âWhat do your rings say?â Laila asked as she looked up at her mates.
Park smiled as he spun his ring so she could read it.
âMy Love; My Mate; My Queen,â Laila read out loud.
âMarkâs only says, My Love; My Mate,â Riley said.
âBecause youâre not the Queen of the Animals,â Mark said with a chuckle as he kissed her cheek.
âNor is Mark the leader of the bears,â Ryce pointed out.
âWe should figure out her gifts,â the Shaman said.
âGifts?â Riley asked. âBut I only have one.â
âJealousy does not become you, love,â Mark said.
Riley scowled, âIâm not jealous.â
Mark snorted, âsuu-re, youâre not.â
Riley shook her head, then sighed. âOkay, maybe a little. But sheâs my best friend, so I can live with it.â
Mark chuckled, âI hope so because sheâs also your queen.â
Riley swallowed. She hadnât thought of that. But there was no one better for the job than Laila.
âShe has two mates, which means two rings and two gifts,â the Shaman said.
âHow do we test for them?â Park asked.
âShe can give each gift a try,â Vectore said.
âThatâs what I did,â Riley said with a smile.
âFirst, weâll try healing,â Vectore said, âsince that was your motherâs gift.â
Vectore went into a room then came back with a small animal in his hands.
Laila frowned. It was a baby rabbit. âWhat happened to him?â She asked.
âHe fell into a trap while playing with his brothers and sisters. I promised his mother that I would bring him back once he was healed.â
âWhy didnât you heal him yourself?â Park asked.
âBecause I knew you were coming,â Vectore said with a smile.
Laila heard little cries in her head. The Shaman has kept him out of pain, but he missed his family and wanted to go home.
âPlace a hand on him and concentrate,â Vectore said, âsee if you can feel where he is hurting and heal him.â
Laila placed her hand on the little rabbit and closed her eyes. âI can sense where he hurts, but Iâve always been able to do that,â she said with a frown.
âRiley?â Vectore asked.
Riley walked over to them and placed her hand on the baby rabbit.
âItâs his back legs and a couple of ribs,â Laila whispered.
A soft glow came from Rileyâs hand, and then the little guy jumped up and scratched his ear with his back foot.
Laila and Riley smiled at each other.
Vectore smiled and set the rabbit on the floor of the cave. âWait outside, but donât go anywhere.â
âOkay! Thanks, pretty ladies!â
Laila stared at the little rabbit as he hopped away.
âOkay. On to the next test,â Vectore said.
An hour later, Laila had tried every test Vectore threw at her and still nothing. Her gifts were a dud.
âHow can this be?â Park asked, confused.
âMaybe the gifts I already had are all I get,â Laila said as she forced a smile. She was disappointed, but she didnât want her mates to know that.
âIâm sorry,â Paxton said as he pulled her into a hug.
âIâm fine honest,â she said as she held onto him.
âHow can this be?â An unfamiliar voice asked.
âI donât know,â Vectore said with a shrug, âI wish I did.â
Laila pulled away from Paxton and looked around the cave. Who else was here? Park, Paxton, Riley, Mark, and Ryce. Everyone she knows was right here. So, who was the new voice?
âDo you think it may just be dormant?â The voice asked.
âCould be,â Vectore said with a nod.
Laila looked over at Vectore then down at where he was looking.
Mekhi flapped his wings. âShe is still our queen.â
âOf course,â Vectore said with a smile.
âDaddy! Look what we found!â
Laila turned to find Avel and Nova waddling into the cave with something fuzzy in Avelâs beak.
Laila squealed. âAvel! Drop that!â
Avel immediately dropped the baby rabbit.
âWhat did I tell you about hunting here!?â The new voice yelled, berating the young Osprey.
âNot to,â another voice said, âbut he was dead.â
Laila picked up the baby rabbit. âAre you okay, little guy?â
The rabbit sat up in her hands. âYeah, thanks. Iâm good at playing dead, huh.â
Laila almost dropped the baby rabbit when she realized what was happening. The voices she has been hearing are from the animals.
âYes, you are,â Laila said as she cuddled the rabbit against her cheek then looked at the two younger Osprey. âAnd you two need to learn when an animal is really dead or playing dead because they are scared.â
Avel and Nova lowered their heads. âYes, maâam.â
Laila looked up and found everyone staring at her as if she should be in a looney bin. She smirked at them.
Vectoreâs mouth was hanging open, then it closed, and a brilliant smile brightened his handsome face.
âI think having two rings is affecting her sanity,â Mark said.
Vectore laughed, âshe is perfectly sane.â
Everyone looked at him for answers.
Mekhi flew to Lailaâs shoulder. âCan you hear me?â
Laila looked at her Osprey and smiled. âYes, I can.â
Mekhi flapped his wings, and she knew he was happy.
Vectore pointed at Laila and Mekhi. âYour mate has found her gift.â
Park and Paxton turned to their mate, and Laila smiled at them.
âI can hear the animalâs thoughts.â
The twins rushed at her and squeezed her tight. Mekhi flew to the ground, and the baby rabbit squirmed in her hands.
âTell your beasts to get off; theyâre squishing me!â
Laila chuckled, âyou guys are squishing Peter.â
âWhoâs Peter?â Park asked.
She held up the baby rabbit. âMeet Peter Cottontail.â
The twins looked at the baby rabbit and laughed.
âYeah, yeah. Laugh it up, big guys. My mom thought it was cute too, but all I get is teased.â
âAww,â Laila said as she cuddled the rabbit, âI think itâs adorable.â
If a rabbit could smile, she was sure Peter would be right now.
âSo, you can talk to them now?â Riley asked as she walked over to Laila.
