"Boo!" The familiar voice echoed from my right and made me drop my books on the floor.

The papers from my history project flew around and I crouched down to collect them. Again like always, Stefano tried to ruin my day.

I didn't turn my head to him. The sight of his black boots caught my eyes but I stayed silent as I picked up my books.

Piece by piece, I got all of them and stood up.

My locker was still open and I shoved some of them inside.

A hand landed on the one next to me and made me slightly jump and close my eyes shut.

"What's up?" Stefano spoke and leaned forward. I tried to get away as much as possible.

I won't let him destroy my day. Tomorrow on Wednesday was my birthday and he was not going to ruin my mood with his stupid jokes.

When I didn't answer him, he spoke again. "Why so quiet today, bella?" I wanted to roll my eyes. Why was he always messing up my name? There was a girl similar to me called Isabella. Did he think I was her?

Jerk.

What was his deal anyway? For the past year, he has been like an annoying fly that I wanted to smack on the wall.

"Let me see what you have here." He extended his hand and grabbed one of the invitations I prepared for my birthday. There were only three of them and all of them were handmade by me. It was one of my hobbies. Creating with papers and drawing.

It was pathetic I know but for the very first time in my life, I was going to invite friends for my birthday.

The three girls I was doing my history project with, were the closest to friends that I had.

I never had anyone before. Until now. Well, I hope they see me as their friend.

"Birthday party..." Stefano read every little word out loud. Mocking me.

Tears threatened to well up in my eyes with each passing second.

"Really? Are you a child?" I snatched the card away from him and finally looked up at him. For someone who was very attractive, he sure knew how to be an asshole.

Stefano had dark hair that was longer on top and shorter on the side. His amber eyes shone with each one of his looks and he was towering over me with his strong build.

There were a couple of small tattoos on his fingers and his intoxicating cologne mixed with the smell of cigarettes hit my nose as soon as he invited my space.

A smirk played on his lips as he leaned his hand on top of my locker and glanced down at me.

"You have a birthday?" His eyebrows lifted up mockingly. I didn't say anything but rather stayed quiet. It's what I always did. I knew not to mess with anyone.

I still bear scars from middle school. I turned around and began placing my last couple of papers in the locker.

"You're way too cute like this. With a frown on your face." He whispered behind me, his fingers twirling a piece of my hair. His breath fanned my skin and I pushed myself further into the metal locker.

I hated how much I couldn't talk back and tell him to back off.

I hated it.

I quickened my movements and soon shut the locker. I adjusted the strap of my bag and turned around. Stefano dug into his pocket and took out a cigarette. He placed it between his teeth and winked before saying goodbye.

"See you, bella." He shouted before exiting through the glass doors.

Trying to push his words away, I walked down the hallways. The death grip on the cards made my hands shake.

The anxiety was eating me up until I noticed the girls. Athena, Lily, and Gianna. All three of them were standing by the restroom door and were talking amongst themselves.

I closed the distance between us and took a deep breath before, I spoke.

"Hi!" I said almost in a whisper.

Gianna turned around first and ranked her gaze over my outfit. I didn't have the perfect style like them but I was trying.

I had a summer dress that reached down to my knees and a thin cropped cardigan over it. My brown hair was down and only half of it up.

"Hii Evelyn!" She smiled and then Athena and Lily turned around as well.

While Athena and Gianna had blond hair, Lily had wine red one. She changed her hair constantly.

They were beautiful with their makeup done immaculately.

"I... I have a birthday tomorrow and I wanted to invite all of you on Saturday to my party." My heartbeat was racing like crazy because of my stupid anxiety.

Why couldn't I be normal?

"Who else is invited?" Lily asked.

"Just us. Kind of like a girl's night I guess." I grinned and felt my cheeks get red in embarrassment.

"I have these for you." I took out the invitations and handed them to the girls.

Athena's smile didn't reach her eyes but nevertheless, she took it and threw it in her bag. They all took them and smiled.

"We have to go now. We'll be there."

"Really? I'll be waiting." I clasped my hands together and my heart beamed with happiness. It was going to be my first birthday party ever and I'll have to start preparing from today.

"Yeah..." Athena mumbled and they left.

Contain your happiness, Evelyn, you finally have friends.

••••

"Are you sure, honey?" Mom asked after I told her I didn't need help.

Today was Saturday and in a few hours, my friends were going to arrive.

"I'm sure mom. I'll manage everything on my own." Both my parents were super excited that I was finally making friends, that's why they let me know that they were going out and I was going to have the whole place on my own.

She kissed my forehead and they exited through the front door.

