: Chapter 27
Promise Me
I donât know what to think. Matthew didnât just upset the game board, he changed the pieces, the dice and the rules. Actually he changed the whole game board too.
Beth Cardallâs Diary The next morning at work Roxanne just stared at the check. âHoly moly, holy moly, holy moly. Is this real?â
âItâs a money order.â
âTwo million six hundred and four thousand dollars. Youâre quitting, right?â
âI have no idea what Iâm going to do. This is overwhelming.â
âHe really gave it all to you. Every penny.â
I nodded. âI think so.â
âI tell you, the man is an angel. And if he wasnât before, he just earned his wings.â
âHeâs not an angel,â I said. âHe deceived me. I canât trust him.â
Roxanne gave me her sternest gaze. âGirl, did someone beat you with a stupid stick? How much more trustworthy could he be? He could have taken all that money and never looked back. But he didnât. He gave it all to you.â She held up the check. âYou got two million dollarsâ worth of trustworthy right here. What more proof could anyone ask for?â
I thought over her words. âYou think I made a mistake?â
âA mistake? No. Fighting a land war in Asia is a mistake. What you did was epic stupidity. Tossing out the best man youâve ever known. Criminee, the best man Iâve ever known. You should be worshiping the water he walks on.â
I exhaled. âIâm such an idiot.â
âThis time Iâm not disagreeing, girl. You go find him and beg him to take you back.â
âWhat if heâs gone?â
âThen Iâd search every inch of pavement in this city until I found him.â
I took a deep breath. âItâs okay if I leave?â
âIâll fire you if you donât.â
I kissed her cheek. âThanks, Rox.â
âYeah, you better thank me.â I heard her grumbling after me. âGod must love fools âcause he sure made a lot of them.â
