Chapter 26: Caring

Cove's POV

2 weeks later....

The past few weeks have been pretty boring. Tutoring with Brad went the same as last time, and after that he continued to completely ignore me.

I don't understand how he can go from being super flirty and touchy, to running away every time I enter the same room as him. Oh well, at least I got $90 and ice cream from River out of it.

Anyways, today is Saturday and I'm so exited for the upcoming week. It's student government election week, and Leah is running for Vice President!

Right now Emma and Sydney are coming over so that we can make Leah some signs. Lizzy can't make it because she's grounded for who knows what, but she said she'll make the voting booth.

It's kinda tradition in our school for the friends of whoever's running to make the signs and stuff. We did it last year when Leah was running for freshman representative, and it was super fun!

Ding! The doorbell rang. Unlike Leah, they actually knock or ring the doorbell instead of just barging in. I slipped on my shoes and ran downstairs.

I opened the door and sure enough, there stood Sydney. She lead me to Emma's car since she's the only one out of us who can drive.

Soon I will learn how to drive though, then there'll be three of us in our friend group who can drive.

We hopped in and Emma started driving towards where target and Office Depot are located. We're going to get our supplies there since they're right next to each other.

"So which color theme should we go with?" Sydney asks.

"I was thinking turquoise and purple, since turquoise is one of our school colors and Leah likes purple."

"Oh okay, that works."

We arrived quickly and decided to go to target first for the poster boards and glitter.

"Okay let's split up, I'll go look for the poster board, Cove you get the glitter and Emma you can start looking for some other decorations to put on the signs, sound good?"

We nodded and went our separate ways. I headed towards the craft section since that's where the glitter will probably be.

I passed a whole bunch of ribbons, string, glue, pipe cleaners and much more before I finally found the glitter section.

There's not much to chose from, so I grabbed the one of the purple containers and a turquoise one. I wanted to maybe add a few different splashes of color, but the only remaining colors are brown and orange.

Happy with my selection, I headed back to the front to wait for the others so that we can check out all together.

As I went to sit on a bench, I noticed a small Starbucks in the front. Emma and Sydney might take a while, so maybe I should get us all drinks!

Plus, there's absolutely no line, I can just go up and order! I stood up and went over to the counter.

"Hi, welcome to Starbucks, how can I help you?" A girl who looks to be in her early twenties asks. I ordered all of our favorite drinks and paid with cash.

A few minutes later, our drinks were ready so I grabbed them and went back to the bench where Emma is now sitting.

I took a sip out of my Iced Dirty Chai Latte before handing Emma her Smocked Buttercup Latte. She smiled and also took a sip.

"Thanks Cove, you're the best!"

"No problem, what did you get?" I asked. She suddenly became exited and ditched her drink for a plastic target bag. I guess she already paid.

"Look! I found this really cool paper circle confetti and these small origami flowers!" She exclaimed.

"That's super cool, I just got some glitter but I haven't checked out yet, I was waiting for you guys."

"Oh that's okay, Sydney should be done soon. I saw her just a few minutes ago and she said that she's almost ready."

"Oh there you guys are!" A familiar brunette yelled. Just on time.

"Shhh," I whispered.

"Sorry, I just got a little excited. Do want me to check out your stuff?"

"Sure, wait I got you Starbucks!" I smiled and raised her cup up. She took it and the glitter from me with a smile.

"Thanks, okay I'll be right back." We nodded as she walked over to the self check out a few meters away.

I took another long sip from my cup while we waited. Suddenly, I got a very intense burning pain in my stomach.

"Ow," I groaned.

"You okay Cove?" Asked Emma as she looked at me with concern in her eyes.

"Yeah, I'm fine, just a stomach ache."

She looked at me warily before nodding and turning away. I sighed a breath of relief when the burning finally went away.

I hope it's not what I think it is.

Soon, after about 2 minutes, Sydney came back. "Okay I don't think we really need to go to the other store anymore. I think we have everything."

"Yeah, let's just go," I agreed, wanting to get home as soon as possible just in case it is what I think it is.

Sydney nodded and we went back to Emma's car. We all got in and started the drive back.

We quickly arrived to my house and I ran straight up to the bathroom after unlocking the door and telling the others to get started without me.

I shut the door and sat on the toilet lid, then checked. Yep, it's definitely here.

I spent a few minutes getting "situated," then went back downstairs and quickly warmed up a heating pad.

After it got to a nice temperature, I grabbed some markers, pens and pencils from the office before heading back to Sydney and Emma.

