Chapter 18

2 Bold

Madam President (Kamala Harris x female reader)

Her eyes widen in surprise as her husband approaches her, she quickly smiles and gives him a greeting as he hugs her. "Doug!" She says, a hint of nervousness in her voice. She sneaks a glance in your direction and her heart leaps when she sees the frown on your face, knowing how you feel right now. He then greets you with a handshake and you fake smile. "A pleasure to see you Doug, even if I thought you had something scheduled?" You suggest as he nods. "I freed myself, I wanted to be here for my wife." You want to roll your eyes but just smile. "Of course..." Kamala watches, her husband's arm around her shoulders and her eyes darting back and forth between the two of you. She knows the polite smile on your face is forced and she notices the hint of irritation in your voice when you mention that he should have been doing something else instead of being here right now. You look at the other people present and introduce youself to them, meeting Kamala's sister, her cousins and nieces. She watches as you introduce yourself to her family present, a smile on her face.

She feels a mixture of pride and envy as you charm her family with your manners and witty conversation. It distracts you for a moment from your irritation at seeing her husband. Everyone walks to the room reserved for the occasion and when they all pick their seats, you glance at Kamala questioningly. She looks back at you and gives an imperceptible nod, silently telling you to sit beside her. She can feel the annoyance and restlessness radiating from you and she can relate to the feeling, her husband being here and sitting right next to her already is making her anxious. You get the hint and sit next to her right casually. She gives you a small, grateful smile as you sit and she reaches out to gently place her hand on your thigh, the action hidden under the table. Her heart swells when her fingertips feel the warmth of your skin. You smile as you feel it, grateful you're touching somehow and you brush her hand with yours as a thank you then everyone starts talking about what to order. Her husband is busy talking to one of the cousins so you try to start a casual conversation knowing you have to be careful. "What are you getting?"

Her heart pounds a bit as she feels your hand brush against hers, feeling a flood of comfort coming from that simple touch. She glances at her husband who's distracted, talking to one of her relatives and then looks back at you, smiling faintly. She can feel that you're trying to maintain normalcy in front of all these people and she does her best to return the favor. "Oh, I think I'll have the lobster." "Well that's not a subtle way of reminding me you're rich!" You say playfully. "It's awful I won't be able to k-" You were about to say kiss but stop yourself in realization. She can't help the little laugh that escapes her at your comment, a little shiver going down her spine when she thinks about what you almost said. She squeezes your thigh lightly, a mixture of affection and teasing in her eyes. "Watch it, sweetheart..." "Yes sorry, almost slipped!" You say then the waitress gets to your table and takes your orders. Once she's gone Kamala's sister starts a conversation with the whole table. "So your speech today! Are you happy about how it went? We all watched you on TV and Doug was really proud of you!" She says to Kamala.

She blinks a little, her mind still distracted by your comment but she quickly snaps out of it, her brain switching to "presidential" mode as she gives her sister a smile and nods. "Yeah, it went great. Honestly, I was a bit nervous but it ended up fine." She looks at her husband who smiles at her and reaches over to put his hand over hers, his proud smile on his face. You want to yell at him for even touching her but contain yourself, she's his wife, not yours... you say to yourself. She sees how you quietly seethe as he holds her hand and she silently pats your thigh under the table, giving you a reassuring smile trying to tell you that she's alright. Everyone notices her glance at you and someone from her family you've met before speaks up. "Oh that's right (y/n) you're new to the team, it's your first big event with the president!" They start talking about you. The older woman watches as the table's attention shifts to you, suddenly a little nervous as she watches her family scrutinize you but she stays silent and just smiles, listening. Her eyes are on you though and she pats your thigh under the table again, almost as if to tell you to be careful on how you answer this.

"I heard it was important to you right?" You nod and try to stay calm as the attention is on you. "Yes it was, in this law project there's the full and permanent protection of gay rights and the queer community. It's touching me on a deeper level because of friends, connections..." You look at Kamala subtly. "There's more queer people in America that you imagine, you know?" She can't help the small little smile that appears on her face when you look at her subtly, her heart swelling with affection for you and pride at hearing you speak so confidently about her law project that is so important to her. She wants to reach out and brush her fingers against yours that are probably laying on your thigh under the table, but she refrains herself, trying not to make anything suspicious that her family might pick up on. One of her cousins nods in agreement to your statement and replies. "Oh yeah, it's crazy how many people are actually queer nowadays!" They're interested and keep asking you questions. "That's right I saw a lot of people realizing it and coming out at 50/60." You nod and reply. "It makes sense actually. Back in the day, being gay was risky and expressing yourself was less common. Some people are married since years and years and one day they figure it out, it happens." You say suggestively for Kamala playing a little with fire here but you felt so annoyed that something kinda snapped in your mind.

