It was an early Monday morning when Macy woke up to the sound of her phone ringing. 6AM to be exact. How long has it been since someone contacted her in the wee hours of the morning? Since Vegas, her life has turned around. People from the hospital has not bothered her aside from Todds' random phone calls here and there.
It was probably work, Macy thought. So, she pickep up her phone. When she checked the caller ID, she was surprised to see that it says O'Crowne which means, it was Oliver calling.
What the heck?! Did he finally realized that being married to her was wrong? Did he finally realized that they should stop playing the happy married couple? There was no other reason for someone, especially a busy business man to call so early in the morning. Did he finally realized over night that he wanted his freedom of being single and he would like a divorce?! That should be it.
With a furrowed brow, Macy picked up the phone.
Macy: hello?
O'Crowne: good morning baby! Surprised to hear you awake.
Macy: it is rather really early. Did you finally want to divorce?
Macy heard a laugh.
Macy: come on! There's no other reason why someone like you would call me early just for nothing.
O'Crowne: hmmm... someone like me... What is that suppose to mean? That's interesting.
Macy: come on. I really want to go back to sleep... what do you really want? In case you want to take me for a walk this early, it would be a NO for me.
O'crowne: can you have lunch with me today? I will order some takeaway and we can eat at my office.
Macy: whoah. Calm your horses! Didn't we just saw each other less than 10 hours ago?
O'Crowne: I know. I just thought that we should you know, see each other more before you get back to work.
Macy: fine...
O'Crowne: wow, really?
Macy: yeah. But I will have to go to my apartment first. I desperately need to pick up my car.
O'Crowne: how about I arranged someone to pick you up then we have lunch... then I'll drive you to your apartment so you could pick up your car?
Macy: okay... sounds like a plan.
O'Crowne: see you later, baby...
Macy said goodbye and she ended the call.
She tried to go back to sleep but she couldn't. She was tossing and turning so she decided to get up and make herself a nice cup of coffee.
She tied her hair into a ponytail then she walked to the kitchen.
She found her dad sitting on one of the bar stools in the kitchen island, reading, probably today's paper. She hasn't spoken to him since the incident in Vegas. She was too scared to get scolded. Her dad wasn't the dad-daughter-speaking type. But when he spoke, it always was like everything was business. But one thing they have in common is that they both love a good coffee.
"Errhmm... good morning dad." She greeted him. He only looked at her for a few seconds then he went back to reading his paper.
"I'm making coffee, would you like one?" She asked.
"Long black for me honey." He finally answered.
She turned the coffee machine on and then started grinding some coffee beans. The only sound on the background was the whirring sound of the coffee grinder. Aside from that, it was all silence.
Once she was happy with the amount of ground coffee, she then put it in the portafilter. Then she gently tapped the handle of the portafilter to make sure that she has enough ground coffee. Then using the tamper, she tamped the ground coffee beans to get rid of any air pockets. Then she wiped the head of the portafilter.
Lastly, she inserted the portafilter into the group head and tada! She now has a fresh brewed coffee.
She made her dad's coffee first then she did the whole procedure again to brew coffee for herself then she frothed some milk. And by adding a shot of butterscotch syrup and the milk she frothed, She made herself a butterscotch latte.
"Here's your coffee dad." She handed him the coffee mug.
"Thank you, honey." He answered.
Macy opted to stay standing on the opposite side of the island bench. She sipped her coffee when her dad raised his face and said something.
"I don't want you to get divorced." He firmly said.
"Errm.." was all Macy could muster.
"I have always let you do what you liked all your life. I never enforced any rules. But now that you are in this situation, I don't want you to make any drastic decision and that includes getting divorced. We have a business that we need to look after. I don't want to deal with any more issues." Her dad added.
"I'm sorry for getting into this mess dad. I promise I won't anymore get myself into trouble." Macy answered her dad.
As much as she wanted to think of it as his way of telling her that he cared, she can't deny the fact that the business is always his top priority. And that hurt her.
It is one of the many reasons why she opted to not have anything to do with her dad's company. She was his daughter but she was not really his priority.
Oliver's POV
I was early at the office. It's not that I am not always early but I made a mental note to try and finish early today because I have invited Macy for lunch at the office. Who does takeaway lunch at their office? I don't know! But it was the only excuse I could think of when I called her earlier this morning.
To be honest, I don't know what got into me. I didn't plan to call her but somehow I ended up dialing her number.
Anyways, it was too late to cancel. So I started doing my job. I attended a meeting with the finance team. I signed whatever needs to be signed.
I checked my wristwatch it was only 10:30 in the morning. I still had a few more hours to spare so I turned my laptop on. I was going to check the schedule of all the shipping contracts that we had for the month when I heard a beep.
1 message received.
