Epilogue
Save My Day (boyxboy)
"Christopher!" I call through the house. This house is too freaking big. I told him we don't need this much space, "Christopher!" When the baby slung against my chest starts to cry from the loud shouting, I hold our daughter tighter to me and making calming 'shh' noises.
If I have to try and find my husband right now, I'm going to kill him. I told him to be ready ten minutes ago. Now, we're going to be late.
He appears from around the corner with a struggling two year old wiggling in his arms. Even as Chris tries to hold him our sons is cackling and trying to run away. The sight makes me smile, but I quickly wipe it from my face when I realize again what time it is.
"We have to go," I lift a brow at him. "Are you ready?"
He throws a still giggling Sam over his shoulder as I rock Brie against my chest.
"I just have to put Monster's shoes on," his breath is a little labored and his smirk appears. He steps closer to me and kisses Brianna on her head before kissing me on the lips and heading out of the room with the blonde curls of our son bouncing behind him.
"If he doesn't hurry," I whisper to our cooing daughter, "you're going to grow up one daddy short."
Ten minutes later and we're out the door, twenty minutes late. We're supposed to be meeting with Linda and a few producers to talk about some movie deal. I didn't get much detail because she said she'd rather tell us in person, but we trust her enough that it wasn't a problem. She knows by now what we do and don't need.
Since we got married for the second time seven years ago, we've pretty much use Linda to manage both of us. Johnny still helps out when he hears of something, but it just got to be too much. It's easier with just one, plus she can compare our schedules together. Now that we have kids, one of us has to be home all the time.
We decided to have kids a few years ago. We really wanted to be more stable than we were. We traveled a lot after we got married. I've always wanted to see the world and Chris loved it too, but after years of that we wanted to settle down. Angela even volunteered to be our surrogate.
At first we were a little unconvinced because we didn't want her to have to feel like she was obligated, but she wouldn't give up. She said that she didn't want kids of her own because she wouldn't be able to do what she loves (she travels with the Peace Corps now). And with her as the biological mother and in vitro to make Chris the biological father, our children would be as genetically close to us as possible. We couldn't really argue that logic and let Angela help us.
We paid for all her expenses and she even lived in our house both times during the pregnancies. She was a bit of a handful for those nine months, but our kids were worth every second. Now she just comes around when she can to say hello or check up with us. She's been a real blessing.
When we show up to the restaurant that the meeting is taking place, we rush to get the babies out of the cold and inside the warm building. Brie goes back into the baby sling as I grab the diaper bag and Chris wrestles with our rambunctious two year old. Sam's always this crazy. I swear the child sneak candy while we're not watching; a sugar high is the only way I can explain it. But I guess he is his father's son.
Stopping at the hostess stand, I tell the young woman our last name and her eyes instantly get huge. After a few second of her not moving, I duck to look into her glazed over eyes, "Are you alright?"
Her graze flicks up to Topher then back to me. "You guys are Damon and Topher Ashton," she says it like a statement as if we may not know.
Chuckling lightly, Toph nods, "That's us."
"Oh my god," she breathes. She has to be about twenty-five, but she looks like she's about to squeal like a teenager. I place a hand over Brie's ears just in case. The last thing I need is a startled baby. She looks at my hand and then over to our crazy toddler before asking, "Is this Sam and Brie?"
"Is it," my husband confirms and she coos.
"They're so cute!" she tells us as she picks up a few menus. "Do you want a kids menu for Sam?"
It's still weird to me that complete strangers know our names so well, much less our children's. It just rubs me the wrong way.
"Yes please," I answer her just so we can get a move on.
A few moments later, we're standing in front of a table where Linda and two men are sat. They all stand at our arrival and give the proper greeting: a kiss on the cheek from Linda and a bold handshake from the two men. We have the hostess grab a highchair so we can try to contain the beast. Once he has food in front of him, he should be fine.
The waiter is over to us immediately taking drink orders and promising to be right back.
"Sorry we had to bring the kids," I apologize as we get situated, "the babysitter cancelled last minute. Also why we're a bit late."
Linda reaches out and I know exactly her intentions, "Let me see that baby." She gently takes Brie into her own arms and starts to coo at her. When she looks up at us, she smiles, "Don't worry, you're forgiven this time because you brought the baby."
"We should bring Brie around more often," Topher winks at me.
Shaking my head, I turn to our manager who's softly rocking our daughter, "So what did you want to talk about?"
"Oh oh," she seems to remember it's not just her here and point to each man, "this is Ted and Avery. They want to talk to you about a movie deal."
"For both of us?" I ask doubtfully.
Avery nods and set his elbows on the table, "Both of you."
This is when our waiter turns back up. He brings our drink and writes down our food orders; all of which we have to look over the menu quickly. Luckily, it's just fancy American food so it's not too difficult to choose.
When he leaves, Ted enters the conversation, "We want to produce a movie of your lives."
Speechless would be an understatement. I'm basically gob smacked. Who would be interested in our lives?
"Why?" Topher asks before I can.
"We think your story is inspiring," Avery tells us. He leans in a little more looking between the two of us, "From what everyone heard in the media, your experiences following your friendship to your second marriage and all the way until now, you guys are the epitome of what everyone wants in their love life. Whether they are gay or straight or indifferent, everyone can relate in some way to your love. You guys never gave up. It's rare to find such a pure love and there are millions of people that still love you to this day because of it."