I have placed a table and a few chairs outside in our backyard. I have also decorated everything with fairy lights and the cake was already made.

After I checked the snacks, I hurried to my bedroom and headed to the closet.

For today I have bought a dress that wasn't really my style but it's definitely something the girls would wear.

It was in a pale yellow color and reached mid-thigh. There were no straps and the cute dress was body con and showed all of my curves which I never really exposed with any of my clothes.

But it was going to be just us girls so I shouldn't really feel insecure.

I tied my hair in a ponytail and then did my makeup as best as I could.

When I checked my phone it was almost 8 pm and I practically ran downstairs.

It was warm outside so I sat on one of the chairs and waited for my guests. They should be here soon.

The screen on my phone lit and Dad's name popped up. I pressed the green button and brought the device to my ear.

"Yes, dad?"

"How are you dear? Did you set up everything?"

"Mhmm I did. They should be here soon. Did you arrive at the restaurant?"

"Yeah, we just did. I left you money if you girls want to go to the city as well."

"You didn't have to dad. But thank you." I said and chewed on my lip. I don't know what I did to deserve parents like them.

They knew how much anxiety I had and how much it meant to them that I was finally making friends.

We said goodbye and I placed the phone on the table.

The cake I was making the whole day was in the fridge. It was with white frosting and strawberries on top.

I have also made drinks from freshly squeezed oranges and made sure to make homemade snacks.

Our backyard was small but it looked cute now decorated with fairy lights.

I wandered my eyes all around and let out a sigh.

Are they gonna make fun of me? I was turning eighteen and maybe this was a bit too much.

How do people celebrate their eighteenth birthday anyway?

I bit my lip and wiped my sweaty palms off my dress.

I looked at the phone and it was already half past eight. Maybe there's traffic so they can't make it on time. I used that opportunity to check the cake and the other stuff I had in the fridge.

Then I retouched my makeup and went outside again.

Everything was in its place and that's why I had to restrain myself from touching them and accidentally messing something up.

Again I sat on the chair and waited. I tilted my head back and gazed at the stars that were starting to appear. It was still not completely dark but the sun was set.

I waited and waited and waited.

The clock struck nine but they were still not here.

I looked down at my nails and admired the small strawberries I drew on them for a while.

The backyard got completely covered in dark and I checked my phone again.

Tears started to sting my eyes and I sniffed, trying to push them back.

I'm sure they'll be here. They said they would. I wrapped my hands around me and lowered my head down.

It was almost 10 pm and I was still alone waiting like the pathetic person I am. Just when I thought that I was finally going to celebrate my birthday with friends other than just my parents.

Wetness fell down from my eyes and the salty tears reached down my lips.

A sob broke through my mouth and I covered my face with my hands.

Was something wrong with me? There must be something that people don't like.

Because why can't I ever make friends?

I stayed on the chair, tears staining my face as I cried. I never cried a lot but realizing that nobody actually wanted to be my friend hurt. A lot.

I tried to catch my breath when I heard movements at the fence on my left side. Was it them?

I stood up and just as I was about to make a step a guy with a leather jacket and black pants jumped in our yard.

He pushed his hair back and walked towards me.

Stefano.

"What are you doing here?" My voice trembled with each word from all of the crying I did.

He smirked as he made his way towards me but soon that same smirk fell when he closed the distance between us.

I looked up at him and wrapped my hands around me.

"Happy birthday!" He said but it was not the same annoying voice he used whenever he speaks with me.

I didn't say anything but rather stared at him.

Did he come here to make fun of me? Well, he had a lot of material for today. Maybe he was right to mock me every day.

And he was probably right to call me childish. I mean what eighteen year old would celebrate their birthday like this?

Everyone probably goes to clubs or something.

His eyes traveled from my outfit to the decorations and then untouched food and drinks.

"Did you make the food? Looks really good." My eyebrows furrowed at what he said.

I sniffed again and wiped my face with the back of my hands.

"Yes," I mumbled.

"Okay then let's eat. Are you gonna throw all of this away? I don't think so." He grabbed my hand and intertwined our fingers in the process. He led us to the table and we sat down.

He got comfortable on the chair and took one of the snacks I made. He devoured the small piece in one go and I sat there watching him eat the food I was preparing the whole day.

At least someone tried them. Even if that person was Stefano.

"Look at you. A woman with many talents." He cleaned two of the plates in less than a few minutes.

How was he able to eat this much?

My stomach growled and I extended my hand and snatched one of the goods. They really were delicious. Well, he was not lying about this.

We sat in an awkward silence while we ate all of the food and drank all of the drinks. Stefano didn't seem to be uncomfortable or awkward though. It was probably just me.