Aaaaaawife: rain check for the lunch. ð§
And yes that's what I named her on the contacts of my phone. I did this so she was the first one and I won't have to scroll. The first letter of her name is M so if I used Macy as her contact name, she would be hard to find. I have so many contacts and I also hate speed dials. They only work on phone calls. Not with text messages.
I felt a little disappointed, it's wierd.
I was going to type my reply when I received another message notification.
1 message received.
Aaaaaawife: but on that note, I can do late lunch. Something just came up. ð
I smiled at the prayer emoji. I didn't realized that John, my secretary, was already in front of me.
"You look rather happy today sir." John said to me.
"I'm always happy John. What do you mean?" I smiled and answered back.
John left a folder in my table. And with a nod, he left.
So my attention went back to writing a reply to Macy's messages when I received another message notification.
1 message received.
Aaaaaawife: ððð
I honestly don't know what the prayer emoji was all about. But I didn't realized until now that three prayer emojis could be this funny. For no apparent reason!
So I wrote my reply.
Me: Alright late lunch it is, but your treat. ð
Macy's POV
I was about to get ready to see Oliver when my phone rang. This time, it was work. It was Dr. Avery wanting to ask for my opinion. Me and Dr. Avery are both junior surgeons and most of the time, we consult with each other. Especially if we are unsure with our own judgement.
Our job deals with life and death so it's always a must that our decisions and judgements are a hundred and one percent.
I couldn't really refuse Dr. Avery's request so I texted Oliver to cancel our lunch.
I was going to totally cancel it but my conscience kept telling me that he made the effort and we agreed to work things out. Whatever it is.
So I ended up sending a follow up text telling him that I could do late lunch which he agreed.
I called for a taxi and went to my apartment to pick up my car first.
When I arrived at my apartment, the whole area was cold and sad. I made a mental note to come back and clean the whole apartment before I move back and started working again.
I went to the parking level and I checked my mini cooper. It was running low on gas so I drove to the nearest gas station first then went straight to the hospital.
It was awkward meeting everyone at work. But thank god for Todds, she managed to set the atmosphere like it was before, like things never changed. Everyone ended up doing the same thing. But to be honest, I am the same Macy that they have worked with. I never changed.
We finished discussing the CT MRI brain scan at around quarter to 2 in the afternoon. I quickly said my goodbye and told everyone I was going to bounce.
Before starting the engine of my car I called Oliver. Like it was a normal chore I'm used to do.
Oliver: hi!
Macy: i hope you're still hungry?
Oliver: of course. I'm patiently waiting.
Oliver emphasizing the word waiting.
Macy: japanese or korean?
Oliver: wow we don't want to cause a war.
Macy chuckled.
Macy: come on! Answer quick I am ordering through my phone app. I need an answer, like, right now?!
Oliver: whatever you feel like getting. I will eat anything baby.
Macy: okay. I'll call when I'm there.
The call ended. I then ordered the food through a phone app. And of course, I ordered my favourite!
Japanese.
By the time I arrived at the restaurant I only waited for 3 mins until the food was ready. As I am a regular in this Japanese takeaway, they would give little extras every time I ordered.
I ordered chicken katsu bento and pork tonkasu donburi. I also ordered two different kinds of fried dumplings. And as expected, the restaurant added my favourite vegetable tempura for free!
I thanked the restaurant owner for personally delivering the foods I ordered at the parking lot where I was. Everything is cashless these days. So when ordering through an app you pay it through the app as well and same with the tip. The restaurant owner thanked me for the tip.
I was about to start my car when I remembered that I won't be able to park at Oliver's building. Because just like in dad's company, every employee had to have a key card to enter the car park. And visiting usually is by appointment so they are given visitor's pass so they could use the parking.
I texted Oliver.
Macy: I'm 3 minutes away. But I will only be able to park at the front of your building and it's only usually 15mins parking.
I didn't wait for him to reply. I drove to Oliver's office and I was surprised to see him standing at the curb side just at the front of his building.
I parked my car and I said hi. And before I could say anything else, he opened the backseat of my car and picked up the food that I brought for our late lunch. I also noticed him putting a temporary sticker on the windshield of my car which means I can park my car at the curb side for more than 15mins.
I got out of the driver seat. It's probably afternoon tea for the employees as there were people coming out of the building and there were people sitting on the sitting areas having coffee and chatting.
I was closing the door of the driver seat when Oliver pulled me using his free arm and kissed me. I honestly was not prepared for that.
Wtf what was that!? I was going to say something but people were looking. I didn't want to embarrass myself more.
Oliver's arm was around my shoulder when he led me to the entry of the building. I followed his lead. We reached the elevator then he had let go of me and he pressed the arrow going up. We only waited for a few seconds when I heard the ding. The elevator opened. There were 2 people who quickly got out out of the elevator when they saw Oliver.
Oliver then motioned his hand for me to enter the elevator first. And I did just that. He followed me then he pressed the floor number. Then the elevator door closed.
Then the awkward silence...