"It wasn't just rainbow and butterflies," Toph tells him just as our son decides it's a good time to start rambling as loud as he can. Turning to Sam, he smile, "Thank for the emphasis there, Monster."
"Give him a few snacks from the here, love," I hand over the diaper bag before turning back to Avery and Ted. "I still don't understand."
Ted leans back in his chair and squints his eyes at me, "How would you describe your relationship?"
"Hectic," I chuckle and turn to my husband who's offering our son some fruit snacks, "but loving."
"Papa, Papa, Papa, Papa," Sam teeters back and forth as he puts fruit snack after fruit snack in his mouth.
"What?" I answer to only get a colorful smile. Pointing at him, I raise an eyebrow, "Chew those before you put another in your mouth."
He dramatically chews his snack before making a show of swallowing and holding his tiny hand out to Chris. My husband puts a piece into his hand and receives a smile, "Thank you, Daddy."
Toph then turns to the producers in front of us, "So say we give you these rights, then what?"
"Then," Ted starts, "we send a writer to you and you guys tell him everything. All the details, conversations you had, places you went, feelings, the people around you, everything you can think of gets thrown into this project. You two will be there every step of the way. You'll obviously get a cut of the proceeds and influence on all the decisions made."
"And what if we pass on this?" I ask just a little curious.
Avery shrugs, "We've heard of chatter of other people asking for the same thing. We just wanted to get to you so you know you can have a part of the whole thing. If you choose someone else, you may not get the amount of power as you would get with us."
When I turn to Linda, I see that she's making faces at my daughter and not paying much attention to us. I have to laugh because she's such a sucker for kids. Waving my hand in her direction, her head snaps up and she gets a bashful look on her face, "Sorry. Did I miss something?"
"What do you think of this whole proposition?" I question her.
Handing Brie back over to me, she's careful to cradle her as she tells me, "I've worked with these two a couple times and I think they're great people to have. They'll do right by you and they'll make sure you get everything you need. I think if you're going to go with this movie idea, they're the best people to pick."
"I didn't even know we were a topic people actually talked about," I place Brie back in her sling before turning to Chris, "Can you grab me a bottle from the bag, please?"
Unlike Sam, Brie never cries. She never whines or anything. Even though she's only six months, I can tell she's going to be a lot easier to handle than her brother.
As he grabs bottle and formula, handing it over, but looking at Ted, "What exactly are you looking for in this? We've been together for going on eight years - friends for nine. What time period did you want?"
"We want the beginning for the first marriage through the second," he explains and pulls a folder out of a suitcase that I didn't notice at his feet.
Opening it, he pulls out a few tabloid magazines from years ago. After mix the bottle together, I lean over just slightly (careful not to squish my daughter) to see what they are. The first one has me on the front with 'Mystery Wedding' scrawled at the bottom. The next is one of Chris and I on The Brikk Walford Show it says 'Mystery "Bride" Revealed'. The next few are scandals made up by the media: 'Topher Finds a New Woman', 'Drug Scare for Damon', 'Tophamon Split'. Next comes a few from the period of my trial: 'Damon American Imposter', 'Topher Smuggles Illegals', and "Tophamon Marriage Fraud'. Then the last ones are from the award show and our wedding: 'Golden Couple Sweeps Awards', 'Biggest Star Wedding Ever', and 'Tophamon Happily Ever After'.
I find myself chuckling along with my husband. Looking up to Ted, I smile, "Where did you find these?"
"I had them," Linda admits slightly raising her hand. "I kept them from when they came out. You two are a power couple whether you want to believe it or not."
"I'm all for it," Chris throws his comments in before looking at me and shrugging. "What could it hurt?"
"Nothing," I admit as I give Brie her bottle and turn to the two producers again, "I suppose it's alright."
"Wait a second," my husband stops and put his hands up, gaining everyone's attention, "who are you getting to play us?"
We all chuckle a little except for Sam who puts on a grumpy face and put his tiny fists to his hips, "Daddy!"
When he gets a "What?" from Chris, my son points to the snacks in his hand and gives him an expectant look.
We all chuckle again just as the waiter comes back with our food. The food is great along with the service. We discuss contracts and deals while we eat. By the end of the evening, we're just chatting about anything and having a great time.
I know it's time to leave when Sam starts to fall asleep sitting up. Every once in a while his blue eyes snap open and he looks around confused. It's the cutest thing. But soon, Chris takes him out of the chair and we're heading out. Linda kisses both of us on the cheek and the babies on the head. We shake hands with Avery and Ted who tell us to expect a contract soon.
Once we get home and the kids are in bed, we get into our pajamas and climb into our own bed. As we snuggle in, I look down to Chris' head on my chest, "How weird is it that they want to make a movie out of our life?"
"I definitely wasn't expecting it," he says in his sexy gravely tired voice. "Who knew nine years later someone would be telling us we had an epic romance?"
"I don't know if it's quite epic, so to speak."
"You remember when I told you that you saved me?" he looks up at me and yawns.
Nodding, I run my fingers through his hair, "During the award show broadcast before our wedding."
"I meant it," he places a quick kiss on my chest and snuggles closer. "And still nine years later, after everything we've put up with, everything with dealt with, and everything we've been through, you continue to be my savior. You and Sam and Brie are the reasons I wake up every morning with a smile on my face and go to sleep every night thinking how I can make your lives better. Even today, you do more for me than I can express when you do nothing at all. Nine years later, you still save my day."
