me, but it wouldnât be fair to myself if I did.â I felt so torn and confused by everything, but I didnât want to hurt him ever.
âNo, Iâm sorry. I lost sight of whatâs important: your safety and your happiness. I just canât stand the thought of him taking you from me, too.â Markâs voice was soft and defeated. âBut I need to stop thinking about what I want.â
I looked back at him. âYou deserve happiness too.â
âYou should join the others. They are waiting for you.â Mark forced a smile and walked away, leaving me feeling empty and alone.
