Chapter 44
Amidst all the pushing and shoving, someone must have tripped over a cord or something, because suddenly, there was this loud thud and down came a piece of equipment.
And it just had to land right on Markâs chest.
Mark was coughing his lungs out. He was faking it to begin with, but after that hit, how could he keep up the act?
Markâs eyes flew open and he started fiddling with the medical device on top of him, âHey, give me a hand here, get it offâ¦â
The thing didnât look that big, but man, it was heavy, and Mark couldnât budge it on his own!
Shela hurried over to help. âDad!â
âIâm being squashed, Mark complained, âIf that thing had hit my face, Iâd be a goner!â
Mark sounded full of hot air did he really seem like someone on deathâs door from a stroke?
Shela was frantic, shooting him looks that could have pulled a muscle in her eye.
Finally, Mark caught on and quickly laid back down, feigning weakness, âOuch, that hurts, doctor⦠quick, get a doctor in hereâ¦â
Shela played along, hamming it up. âDad, you just woke up, take a moment to breathe!â
âMr. Ward, youâre awake, Letitia chimed in, feigning concern, âThatâs a relief, I was scared to death something bad might happen to you!â
â1,1â
âShela said your condition was getting worse, but I didnât buy it. Youâre usually fit as a fiddle, so I came to check on you. Look at you, awake all on your own, no need for surgery, and no need for my blood.â Letitia had said her piece.
Mark and Shela exchanged looks, speechless.
Letitia grinned. Take care and rest up, Mr. Ward. Those health supplements you bought, save âem for yourself.ââ
âDid these two really think they could get rid of my kid by playing sick? Dream on!â Letitia thought, âIâm no pushover!â
âRight, Iâll go get the doctor, Letitia announced, âHang tight.â She turned and left the ICU.
Mark was grinding his teeth, fuming!
Who wouldâve thought Letitia would be so crafty, barging in and waking him up!
Shela was fuming too, but with Elgin still around, she couldnât make a scene, âMr. Ramirez, I think⦠I think my dadâs going to be fine.â
Elginâs gaze was icy as he looked at her, sharp as a blade.
âMr. Ramirez, donât look at me like that, Iâm⦠Iâm scaredâ¦â Shela tried to play the coquette, reaching for his arm, but Elgin brushed her off.
âDo you think Iâm that easy to fool?â
Shela turned pale, âNo, Mr. Ramirez, my dad really is sick!â
âSo youâre still going to keep acting even after Letitia blew your cover?â
Elgin was sharp as a tack! The moment Mark woke up, he had figured it all out. His eyes narrowed dangerously. âYou made the whole thing up just to keep taking Letitiaâs blood.â
âYou shouldnât have played me.â Elginâs presence was overwhelming, his face a mask of ice. âEnough nonsense!â
Shela quickly tried to make amends, âMr. Ramirez, Iâm sorry, I didnât mean to hide it from you, my mistake, I wonât dare do tagain
Elgin couldnât stand to look at her, snorted coldly, and walked out.
Mr Ramirez! Shela chased after him, nearly getting her face smacked by the closing door.
âMr. Ramirez, donât be mad at me!â she yelled. But Elgin didnât look back.
âThis is it, Dad,â Shela said, âweâve shot ourselves in the foot!â
At the hospital entrance, Letitia was already waiting by the car.
Elgin strade over, glancing at her, âYou finally got something right.â
âIf i hadnât smartened up, I mightâve been dead.â
âHow could a few vials of blood kill you?â
It would kill my baby. Letitia silently replied to herself.
âI canât just be some free, mobile blood bank, getting my blood drawn every day,â she said aloud.
Elgin got into the car, his face grim.
He rushed over in the middle of the night, only to find a farce.
âMust be a real bummer, being played like that, Letitia said. âToo bad you canât do much about Shela, sheâs the apple of your eye. If it were me, youâve killed me 10 times already.â
âShut up
But Letitia boldly pressed her forehead against his, âHow about you find a psychic for yourself?â
âWhat for?â
âTo get them to check if Shela put some kind of spell on you and break it.â
He brushed her hand off forcefully. With his status and position, he really shouldnât have fallen for Shela. But her timing was too perfect, not to mention he had made his promise to her.
So, even though he was repulsed, he had no choice but to accept. That wonderful night felt like a dream.
Letitiaâs mood finally lifted a bit, her baby was safe.
Silently she vowed, baby, Mommy will protect you with everything Iâve got, I wonât give up as long as thereâs a sliver of hopel
Before bed, Letitia took another dose of her pregnancy-preserving medication.
For the next few days, the butler had the kitchen whip up blood-nourishing foods for Letitia to build her strength.
Elgin said nothing, simply avoiding those dishes.
Letitia seized the opportunity to eat, worried that Elgin might suddenly decide to scrap the menu on a whim.
With the food supplements and medication, Letitiaâs vitality gradually returned, her complexion rosier
One morning, Elgin entered the dining room and took his seat at the head of the table.
He picked up his coffee, glanced over the food on the table, and his face turned sour, âButler!â
âYes, Mr. Ramirezâ
He pushed the plate away, âWhatâs all this? Are they even edible?â
The butler was in a tight spot. âThese arenât from our kitchen.â
âPhedraâs doing?â
âNo, itâs Hawley, the butler replied. âHe wanted to make sure you were well-nourished.â
Elgin pursed his lips.
âThese are all ingredients that are good for a manâs energy..â
Chapter 44
âEnough!â Elginâs face was as dark as burnt toast.
Letitia kept her head down, struggling to hold back laughter, nearly burying her face in her bowlâ¦
He finally had a taste of his own medicine!
Looks like in the Ramirez family, only Hawley could keep him in check!
âDump it,â Elgin spoke up. âRight now!â
The butler glanced at the servant not too far off, who was the old manâs guys, keeping a watchful eye.
Elgin remembered that too, which only added to his irritation
Catching Letitia smirking at the chaos, he put on a stone-cold face and thrust the Rocky Mountain Oysters towards her,
âLetitia.â
âHuh?â she looked up, her face still wearing the remnants of her smirk.
âEat it.â
Letitia was speechless.
âWhatâs the matter? Werenât you looking to get a boost for health?â Elgin raised an eyebrow. âHereâs your chance to load
âOh, how embarrassing. Thatâs a token of grandpaâs affection for you.â
âJust eat it when I
say so!â
