The Enemy's Ambassador ⚜ Ch. 5
Royal Academy Diaries II
Because the seating arrangement had been changed in Government, he brought the chocolate to theatre that next day. The moment class was over, he got his bag and went over to him.
"Yosef," he smiled, "Do you have a minute? I brought the chocolate."
He looked hesitant. "Oh, um, sure."
He was nervous talking to such a cute guy. And knowing how talented and intelligent and kind he was made him all the more intimidating. They sat on the edge of the stage as he pulled it out. "Here you go," he said, handing him a small bar.
Yosef took it and started unwrapping it. "Why haven't you given this to someone else? What about that pretty girl you met yesterday? All she could talk about in Economics was how you two spent the afternoon together."
He frowned. "What was her name, Cora? She had more tentacles than a squid. And obviously other interests too."
Yosef didn't look at him. "What about that ballerina, Claire? I saw you talked to her the other day."
"Claire? I bumped into her and was apologizing. Besides, I prefer brunettes. What is this all about, Yosef?"
He looked down, and Rolf saw his lip quiver. "You know that I'm exactly what your people hate? I grew up in a caravan wagon. I'm a gypsy," he admitted quietly, his voice full of emotion.
His heart sank a little. "Yosef, I am not a Nazi," he said a bit firmly. "I never supported what they do."
He finally looked at him, his eyes betraying his fear and mistrust. "How can I be sure?"
"Look into my eyes and tell me I'm lying. I don't want to hurt you or anyone, Yosef. I swear."
"And what do you want?" he asked quietly.
Rolf was quiet for a moment. "To love another human being who I see as an equal. To be on stage and escape into other worlds and other lives. To be free of the hate and destruction my people are known for."
Yosef was silent, considering him. "You're telling the truth, aren't you?"
He gave him a small smile. "I am. Say, how about we go to town and I'll buy you something from the bakery?"
Taking a breath, he nodded. "If you'd like."
He smiled and put a hand on his. "Come on. Let's go get a cab."
They went out of the school to the ever waiting cabs out front. Rolf asked about him on the way to the village, and bought the biggest chocolate covered pastry the bakery offered.
As Yosef took a bite, he grinned. "You know what? Your chocolate really was better."