"Did you make a cake as well? I have space for one more slice." He smiled and tapped his stomach. A stomach that had six packs.

He then placed his hands on the back of the chair next to him and spread his legs while I stood up and hurried inside.

What the hell was happening and what was he doing here?

I cut two slices and placed them on plates. When I passed the mirror in the hallway, my eyes widened. My face was red and my eyes were slightly swollen.

Great.

Give him more reasons to make fun of you.

But I couldn't really care at this point.

Stefano was observing everything around him when I stepped outside. When his eyes landed on me he grinned and braced his elbows on the table.

We ate the cake as well and I leaned back. My stomach was full.

I was really here spending time with him while I was supposed to be here with the girls.

He wiped his mouth and pointed his eyes at me. "I have a birthday present for you." Huh?

My mouth parted and I looked at him confused. He got up and walked towards me. He extended his hand and waited for me to take it.

I debated for a second but did as he was expecting. When our palms touched, I looked up at him and tried to cover up the nervousness he was causing me.

"What do you say about a ride on my motorcycle?"

"No, I'm scared," I said immediately. It was dangerous and I've never done anything like that before. "Did you really get here with your bike?"

"Of course, did you think I was gonna walk for a few miles?" I wasn't really sure where he lived.

"Come on. I'll drive slow."

I sank my teeth into my lip and looked down at our joined hands. I didn't even realize they were still interlocked. He stroked his finger over my palm as he waited for my answer.

"I can't go on the bike in this dress." It was too short.

He thought for a second and then took off his leather jacket. "Here you can have this." He placed it over my shoulders and I slid my arms into the sleeves. It reached almost down to my knees.

"Better?" He stood there only in a tight black t-shirt that was stretched over his biceps.

I nodded and felt like a child wearing my parent's clothes because the jacket was too big on me. I went to lock the door and Stefano intertwined our fingers again.

We stepped outside of my backyard and there was his motorcycle. I didn't know much about them but I'm sure this one was fast.

He had two helmets and placed one over my head and then the other one for him.

He got on the bike and turned to me. I tightened the jacket over my figure and got on the motorcycle behind him.

He gently grabbed my ankles and placed my feet where they were supposed to be. My hands snaked around his waist loosely. I didn't want to make him uncomfortable.

"Like this." He said and tightened them around him. Okay then...

My body was pressed to his back and I shut my eyes tight when he started the engine. A squeak left my lips when he started driving and I pressed my body further into his.

Soon the panic that was there before started to disappear and I opened my eyes.

He surprisingly drove not so fast, just like he promised. I watched the city lights as he made his way on the hill.

I leaned my head on his back and smiled stretched on my face. Maybe my birthday wasn't going to be so bad after all.

The wind caressed my bare legs and I stayed still, enjoying the peaceful night. Stefano drove on the road by the cliff and now the buildings and houses looked miniature with the light on.

I lived life through books. It was safer like that.

But maybe this... wasn't so bad after all.

He slowed down and made a turn. We must have been driving for a while. We then started to go back.

One of his palms landed on my hands that were joined at his stomach and it stayed there while he drove down the hill.

The comforting touch made my heart flutter and my stomach clench in a weird way.

After a while my house appeared in my vision and Stefano stopped the motorcycle right where it was before.

I jumped down from my bike and took the hamlet off. The smile was still present on my face when I stood in front of Stefano.

"Thank you. I really enjoyed it." A satisfied grin formed on his plump lips and he nodded.

"Glad you did, bella." My smile fell at the name.

"My name is not Bella," I whispered.

A loud throaty chuckle rumbled through his chest and I watched him lean his head back. He ran his fingers through his hair and bit his lip.

"I don't mean it as a name." He stepped closer, our shoes touching. His cologne made me close my eyes when I felt his lips close to my ear.

"It means beautiful." His hot breath fanned my neck and I fished my hands at the sensation.

Beautiful? Wait...

My cheeks burned and I bet they coated in a crimson red colour.

His lips traveled from my ear to my cheek and he placed a light kiss dangerously close to my mouth. If I turned my head slightly he would have easily captured my lips.

My lungs burned and my heart felt like it was going to burst out of my chest.

What was even happening to me?

"Happy birthday again, Evelyn." When I opened my eyes our faces were close but he soon turned around and got on the bike. Before I could process what just happened, he left.

I watched him disappear at the speed of light.

All of a sudden a grin appeared on my lips and I covered my face with my hands.

Get yourself together.

I walked inside and ran upstairs to my room. I jumped on the bed and realized that I still had his jacket on me.