Laila nodded, âyep. Was confusing at first.â
âWhy didnât you test me for that gift?â Riley asked as she turned to the Shaman.
âBecause no one but ME has ever received that gift,â Vectore said.
âMakes sense that the Queen of Animal Kind would receive it.â
Laila looked at Mekhi as he spoke. This will take some getting used to. But she was already comfortable with it. Hadnât she always wished she could talk to her animals?
âDoes this mean she can communicate with us as bears?â Paxton asked.
âOnly one way to find out,â Vectore said.
Paxton shifted into his bear and made Peter squeal.
Laila chuckled, âheâs all right, little one,â she soothed.
âCan you hear me, sweets?â
His voice was a bit rougher, but it was Paxtonâs voice.
âYes, I can hear you,â she said with a smile.
Paxton sniffed her, then licked her cheek.
âPaxton!â Laila said with a laugh as she wiped her cheek.
Park chuckled and shook his head.
âSorry, sweets. Your scent is strong when Iâm in bear form. You just smell soooo good. I canât help myself.â
Laila chuckled, âwell, try.â
He licked her again, and she squealed as she pushed him back from her.
With a roar of laughter, Paxton shifted back.
âYou should all stay here and leave in the morning,â Vectore said out of the blue.
âI want to go home.â
Laila looked down at Peter. âWe should take Peter home while itâs still light outside.â
Vectore nodded, âgood idea.â
They headed out of the cave, and Park stopped Vectore at the opening.
âWhat about the other gift?â Park asked the Shaman.
Vectore looked at him. âIt may come out on its own, or she may only receive the one.â
Park nodded. âShould we keep an eye open for the second gift?â
Vectore shrugged, âdoesnât matter. Sheâs still your queen and the Mother of the future Kings.â
~ð¾~
They found Peterâs family easy enough. Laila kissed his little head then set him on the ground with his family.
âMama, I got to be with the queen!â Peter said excitedly.
Peterâs mother looked at him then up at Laila. âThank you.â
âNot a problem,â Laila said with a smile then watched as the mother rabbit herded her little ones underground.
âThat was so cute,â Riley said as she moved to stand beside Laila.
Laila smiled at her best friend. âYes, it was. I hope to see Peter again someday.â
âLetâs get back to the cave,â Paxton said as he placed his arm over Lailaâs shoulders. âIt will be dark soon.â
They made their way back to the cave and slept on pelts on the floor of the cave.
~ð¾~
âYou should have worded it better!â
Laila slowly opened her eyes. Who was hollering?
âI said, Iâm sorry.â
She recognized Vectoreâs voice.
âDo you know what itâs like to find your children missing?!â
Laila recognized Mekhiâs voice. Why were they arguing, and what were they arguing about?
âNo,â Vectore said, âactually I donât.â
âMy mate almost had a heart attack. I sent a message out to her, I just hope she gets it. Or Sheâll worry about what might have happened to us.â
âI hadnât realized the spell would be so literal,â Vectore said. âAnd I surely didnât anticipate that both would be triggered at the same time.â
Laila moved out from between Park and Paxton and went in search of Vectore and her Osprey.
âWhatâs going on?â She asked when she found them.
Vectore looked over at her. âDid we wake you?â
She nodded.
âIâm sorry, Laila. I forgot that you could hear me.â
Laila smiled at Mekhi. âItâs all right. So, what are you arguing about?â
Vectore sighed, and Mekhi shrieked.
âShe should know.â
Vectore nodded, âshe should. And I should bond you to her now that sheâs the queen.â
âBond... What?â Laila asked.
Vectore smiled at her. âWe knew you were the future queen before the twins did.â
âHow?â She asked, stunned.
âBecause of how you took care of Mekhi and the other animals, not to mention the fact that you know an animalâs true name,â Vectore said.
âIâll wake Avel and Nova.â
Laila watched Mekhi leave the small room.
âWe should wake the twins; they should hear this too,â Vectore said as he led her from the room.
They woke the boys, and everyone gathered in the enchantment room.
âWhatâs going on?â Paxton asked groggily.
âThere is something you all need to know,â Vectore said, pointing to the couches.
Laila sat on the couch, and the twins sat on either side of her.
Vectore sat on the couch across from them, and the Ospreys situated themselves on the back of the couch behind the Shaman.
âWhere to start,â Vectore said as he tapped his finger against his chin.
âHow about the beginning,â Paxton said.
Vectore nodded, âIâll start from when a beautiful nature-loving veterinarian saved the life of a rare black and white Osprey.â
Park and Paxton looked at Laila then back at Vectore.
âI guess you both know that Mekhi stayed with her for a couple of years before he disappeared.â
The twins nodded.
âWell, he came to me and told me about her. I sent several other animals to her, and they all reported the same. She was definitely the future queen.â
âWhy didnât you tell us that youâd found her?â Park asked.
âYeah. That would have been helpful,â Paxton said with a scowl.
Vectore chuckled âbecause you needed to find her on your own to form your bond.â
Park looked at his brother, and Paxton shrugged. They both know that if they hadnât found her on their own, their bond with her wouldnât be as strong as it is.
âMekhi was going to return to Laila, but then he met his mate. Instead of returning to Laila, I asked them to move far away.â
âBut why?â Laila asked with a cry. She had missed her beloved Osprey.
âBecause Mekhi volunteered to be your guardian, and he couldnât be near you until the twins found you.â
Laila looked at Mekhi. âMy guardian?â
âYes. I hated leaving you,â Mekhi said as he tilted his head to one side and watched Laila.
âI needed to give up a few years with you, to gain forever.â