When I finally got back to the living room, both of their heads snapped up and their eyes filled with remorse when they noticed my heating pad.

"Aww man, that sucks Cove. Are you feeling alright? If your not feeling up to it, we can finish on our own, I totally understand," Sydney rambled.

"No, no guys I'm fine," I quickly rushed out as I scrambled to sit on the floor. I don't want them to do everything just because Mother Nature decided to pay a visit.

"If you say so, although we'd totally understand if you need to take any breaks," Emma mumbled.

I nodded and gave them an encouraging smile. I'm okay, even if my insides are not.

We spent the next hour and a half around joking around and listening to music while we decorated the signs. We had to move outside for the glitter because I didn't want to get it all over the floor.

I smiled as we stood up and looked over the four finished posters laying on the ground.

One says "Vote Leah Black for Vice President, isn't it evident?" And it has lots of glitter. I found some black glitter in a drawer so that's the main color for that poster.

Another one says "Vote Leah black or don't come back!" Yeah, that one was Sydney's idea.

The remaining two simply just say "Vote Leah Black for Vice President!" They're both decorated with lots of flowers and confetti.

"I think we did good ladies, how about a snack before you guys go?" I suggested.

"Sure thing Cove, but only if we can have some strawberries," Emma replied.

"Of course, I'll be right back." I went to the kitchen and washed some strawberries from the fridge, then cut them in half and put them on three separate plates.

"Here you guys go, do you want to eat outside?" I asked. It's a pretty nice day, although it's a little cold.

"Sure," the both said. I nodded and slipped on a sweater before following the out. We sat down on the stairs and ate in silence.

"Okay y'all, I have to get going before my parents blow my phone up," Sydney announced as she stood up and handed me her empty plate.

"That's my cue, I'm her ride. It was nice hanging out with you Cove, see you on Monday?" Emma asks.

"Yeah, see you guys later," I responded. We all hugged before they went to Emma's car and drove off.

I guess it's just me and my painful cramps, all on our own.

As soon as I got in and put the plates away, my phone started ringing. I picked it up, River.

"Hello?"

"Hi baby"

"Hi River, what are you doing?"

"I'm just got home from the gym, I'm about to shower but I wanted to talk to you first."

"Oh that's cool! I just finished making posters with my friends, we were-" I cut myself off when a weird sound emitted from my stomach and a fiery pain shot up my side.

I groaned and fell into my couch, clutching my stomach. I forgot that River's still on the other end until he spoke.

"Are you okay baby? That didn't sound very good, do you need me to come over?" He asked, concern evident in his voice.

"I'm okay River, thank you. I just have a really bad stomach ache because.... well just lady problems."

"Oh okay, can I still come over though? I don't want you to be alone, especially if you're not feeling good."

"Of course, I'm not going anywhere. Just knock when you get here," I replied.

"Okay, I'll be there as soon as I can, do you need any medicine or anything?"

"Nope, thanks though."

"Okay, see you in a bit," he said before hanging up. I sighed and tossed my phone to the other end of the couch.

Grrrrr. Shut up stupid stomach, I get it.

After an hour of laying on my back and watching TV, there was finally a knock on the door. I jumped up and bolted to the door, swinging it open with a little too much force.

The stood River, clad in some dark grey sweats and a basic black shirt. He looks good, really good.

I'm simply wearing a light shirt with my sweater still over it and some soft grey shorts

He's held a whole box of chocolates.

"I didn't really know what to get you, but I heard that girls really like chocolate during their time of the month."

"It's good River, thank you!" I let him in and we both sat on the couch. I tore open the box as soon as he handed it to me and immediately stuffed two balls of chocolate in my mouth.

"Mmm, I feel better already."

He smiled and pulled me so that I'm laying down with my head on his lap.

"What do you want to do baby? We can do whatever you want."

"Hmm, I don't feel like moving one bit so does TV sound okay?"

"Of course baby, what do you want to watch?"

"Netflix. How about Grey's Anatomy?"

"Sounds good," he mumbled as he grabbed the remote and flicked it on. I turned my head to face the TV as soon as I heard it come on.

"Have you ever seen this show?" I asked. I'm currently on the 6th season, but I don't think it really matters.

There's new patients every episode, so as long as you don't really care about character development and their relationships, you don't need to know much in order to understand.

"Nope but I heard that it's really good," he answered while softly running his fingers through my hair.

"It is, it's amazing! The injuries and surgeries look really realistic. I think I might want to become a doctor or a surgeon when I grow up."

Ever since I was little, I knew that I wanted to help people for a living. I know that medical school is really hard, but I love challenging myself.