She almost chokes on her wine when you mention marriage so blatantly, her eyes widening slightly as her brain realizes the risk of this. She swallows and tries to act normal as she takes a breath, watching how everyone is paying attention to you, her eyes darting between her family, her husband and you. One of them agrees with your sentiment and says. "Oh, you're so right. Being queer was a lot more complex back then. I'm glad people can actually express themselves now." "Well not entirely, that's why Kamala's projects are so important." You say with a nod by hinting at something deeper that only her can understand. "So that every queer person can have a chance to be authentically themselves without shame and guilt." You hint again for her, subtly calling her out. She can feel her heart skip another beat when you hint at something that obviously alludes to her closeted status, her throat starting to feel dry as she watches you casually throw her secret around the table without a care in the world, her eyes burning a hole on you as if to ask "WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?!" She notices how they all nod in agreement, not picking up on anything you said but her heart is racing and she feels incredibly anxious. "Yea this cause is very important to me."

"It is, you were always really close to the lgbt community and I'm very grateful for that." You say as you turn to her with a disguised smile, targeting her directly. You're irritated and this is how you cope with it but you don't truly realize the depth of what you're doing in the moment. She swallows again as you look at her and smile, knowing you're trying to call her out in front of everyone and her heart is pumping a little furiously, a mix of anxiety about your recklessness and also that you're bringing this up in front of her family. She just nods and smiles faintly in return, her eyes looking deeply into yours as if to tell you to stop talking. "For all we know Doug could very much be pansexual!" You say jokingly making everyone laugh but Kamala knows you chose Doug for a reason. She almost rolls her eyes when you bring up her husband, her mood now switching from anxiety to annoyance, her heart hammering in her chest as her eyes stay locked on you. She's trying to remain outwardly calm but she's nervous for what you're going to say next, the last thing she wants is for her family to get suspicious. "Oh you don't say darling?" She says back in a dry tone. "Hey we never know, what if you're secretly a lesbian uh?" You joke again for the family.

She feels like your jokes are starting to get more and more dangerous, her heartbeat getting faster and faster every time you bring it even close to her truth. She tries to maintain her composure though and just laughs with the others. She raises her brow and looks at you, her voice low but trying to remain cool and casual. "Oh, trust me honey I'm definitely not a lesbian." "Perhaps you didn't come to the realization yet..." She nearly groans in frustration when you refuse to drop the subject and keep hinting at the part of her true self she's been desperately trying to keep a secret. She feels her heart hammering in her chest and has to remind herself that she has to remain calm. She takes a breath and smiles faintly.  "I'm pretty sure I would've come to that realization by now darling." "Theeen you might need a little help." You say and wink flirtatiously at her making it look like you're joking and causing everyone at the table to laugh. She feels her cheeks flush in embarrassment when you wink at her, her heart jumping in her chest because of the implications of the gesture but thankfully the table just takes it as a joke and laughs along with you, including her husband who chuckles lightly.

She swallows and feels a little flustered, but then gives you a look that says: are you serious?! "Nah don't worry Doug, I'm not stealing your wife!" You add playfully even if you did already but nobody knows... She watches as you try to reassure her husband and feels a mix of relief that her family believes your jokes are lighthearted but also a tinge of anger at you jokingly flirting with her in front of everybody. Thankfully that doesn't last as the food arrives. You enjoy the distraction to stand up and excuse yourself as you check your phone. "Sorry I need a second, important phone call for Madam President." You say as you squeeze Kamala's shoulder quickly and walk out to the balcony. It's obviously an excuse as you need a break, secretly super mad and annoyed at the situation. She watches you walk to the balcony and after a few seconds of internal debate, she looks at the rest of her family and stands up. "Excuse me, I'll be right back..." She smiles and quickly walks outside.
