Chapter 13: Chapter 13

The Moment to FightWords: 9753

Kiera

I woke with a start in a cold sweat after having a nightmare about demons. Sitting up, I breathed heavy and wiped the sweat off my forehead.

I scrambled out of my bed when I heard the loud noises of chatter drifting down the hall from the cafeteria. I was late for breakfast again.

I quickly threw on the standard black suit that all of us had and dashed out into the hallway.

I walked into the cafe to see Declan gripping the front of Trev's suit and holding him a couple inches off the ground. I was too far away to hear what was being said between the two of them, but by their angry expressions I knew it couldn't be good.

I got so angry that all rational thought left me. I raised my arms above my head and swiped them back down.

A huge gust of wind blew right to the two idiots and knocked them apart. Declan crashed into the banquet table with all the food that no one got up to eat yet. He broke the table and the food covered him from head to toe. Trev flew in the opposite direction and slammed into the wall before crumpling to the ground.

I stood there shaking and looked around the room. A stunned silence descended upon the room and what felt like a million pairs of eyes landed on me.

Great. Way to not draw attention to myself. I just freaking used the wind power Declan had used on me the morning of The Trials Ceremony.

Declan and Trev mimicked all of the entrants' expressions and stared dumbly at me.

Clenching my fists, I turned my back on them all and ran out of the cafeteria. I didn't stop running until I found the glass doors leading to the backyard.

I yanked the door open and threw myself outside. This wasn't good. Everyone clearly saw what I just did. To them, I had just been a weak human. Now they saw what I could really do.

I climbed up the nearest tree and sat up on the highest branch. Wanting to see if I could make the wind come again, I raised my arms and repeated the action I had done in the cafeteria.

Nothing happened. Not even a small current blew by.

Strange.

I should have been able to do it. I kept repeating the movements over and over.

With a bang, the glass doors shattered when two bodies shoved through them.

Almost immediately, an even bigger gust of wind than I had made in the cafeteria blew out of my outstretched arms and once again flung Declan and Trev like rag dolls.

Slowly climbing to their feet, they looked directly at me and started talking at the same time.

"You're in deep shit this ti-"

"You're a badass, Kie-"

I smirked when Trev called me a badass, but it earned him a solid punch to the jaw from Declan. Not expecting it, Trev fell backwards and clutched his face.

"What the hell, dude?"

"What were you thinking, Kiera? Oh wait that's right. You weren't thinking. I've been trying to tell you to stay under the radar and what do you do? You use the power of the wind to completely toss us around like we don't weigh anything right in front of the entire cafeteria. Do you know what this means?" Declan was practically yelling and throwing his arms everywhere.

I looked down at them and remained in the tree. Like I didn't know what I had just done. I completely blew my chances of being an inconspicuous human being. Now I would be taken out of The Trials and if I'm lucky, banished to the Gray Sector if no one else knew I was the heir of the Blue Sector.

If I'm not lucky, I don't even want to think about what would happen then.

"Hey man. Take it easy. It's our fault she acted that way," Trev tried to reason as he stood back up and tried to stop Declan's arms from flailing all around.

"That hardly matters. She just used a power and there are witnesses. As far as anyone knew, she was just a human. You have no way to explain this, Kiera," Declan said ignoring Trev.

I ripped a leaf off the branch I was sitting on and tore it apart. I let the pieces drift down to settle on the ground before talking.

"Yeah I know I screwed up and I will get kicked out now. Just stop telling me what I already know," I said.

"I've already thought about having Trev plant images in everyone's heads about what happened and make it seem like it never happened. It's completely against The Rules and could only be used in self-defense because his power is one of the most dangerous. If not careful, he could melt all of their brains," the asshole kept saying.

There is no way I would even let Trev do that anyway so that was out of the question. There was nothing that I could do-

"But," Declan continued, "There is still something we can do."

Declan

Kiera climbed down the tree when I told her what we could do. The intercom sounded and all the entrants joined us in the backyard.

Most of them still gaped at her, but others just glared.