"Really? I think that you'd make a great doctor. Doctor Bentley."

"Or doctor Smith," I heard him whisper at the end. My heart swole when those words came out of his mouth. He thinking of marrying me in the future, far future, but still in the future.

"Doctor Smith sound good to me," I whispered, looking deep into his dark brown eyes. They're so dark that you could consider them black.

"Sounds good to me too," he whispered back. A look of adoration swirled in his eyes as he leaned down to kiss me deeply.

A thing about me is that I've always been able to read people's emotions. Whether it's through their eyes or through their facial expressions, I can always tell what people are feeling. And I love it.

I kissed him back with as much passion and lovingness that anyone could ever possibly put into a single kiss.

I don't even need to look at his face to understand what he's feeling, I can feel it all through the was he moves his lips against mine.

He's feeling happy, exited almost. He's feeling affectionate, determined, considerate; and most of all, he's feeling lucky as hell.

"I am so f*cking happy that you are mine Cove. All mine. And I'm all yours," he mumbled against my lips.

"I'm so f*cking happy that you are mine as well. And that I'm all yours," I replied.

River frowned and pulled away from my lips, making me pout.

"Baby don't curse, and especially don't say f*ck," he practically growled.

"But you say f*ck all the time!" I whined. River's face grew serious and at that moment, I knew I messed up big time.

He roughly flipped us over so that he's hovering over me with his arms caging me in.

"Babygirl, I'll say this one more time. Do. Not. Curse. Got it?"

His voice was husky and left no room for argument. The way he didn't break eye contact the whole time turned me on more then I've ever been before.

I nodded vigorously as an answer to his question.

"Words baby," he reprimanded. That's all it took for something wet fill my underwear. And I'm not talking about blood.

"Yes, I won't curse anymore," I answered while slightly adjusting my hips so that I'd be more comfortable with the new thing in my underwear.

He smirked when he realized what happened and moved his lips to lightly bite my ear.

"Did I make you wet babygirl?"

"N-no," I lied. Darn it! Why'd I have to stutter?

"Well I think you're lying," he husked. The feeling of his breath fanning over my ear made me squirm.

"Fine," I mumbled. He smirked and easily pulled us both back up to our original position.

"It's okay baby, there's nothing to be ashamed of," he said. And we're back to the kind and caring River, although I'm starting to like the other River too.

I huffed and turned back to watch the show. At this point I have no idea what's going on, but I'll pretend just so that I can avoid this conversation.

"Oh don't be like that, it's fine. Perfect actually!" He continued to tease me.

"Oh don't feel so special, it's just the extra hormones that are making me like this!" I whined.

"Mhm, and the sky is rainbow."

"Stop it! I'm serious." I tried to give him my best glare, but he just laughed at me.

"And I'm serious too, it's okay baby. It's fine. It's normal. There's nothing wrong with getting wet."

"Ugh let's just stop talking about it, that never happened," I groaned.

"Okay, whatever you say doctor Cove," he replied, leaning down to place a tender kiss on the tip of my nose.

"That's right Captain River. I'm going to call you captain now because you curse like a sailor!"

River laughed and shook his head. His laughter brings me joy, and I feel accomplished that I was the one to cause it.

"If I'm a captain, then that means that I'd have to leave you behind while I travel the world, looking for me booty!"

I bursted out laughing at his terrible impression of a pirate. He looked at me "offended" and crossed his arms.

"What? Like you can do any better, I'd like to see you try!"

"No you're right, how could I ever top that?"

"Yeah, that's what I thought," he un-crossed his arms and pulled me back to him. During my laughing fit, I somehow managed to roll to the other end of the couch.

When I finally calmed down and got my breathing back to normal, I turned around only to see the episode finishing and credits filling the screen.

"Ugh, you made me miss like the whole episode River!" I groaned. He sighed and turned me around to face him.

"Well don't you think what we did was much better?" He asked, briefly motioning to my area.

"I thought we agreed not to talk about that anymore River."

"Oh that's right Doctor Cove, I forgot. It's just too amazing to ignore, you're too amazing to ignore."

"Rules are rules Captain. Do I need to go over the rules again?" I asked.

"Sure thing Doctor, I think I forgot."

"Okay then; rule number 1, no more mentioning that. Rule number 2, I'm not allowed to curse." River smirked when I said that one.

"Rule number 3, the sky is in fact not rainbow. And rule number 4, don't forget the rules." I smiled victoriously once I finished.

"Got it Doctor, I won't forget."

"Good Captain, now let's get something to eat because I'm starving."

