Chapter 12

Chapter 11 - Did I majorly mess up in my past life?

Secrets and Things (MxM)

Another lovely warning: I know nothing about the business and corporate world so I will proceed to make shit up. This was a dream remember.

--------------------

POV: Nerovsky

One month later...

Exactly one month had passed since my first day at MegCorp. One month since the day I scared the living shits out of my best friend. One month since my last, unfortunate interaction with the CEO of MegCorp Mr. Covell. Deep inside, I feel disappointed that we haven't ran into each other ever since. I'm just going to blame my thirst for some eye candy. Regardless, even till this day, I try to forget that day ever exists but alas, my asshole manager Matthew will remind me at least once a week. That motherfucker was clearly sadistic.

That being said, there had been some positives since then. I've adjusted relatively quickly and got into the habits of things. I'm still shy and introverted as fuck (which is probably why I'm so out there when I'm undercover) but I made pretty decent friends from my department. Matthew Williams for one, even though every sign's telling me to run from him if I want a happy life. He is friendly and outgoing with everyone but for some reason, (let's be honest. We all know the reason) he invites me and couple others during break or hangs around my area whenever he's free. So I'll take it as being one of the closer friends of his. I also made friends with my cubicle neighbours, Mason Norman and Pearl Klein.

How I made friends with them was a bit of an odd way though. I was minding my own business and typing away with those two gossiping about the incident caused 6 months ago by yours truly, when out of nowhere they ask me.

"Hey, Nerovsky. Have you heard about the incident that happened with our ex-boss/manager? The news basically summarised the entire incident, since someone leaked some hardcore stuff but some details were still kept under wraps that only the company knows."

I gave you the details that were kept under wraps. Obviously, I had to play dumb and politely replied, "I- I know as much as- as the general public knows. I didn't think bad of the company or else I wouldn't b- be here but I was always curious wha- what happened afterwards?"

Those two looked at each other with knowing smiles and looked back, clearly with the full intent of telling me what happened. I'm sitting next to gossip machines. They're the scariest yet the most useful. "Well we don't know much ourselves but Borris obviously got escorted out to put it nicely, which left us, manager, less. We expected to be in that state for at least a week because choosing someone you trust after being betrayed is not easy. Except the next day, Matthew Williams – who was previously like us – just came in, said he's our new boss, no one complained and now we're here. As laid back as he seems, boss knows what he's doing and is probably the most hardworking out of us all."

After hearing all that, my respect for Matthew rose a bit more and never felt more satisfied to work under him (instead of Borris) but that still didn't stop me from taking a jab at him at that moment, causing me to break into my other persona temporarily.

"Eh. I think I still stick by my theory of Matthew using his sadistic nature to utilize Mr. Covell's kinks against him to score him his position."

They took an immediate liking to me – if they're 10 minutes of non-stop hysteric laughter indicated anything – and since then, we've gone to a nearby pub for a drink at least once a week. When Aiden found out that I had made said friends, he began tearing me up and started saying bullshit like "My baby has grown up so much" or "He's not lonely anymore." Frankly, it was quite patronizing so I just punched him in the face to shut him up. It worked.

Back on the topic of positive things happening this month, the workload was perfectly fine and it wasn't too little or too much, which relieves a shit ton of stress off me (maybe because I'm still new but still). Which probably explains why I haven't had an "off day" of some sort. Bad things had happened here and there but nothing to ruin my day.

That was, until today.

It seemed I had reached my expiration date for a non-troublesome life because everything had hit all in one day.

This was how my day started out. I first woke up late because the phone which had my alarm set was dead, so then I had around an hour to get to work which is pushing it. Then while I was frantically putting on my suit I stubbed my toe on the corner of my dressing table and which ended with me cursing the world and my ancestors to my entire neighbourhood. Anyway, now around this point, I was tired, in pain and hungry because I couldn't afford to have breakfast if I wanted to get to MegCorp on time. After all that, I had to take public transport AKA a train because my car is still in bloody repairs and by default, public transport is never a good thing. It's a death worthy thing when your train decides to cancel two trains when you're in a rush, which is what happened. So now I'm late regardless of whether the train ever arrives.

Once I had reached my station, I decided to walk the rest of the way since I'm late anyway so might as well be later without any more accidents. Except, I really must've done something wrong to god this specific day because some other dude, who was in a rush, crashed into me, made me go down and spilt his FRESH, BURNING coffee all over me. I did not scream because the poor boy looked like he was about to cry so I just let him go after his mantras of apologies. But boy did that hurt. Once I had reached work, nearly everyone who walked by me had stared because I looked like I walked through a tornado and smelt like a bathed in caffeine (and no one had a spare shirt so I had to be like this the entire fucking day).

