: Chapter 20
Promise Me
Finding real love is like finding a hundred dollar bill in a Kmart parking lotâand about as likely.
Beth Cardallâs Diary The next morning at work Roxanne was as wired as a hummingbird on caffeine. âHow was it? Jan said you said it was perfect. Tell me everything. Full report.â
A content smile crossed my face. âHe was wonderful.â
âWhat did you do with Mr. Wonderful?â
âHe took me to my favorite restaurant. We talked. We laughed a lot. He is very sweet and funny and very romantic.â
âGirl, I told you so, didnât I?â
âAnd heâs Italian.â
âGrand slam.â
âThere was only one thing I didnât like about the date.â
âHe mentioned an old girlfriend,â Roxanne said. âHe wore white socks.â
âWhat? White socks? No, the only thing I didnât like is that he didnât kiss me. Maybe he saw me up close and changed his mind about me.â
âHoney, stop that. You know youâre gorgeous. And after how hard you tried to scare him off, he was probably just being careful. Or being a gentleman. And heaven knows we could use a few more of those.â
âWell, heâs coming over Sunday night to make fried rice.â
Roxanne nodded contently. âAnd he cooks. You were right, it may be too good to be true. So letâs get down to bare knuckles. How many times has he been married, and is he gainfully employed?â
âHe was married, once, and he was employed. Heâs between jobs right now.â
Roxanne grimaced. âOh, not good.â
âAbout which.â
âDivorced I can handle, but the âbetween jobsâ thing sounds a little dodgy.â
âI think itâs okay. Heâs financially stable, evident from the new BMW he was driving. He used to be a financial advisor, but heâs looking for something more meaningful.â
âMoney and conscience. So tell me thisâheâs Italian, gorgeous, nice, financially stable and can cook. What woman in her right mind would leave him?â
âHis wife died of cancer.â
She looked strangely happy to hear this. âOh.â
âI saw this very beautiful side of him. He was still mourning her.â
âTwo broken hearts who still believe in the promise of love. Beth, this is a gift from heaven, he could be your soul mate.â
âI canât believe Iâm saying this, but do you think itâs too soon to be falling in love?â
âWhen did you know you wanted to marry Marc?â
âSecond date.â
She nodded. âYou know when youâre out shopping and you find that pair of red high heels that practically kicks you from the shelf?â
I laughed. âYouâre comparing guys with shoes?â
âWell, I know itâs not fair to the shoes, but itâs essentially the same thing. When you know, you know.â
âYouâre a nut.â
âThatâs why you love me. So heâs coming over tomorrow night?â
I smiled at the thought of it. âTomorrow night.â
âAnd youâre not worried about Charlotte being there?â
âI should be, but Iâm not. Heâs even cooking something that Charlotte can eat.â
âI am so pleased for you. You discovered whatâs wrong with Charlotte, you found a nice, financially secure guy you like being withâIâd say things are finally looking up.â
I nodded happily. âIt feels like it. You think my luck has finally changed?â
âYes. And itâs about time, I say.â
âI hope,â I said. âI hope.â