He nodded and pulled us both up on our feet. We silently walked to the kitchen and River started looking through the fridge.

"Does a ham sandwich sound good?" He asked with his back still turned.

"Sure, as long as you put lettuce," I answered. He nodded again and took out all of the ingredients.

I tried to go over and help him, but he shook his head and set me on the counter.

"You just be pretty and watch," he mumbled. I blushed and swung my legs in order to distract myself from what he said.

Soon he finished making the sandwiches and he handed me mine. I ate a few bites while he put everything away, then he sat down next to me and started to eat his.

"It's good River, thank you," I complimented.

"I'm glad you like it baby, you're welcome," he responded. I nodded absentmindedly as I took another bite.

I didn't take long for us to both finish eating and I set our plates in the sink while River stood behind me.

Out of no where, he swept me up and ran to the couch, swiftly plopping down with me landing on top of him.

"River, what was that for!" I laughed. He simply shrugged with a small smirk and leaned back against the cushion.

His face quickly turned to one of concern when I suddenly jerked forward and clutched my stomach with both hands.

I cried out in pain and tightly closed my eyes. 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1. I started to count down from 10 over and over again until the pain went away. It helps focus my mind and something other than how much my stomach is hurting.

"Baby what happened? Are you okay, what hurts?" I heard River's concerned voice ask but I couldn't answer. I'm in too much pain.

"Cove please tell me what's wrong so I can help you!" River begged. His voice sounds so desperate and upset, I have to answer him.

"I-it hurts," I managed to say.

"Your stomach?" I nodded and he sighed deeply.

"I don't know what to do, have you taken any medicine? I can go get you some. Or do you want me to reheat your heating pad? Please tell me to do something."

"I-I can't take any medicine that helps periods, I'm allergic. Maybe can you get me some pain killers?" I suggested.

"Yes! Yes of course, I'll be right back baby." With that, he left.

I can only hope that he finds where the medicine cabinet is, and that he finds it soon.

River's POV

As soon as Cove told me what she needs, I ran up the stairs and into the bathroom. I'm assuming that her medicines are in here.

It upsets me that I can't really do much to help her. I just want to take away every ounce of pain that she feels, but I can't do that. I just hope that the medicine will make her feel better.

I searched through the top shelf of a cabinet above her sink, and sure enough I found some painkillers.

I made the decision to bring down the whole bottle because I don't know how many she needs to take.

I found Cove in the exact same position as before, quietly counting down from ten repeatedly.

If she wasn't in pain, I would have found it pretty cute.

"Baby, how many can you take?" I asked.

"T-two," she whispered.

"Only two, are you sure?" Two doesn't seem like a lot, especially compared to how many I usually take.

She took a deep breath and nodded her head. I shrugged to myself and filled up a glass of water, then took two pills from the bottle.

"Here," I tilted her head up and stuck the pills in her mouth, then brought the cup to her lips. She took a long sip of water and swallowed slowly.

"Good girl," I praised with a smile.

After setting everything on the counter, I sat down next to Cove and pulled her to me.

"It should kick in in about 20 minutes okay?" She nodded and laid her head on my chest.

"I know it hurts baby, just take some deep breaths. I'm right here." She followed my instructions as I gently rubbed her back.

"Good," I said softly. She sighed and pushed herself further into my grasp.

"I'm so sorry baby, if I could take the pain away I would," I cooed while stroking her hair.

"R-River I kinda want to go to sleep," she whispered after a few minutes.

"Then let's go to your room so that you can sleep, or you can sleep here. Whatever you want to do, it's your choice."

"O-okay but you can't leave alright?" She said, giving me the most innocent doe eyes possible.

"Of course I'll stay, do you want to lay in your bed?" She nodded in response.

"Okay, do you need anything else before we go?" I asked.

"No, thank you," she answered. I smiled and stood up. When she didn't make any move to get up, I looked at her questionably.

"Um River, can you please carry me? I-I don't think I can walk." She put her arms up and looked at me anxiously.

"Of course baby." I gently lifted her in my arms and carried her to her room. Once I got in, I closed the door and a set her on her bed.

She crawled under the covers and looked at me expectingly. I smiled and laid down next to her, then wrapped my arms around her small frame and pulled us together.

"Close your eyes baby," I said softly. She nodded and put her head in the crook of my neck.

Just when I thought that she finally fell asleep, she spoke.

"Thank you for being here with me." Her voice was below a whisper, but I still heard her loud and clear.

"You don't have to thank me baby, I'll always be here for you. Always."

I felt her smile against my neck before we both finally fell asleep.