Needless to say, once I reached my cubicle, I was not having it and would not deal with any sort of shit. The message clearly went around since everyone avoided me like the plague, even Matthew. Regardless, my bad luck evidently didn't end there though. It lasted throughout the entire working hours. From annoying workmates to printer ink running out to last minute documents that need handing in. You name it, it probably happened all today. By the time I clocked out, I was ready to stab anyone and anything who called out my name and I know I looked downright murderous, as people unquestionably felt chills down their spine when walking past me.

Finally done with work, I reached the ground floor and headed towards the exit. It was 6:05 pm and I was ready to break Oddity regulations (again), get out my wings and fly back home. But I don't, because I'm a good, law-abiding citizen. Well, most of the time. Let's not count my other job for the sake of feeling better and proving my point.

I walked out of the automatic gates a little dazed and with the thought of what I should have for dinner. I was so out of it that I don't initially notice a group of people entering the establishment. When I do snap out of it, I studied the flashy group. The group is comprised of two men in black suits who were also wearing black shades (we're inside?) and they were surrounding a mid-twenties, attention-attracting lady. She was blinged up in every way possible – earrings, necklaces, bracelets, even anklets – and she had sparkly branded clothes. Gucci, LV, Supreme, etc. Point is, she had money and she wasn't ashamed to flex it. She was also wearing large designer shades and when she took them off to talk to the receptionist, it revealed a young-looking Asian face. 500 bucks that she was an international student somewhere. Also, who walks around with two bodyguards on the daily these days? Well... other than the president that is. Anyhow, I couldn't care less about her and continued advancing towards the exit, except I began slowing down my pace when I heard a loud, high pitched and more importantly, extremely rude voice cut through the ground floor. I later learnt that I should've just ignored it and walked through the gates.

"Excuse me but I would like to see Leo."

The startled receptionist did her job as per usual. "Mr. Covell? Have you made an appointment with him?"

She just waved (literally) the question off. "I don't need to make an appointment. Just tell him Beatrice Chase wants to meet now."

Curiosity once again got the best of me and caused me to stop in my tracks. Chase... isn't that the last name of the owner of that ramen company that we're partnered with or something? Like they advertise their shit on our apps. I mean then again, Chase is a common name but considering the outfit the chick is wearing, she's most likely the daughter of said guy. It'll explain why she's so comfortable calling him by his first name as well. Everyone somehow knows everyone in the business world.

Beatrice was giving off an intimidating and superior aura so the innocent receptionist nervously replied with, "Ma'am unfortunately without an appointment, I cannot send you up..."

You could practically see the steam coming out of her ears and (I'm assuming) her face turning red when she rebutted back. "I said to tell him who I am and I will be let through. Do you know who I am? I am Beatrice Chase, the heir of Rameno. I can destroy your life right here, right now if I want to."

Presently, everyone had gone quiet and were all quietly observing the spectacle going on. Some were even recording it onto their phones because clout. Is this bitch stupid? She's single-handedly destroying herself and her company in front of everyone. Your father is gonna whoop you.

The receptionist continued with a quiver in her voice. Her tear glands were clearly about to break through the dam. "I- I- I- I'm s- s- so- so- so- sorry -ry. I do- don't have th- the autho- authority to do to do that."

I inwardly sighed to myself and shook my head in sympathy. This was clearly going to go nowhere but downhill. Once again, I walked towards the outside, with the thoughts, not my problem. Not my problem. Not my problem. I know I'm pissed and want to kick her all the way to Russia but I cannot do anything about since I do not have the power to. Other people can handle it. I've had a bad day and need to get out of here. Do not get involved.

"Fine. If you won't take me, I'll just get one of your employees to take me up. Don't you dare stop me if you know what's good for you." With that being said, she turned around and faced the rest of the building. Everyone immediately avoided eye contact and tried to look busy. Some people began escaping outside, me included and I was so close when I heard "Hey. You. Stop." I didn't stop because duh, she could be referring to anyone but then she ploughs through. "I said stop. The one with the ugly brown spot on his shirt that is near the entrance."

Now that stopped me and looked towards her direction. Her mouth was in a straight line and her eyebrows were narrowed. Before I could count to five, she began walking towards my direction.

Oh god, not me. Please not me. Surely not me. Nope, she's definitely looking at me and definitely heading towards me. She's getting closer oh my god. What the fuck did I do in my past life today to deserve this kind of day. I blame my Oddity. It's because I made a contract with the devil, isn't it? Annndddd she stopped right in front of me.

She was shamelessly studying me with a hard glare (I swear she was checking herself out in the reflection of my glasses), mouth in a frown and her nose scrunched up (from the smell of the coffee most likely). I'm too tired for this shit. With that being said, I gave the fakest smile possible and inquired,

"Yes, Ms. Chase. How may I help you?"
