: Chapter 6
Promise Me
Is it our actions or our desires that define us? Thatâs like asking if the trip is made by the horse or the buggy.
Beth Cardallâs Diary Roxanne clapped enthusiastically when I walked in through the cleanersâ front door. âI should have baked a cake,â she said.
âShould have,â I replied.
âSo howâs it going?â she asked, following me back to the press.
âCharâs been doing a little better. I think she might be able to go back to school in a couple days.â
âAnd how are things with Marc?â
I thought of the pearls. âI donât know. He just got back.â
âBut youâve talked with him.â
I looked up at her. âHeâs remorseful and humble and walking on eggshells. And part of me just wants to smack him. Why canât he have the decency to at least be a jerk? Then I could feel good about hating him.â
âWell, donât kid yourself, he is a jerk and deserves to be smacked. Just donât get too carried away.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âSimple math. If you really want your marriage over, then spare yourself the drama and cut loose. But thatâs not really what you want.â
âHow do you know that?â
âBecause I know you better than you know yourself. You still love him. You wouldnât be so angry if you didnât. So if youâre not going to end the thing, donât damage it any more than you have to. You can beat your car with a baseball bat for breaking down, but if youâre not going to get rid of it, then someday youâll end up paying for all the damage you inflict. Does that make sense?â
I looked at her, wondering where she came up with this stuff. âIn your usual twisted way, yes.â
âI know it sounds strange to say it, but in some ways youâre lucky. Everyone makes mistakes. Under the right circumstances even you might.â
âI would neverââ
She interrupted me. âNever say never, baby. Good people sometimes do bad things. But at least Marc is willing to own up to it and seek forgiveness. That says something about him. And heâs been there for Charlotte all along. Itâs not easy for him to come crawling back into the lionessâs den to take care of his daughter, but heâs willing. He gets a gold star for that.â
âYouâre saying heâs a good guy?â
âIâm saying that heâs human. And to err is human. To forgive . . . well, thatâs love.â
