Chapter 29: Engagement
Demon: Book 1
Chapter 29
Engagement
Titus entered room carrying a small cooler. I smiled as he handed me my lunch and sat down at my side along the ledge above the bed.
âHow did the hunt go?â I unzipped the top and took out a sub sandwich. After a week of being trapped here, this had become our daily routine.
âAs good as any other,â Titus replied.
I opened up the water bottle and took a drink. âWhy do you hunt? Couldnât those WIR people give you all the food you need?â
Titus nodded. âNorthern Ridge is traditional. So we hunt. During harder time, WIR does supplement the pack with food, and itâs just not as good as fresh meat.â
âSo there are packs that donât?â Opening the bag of chips, I offered it to Titus.
He took a couple. âCity packs, Darius calls them domestic. No better than lap dogs,â Titus chuckled.
âI couldâve met a werewolf before and never wouldâve know.â
With a smile, he kissed my cheek. âWe blend in pretty well.â
Ripping off some of my sandwich, I handed it to him.
âI donât need to eat all of your food.â
I kept holding it out. âI donât want to eat in front of you.â
Laughing, he took it. âIâd share with you, but I donât think youâll like raw elk.â
âNo, thank you.â I took a bite of my sub. âTitus, have you heard anything about my parents?â
âThey know youâre here. Darius overheard our dad talking to WIR reps. Your family was contacted. What exactly they know about the situation, Iâm not sure.â
With a sigh, I rubbed my forehead. âI didnât think I would be away this long.â
âIâm still working on my dad,â said Titus. âIâll get you home as soon as possible.â
I leaned against his side. âThank you. I like being here with you, but,â I glanced up at him, âitâs not fair to my parents.â
âHey.â He put his arm around my shoulder and squeezed me against him. âI understand. My family is important to me too.â
âTitus?â
âHmmmâ¦â
âIâve just been wondering.â I picked at the edge of the bun. âWhere is your mom at?â
He let out a deep breath. âShe passed away giving birth to me.â
Wide eyed, I pulled away and turned to face him. âIâm so sorry. I shouldnât have asked. Y-you just havenât said anything, and I saw that woman with Xavier.â I bit my lip. âSorry.â
âItâs fine.â He stared off into the hall. âXavierâs mate is Dariusâs mom, Rose.â
âHalf brother,â I whispered.
He nodded. âRose was pregnant with Darius, and my mother tended to alpha family. She was good friends with Rose, and she wanted a pup of her own. She was a weak wolf. No one ever took her as a mate.â
âSo Xavier?â
He nodded. âMy dad is a very strict leader, but he did care about my mother. I was a big pup, and it caused problems. Weaker werewolf healthing enzymes arenât as strong, and even if they were things still can happen.â Wringing his hands together, he glanced at me.
I wrapped my arms around his neck and hugged him. âItâs not your fault. Accident happen even for werewolves.â
âI know. I still feel guilty, at times, though.â he whispered. âRose raised me like a brother to Darius. I didnât find out about my mother until I was older, but I still wish I could have met her.â
âAnyone would.â I sat back on my knees. âI wish I could have met her too.â
Titus smiled and cupped my cheek. âShe would have love you.â
âWhy do you think that?â I laughed.
âBecause I love you.â
My face ignited. âI fell right into that one.â Biting my lip, I turned away.
Titus leaned in and kissed me. With a sigh, I laid against his chest. He put his arms around me and pulled over the cooler. I took out the candy bar and unwrapped it. Breaking it in half, I fed one side to Titus. He bit off a piece and grabbed the rest.
âYou need to be the one eating this.â
âI donât want it all.â I snapped off a piece and tossed it into my mouth.
âIâm going to tell them to pack you more food, since you keep feeding half to me.â
âYouâre worse than my mother,â I chuckled.
He gave me a hug, and I handed him the rest of the candy. We moved down into the bed and leaned against the side. Titus finished off the rest of the food, while I relaxed, curled up against him.
Hearing footsteps, I sat up. Darius entered the room and braced an arm against the wall.
âWhat do you need?â muttered Titus.