Coordinator Vlad clapped his hands to stop the buzzing chatter and spoke, "The unusual attack with yesterday's demon has been dealt with. Now more than ever because of the increase in demon attacks, we need strong Guardians and Supporters. This will be the Final Trial before determining the Sector and job each of you will be assigned to. These aspects will be announced individually tomorrow morning."

Excited whispers filled the air as everyone suddenly became jittery.

"However, the line still applies. Fall below it and you will find out your positions tonight. Let's get started."

He lead us to the back of the yard and told us all to sit. Once we were seated according to sectors he explained the final trial.

"The final trial has always been an aerial one. No human has ever made it this far," he said raising his eyebrows at Kiera. She held his gaze when he continued, "Therefore, Kiera you are at a disadvantage. Your name will automatically be placed beneath the line and your situation will be discussed tonight."

Sitting next to me, Justine made a satisfied smile.

I looked over to see what Kiera would do about this and was surprised to see her openly glaring at Coordinator Vlad. I had expected her to do something reckless, like usual.

With each defeat and win, names were placed on the board. Justine, Trev, and I won our battles and remained in the same order as before.

Kiera patiently sat through each aerial battle up until the last one.

"My turn," she said and everyone looked at her like she was crazy.

I cursed under my breath. I knew she was up to something.

Coordinator Vlad looked shocked for a second and then nodded.

"Very well. Trev, please get ready for another battle."

Kiera

Well, I surely did not expect that to happen. I didn't expect Coordinator Vlad to agree to let me fight. I sure as hell didn't expect Trev to be my opponent.

Trev smiled apologetically and motioned for me to get up.

We moved to the middle of the yard and faced off against each other.

His wings were firmly tucked against his back, showing no signs of releasing them.

I raised my arm to do something, I didn't know what. Before I had the chance to even do anything, something in my head cracked.

I was in so much pain, I dropped to the ground and grabbed my head. Rapid fast images exploded behind my tightly closed eyes.

Just as fast as the images were formed, they slowed down and I saw individual ones.

The first was of Trev in some foreign room in The Dorms talking to Coordinator Vlad.

"She's not human. She's one of us, sir," Trev was saying.

"I already figured she was different but now my suspicions have been confirmed. Thanks for telling me, Trev," answered Coordinator Vlad.

This image swirled out and formed a new one.

This time, Trev was looking right at me and smiling cynically.

"I got you good. The Blue Sector's Guardians and Supporters will be here shortly. After that, this screwed up society will fall to ruins all because of me. Coordinator Vlad just  thinks that he will send you back to the Gray Sector after he has me erase your mind. Little does he know, the war he has so desperately been trying to avoid by sending you back has already begun."

With another burst of pain, the images ended and my eyes flew open.

Trev was sporting the same twisted smile as in the vision he had showed me. He stood with his arms crossed, looking down at me.

"Go to hell," I bit out.

Declan

I was up and running when Kiera told Trev to go to Hell. Something wrong was going on here and was not going to end well.

I was only a few feet away from them when Kiera engulfed her entire arm in flames and flung her arm out towards Trev. The flames snaked off her arm and shot towards Trev.

Before the flames reached him, Trev opened his wings and with a mighty thrust, was twenty feet in the air.

"There's nothing you can do now. And when word gets out that the White Sector's beloved heir had a part in keeping her secret safe, you will both-"

Trev was cut off by an unseen force that pressed into him from all sides. His wings were plastered against the invisible ward and he couldn't move.

I glanced over at Declan whose arms were raised in an "X".

Trev's face turned purple from his oxygen source being cut out.

Declan said, "I knew you were working for them. You gave me the perfect excuse to tell Kiera to keep to herself and stay under the radar. Your visions don't work on me, traitor. All that about Kiera being the heir of the Blue Sector was all bullshit. You had me and Coordinator Vlad fooled for a while there, I'll admit. I did believe Kiera was the daughter of the Third Descendant. Now, through experiencing your power, I found the difference between planting real and fake images in others' minds. All those you put in our heads were all fake. You-"

"You...are...too...late..." Trev struggled to say.

At that, a battle cry of a bunch of Nephilim rang out in the yard and at least fifty of them ran in through the trees or flew from up above. They all wore black clothes and were obviously not from the Blue Sector.