âAdenâs father here with WIR agents.â
âWhat!â I jumped up and ran over to him. âWhere? Where is he? Is he in the main chamber?â
Darius snatched my wrist. âYou better wait for Titus.â He tossed me back at his brother, before heading down the hall.
âTitus,â I grabbed his hand and pulled him toward the door. âMy dadâs here. Heâll talk to the alpha, and Iâll be able to go home.â I froze and my mouth dropped open. âMy dadâs here? He knows about werewolves?â
âI guess,â muttered Titus. Squeezing my hand, he led me to the main chamber.
âTitus, whatâs wrong?â
He shook his head and smiled. âNothing.â
We entered the room. All the dominants were circled around. I tried to get a glimpse past them, but all I saw were three men in suits. Titus pulled me to his side, and stop at the back of the group. I tugged on his hand, but he didnât move.
âI need to find my dad,â I whispered.
âLetâs just wait.â
âTitus.â I yanked my hand free and hurried off around the edge of the group.
I spotted my father red face and yelling at Xavier. My stomach dropped. Making the alpha mad was not going to get me out of here.
âDad!â I pushed through the group.
My father hugged me tightly. âAden.â He pressed my head against his shoulder before yanking over my shirt. âThank god, that bastard hasnât marked you.â
âHow did you know about this?â
He held me out in front of him. âIâve been a forest ranger for 20 years. My job is to make sure no one crosses the broader. I warned you. I told you, Aden, to not go near that fence. Why, why didnât you listen?â
âSorry,â I whispered, bowing my head. âI just want to fix things with Titus. I love him, dad.â
âThat boy, his kind, everything about him is not natural.â
âDad-â
âWeâll finish this later.â Pushing me behind him, he faced at Xavier. âIâm taking my son home.â
Folding his arms, Xavier laughed. âI think not. The boy trespassed. Heâs mine now.â
âDad?â I whispered.
âQuiet, Aden.â He held his finger up in the alphaâs face. âThose laws donât pertain to us. As an agent of WIR, we are imune, and I want my son back now.â
Xavier smirked. âOur agreement cover WIR agents, not their sons.â He nodded toward the man next to him.
The dark haired man grabbed my arm.
âDad!â
âGet off him!â
The man shoved my father back and dragged me over to the alpha.
âKeep a hold of him, Jericho.â
I struggled until I felt the elongated nails resting against my neck.
âThe boy has threatened the safety of my pack. I should just kill him now.â
âXavier, that is not needed,â said one of the men in a suit.
Jericho dug his finger into my skin but didnât break through.
âThat werewolf boy is the one to blame. He showed Aden this world. If it wasnât for Titus, then Aden never would have found out about werewolves. It his fault.â
âTitus,â chuckled Xavier. âMy son saw something he liked and went after it.â
âYour son?â breathed my dad.
âWhich is also apart of our agreement.â The alpha glanced at one of the men in a suit was a patch on the left breast.
âHeâs right, Perri.â
My father clenched his fist. âIâll be damn before I let my son become a monsters. I will not let you change him into one of you. Heâs human, and Aden is staying that way.â
âMonster,â scoffed Darius. âCalling us monsters isnât going to make us hand him over.â
âTitus,â called Xavier.
The gathering parted, and my boyfriend shuffled forward. I squirmed away from Jericho and went to his side.
âTitus, do something?â I pled.
He shrugged. âItâs up to the alpha, not me. Iâm sorry.â
âTitus, take Aden to your room and mate him.â
I shoved Titus and backed to my father. âNo.â
He didnât move. âI wonât, Aden. You know that.â
âYes, you will,â snapped the alpha. âGo mark the boy properly, and then Mr. Perri will have no need to argue. Aden will become the newest member of the pack.â
Titus shook his head. âI canât. I promise him.â
âYou will obey your alpha.â
My boyfriend glanced at me and swallowed hard. âWhat about an engagement?â
âA what?â I asked.
My father put his hand on my shoulder. âI wonât allow it. You will not put your mark on him.â
âShut up,â growled Darius. âAs I see it, an engagement is the only way Aden getting out here.â
Xavier glanced at his son. âWhat would you propose?â
âAgree to an engagement. It would protect, Aden from rogues, and the boy would be able to go home,â said Darius.
âRogues?â I breathed.
âReally,â spat Xavier. âYou thought a human coming to Northern Ridge wouldnât be notice by other packs. Letting you go home would risk an attacking your family and humans discovering us. Something, I will not allow.â
My father gripped my shoulder tightly. âI heard alpha like to make engagement deals.â
My mouth dropped open, and I turned around. âDad!â
âNot now, Aden.â He stepped in front of me and eyed Xavier. âI let this engagement happen. Aden returns home with me. He finishes high school. After he graduates, if Aden wishes to be with Titus than that will be his choice.â
I glanced at my boyfriend to see his shoulders rolled forward.
âBut if he decided not to be Titusâs mate,â continued my father. âThat it. Weâre done. Your son will have no further contract with Aden. Iâll even be willing to move if you're worried about the rogues coming to Harperâs Creek.â My father held out his hand.
âDuring that time, I suppose youâre going to do everything possible to get Aden to hate us,â muttered Darius.
âAden is human. He will remain one,â replied my father firmly, dropping his hand.
Xavier glanced at his son. âWhat do you think, Titus?â
He shrugged. âWhatever Aden wants.â
My dad put his arm around me and pulled me forward. âDoes this sounds okay to you?â
âIâll get to go home?â
He nodded.
Biting my lip, I turned to Titus. âWill I be able to see him?â
âNo,â stated my father sternly. âThat would defeat the purpose.â
Titus looked like a scowled pup.
I removed my dadâs arm from my shoulder. âI didnât do all this to loss him.â
âItâs too big of a risk,â said my father. âWe canât have a werewolf wandering around the house. Someone will see.â
I shook my head. âHeâs been coming to see me for months, and no one has ever found out.â
âAden.â He narrowed his eyes at me. âWhat do you mean he been coming for months?â
Sucking in my lips, I bowed my head. âAt night,â I whispered.
âYou are a grounded, Aden Perri. Grounded.â
I rubbed my arm and stared at the ground. âIâm sorry. I thought it would be okay.â
âI think the arrangement is fair.â Xavier motioned to his son. âMark him.â
âWait!â I held up my hands. âWhat do you mean mark?â
The group stood silently around. I looked around, but no one moved.
âNow Titus,â barked the Alpha.
My boyfriend shrugged off his clothes and shifted. He approached me.
âWhat are you going to do?â I whispered.
âItâll only hurt a little.â He tug my shirt over my head. âIâll heal it quickly.â
âTitus?â I shook my head. âI-I donât want too.â I knew the pain of a werewolf cut already. âWhy do we have to do this? I donât understand.â
âItâll be my mark, but donât worry, it wonât be permanent.â Nuzzling my neck, he pulled me close to him. âItâll be okay,â he whispered in my ear.
My heart rate started to increase as he licked my shoulder. I hid my face in his chest. Titus carefully tilted my head to the side. I felt the heat from his breath as he wrapped his jaws around my shoulder. Closing my eyes tightly, I felt his teeth touch my skin.
I cried out when they broke the skin. My mind faded as my knees gave out. We dropped to the ground. I opened my eyes to see Titus tending to the wound. He cleaned away any sign of blood.
Falling into his arms, I held onto him tightly. My body was shaky.
âItâs okay,â he whispered. âItâs over now.â He kissed the mark.
I clasped the area. âThis is what being engaged means to you.â
He hugged me tightly. âIâm sorry. I didnât want to hurt you.â
Someone pulled me away.
I struggled against them. âTitus?â
Darius placed his hand on his brother shoulder. Titus just knelt there on the ground as my father dragged me toward the exit.
âWait,â I said in a hoarse voice. âWait, Titus.â
My head was throbbing. My father wrapped an arm around my waist to keep me on my feet. There were two ATVâs sitting outside. My father helped me into one and wrapped a blanket around me.
âYouâre fine now, Aden. Weâll get you home.â My dad hugged me against his side. âYouâll never have to worry about those demons coming near you again.â
