Chapter 20: dangerous

Devina

I straighten my posture and cleared my throat as I stood in front of my boss.

My hands went behind me and I pointed my eyes at the man who was more than a father to me. Alexandro Bonetti was my boss and my protector.

Someone who gave me purpose on this world and made me the woman I am today.

At age twenty-seven, I have achieved more than I was able to dream when I was living back home.

"Saturday is the day as you know." He spoke and pulled the cigarette away from his mouth.

"Yes, boss. I do." My voice was firm and clear from any doubts or fear. I wouldn't have been able to be the person I am if those characteristics were still present in me.

"You'll meet Diana in a couple of hours and you'll see what she likes, how she acts. Try to resemble some of her personality traits." I hummed and nodded my head twice.

"Here is her file as well. But meeting her will help you a lot better." He slid a black file filled with papers on the table and pushed it towards me.

My heels clacked on the wooden floor as I took a few steps toward his desk.

I extended my hand and grabbed the documents. My red long nails scrapped over the leather file and I went back to my place.

My straight ponytail swung with each of my moves and grazed over my shoulders. I was dressed in my usual uniform that consisted of black pants and a black turtleneck. My makeup was done to perfection like every day. Red lips, my signature look.

"Is there any question Devina?" Alexandro asked and I shook my head. I knew when to talk and when to keep quiet.

"You know what do to right?"

"Yes."

I was going to kill Hades.

The head of the Callaghan family. The Irish mafia in New York.

It was what my job was about. An assassin. Growing up poor and without a mother figure, messed up my life. I was lost and dad was barely in my life.

He was there physically. Emotionally? Not so much.

At fifteen I ran from home and ended up in Alexandro's hands. He took me in and trained me to be his most valuable assassin. I knew exactly how to seduce and allure my targets and kill them without any hesitation.

Just like I'm supposed to do with my next victim. This one,... well a bit difficult given him being the head of his family.

That's why Alexandro had an excellent plan. Hades was a bachelor. He was forty yet still not married. Little strange but not unimaginable.

He wasn't exactly looking for a bride as much as I knew but Alexandro knew how to make alliances. Promise him a submissive, innocent bride.

Diana.

His brother's daughter. I have seen Diana only once in my life because she lived in France under his protection. She was fragile and maybe a bit naive. Alexandro keeps her away from everyone.

Hidden away like a little bunny. She was his only family left and I knew how much she meant to him. She was like his own daughter.

Surprisingly Hades agreed to marry her. Even though he didn't know how she looked.

That's where I come in the picture.

I'm the one who is going to marry him instead. Given that he doesn't know Diana, I'll be taking her place.

"On the wedding night, those white sheets will be covered in his blood." He said.

"I won't disappoint you, Alex."

"I know you won't." His smile made pride beam in my chest.

••••

"Good luck, Dev." Little Louis said and smirked my way. His name was opposite of what he looked like. Louis was almost 7 feet tall and my future bodyguard.

We know each other very well and I can say that I'm little annoyed with Alex's choice of bodyguard for me.

Louis and I, well we have a little history I guess. He was an attractive man and I was single lady.

"Thank you, Louis." I answered at his mocking remark.

I barely walked in this ridiculous outfit. It was something I would never wear. A creamy-white dress that flowed down to my knees, showing off my "innocence". My hair was down in soft waves and I had little to no make up.

Exactly how Diana would dress.

When I met her, I expected her to be like I imagined her but I didn't know she was that naive.

Did she really thought that Alex would let her marry the gardener? Was she that stupid? The way she talked about him made me roll my eyes. She really was out of touch with our reality.

I got into the car and Louis drove off.

I missed my heels. The shoes Diana wears are basically flats. In an ugly dark blue color.

But I had to put up with the act. I'll act submissive and gain his trust. It will be hard to act like a lost kitten around him but for two months, I'll put up with it.

Sigh of irritation left my lips that were painted in a nude lipstick and I leaned my head back on the leather seat.

Two months Devina. Just two months.

The city lights illuminated the inside of the car and I tapped my fingers on my thigh.

The restaurant was about twenty five minutes away and I opened my phone to look at the notes I wrote.

It was some information about Hades and some about Diana. I ran my fingers over the screen and I regretted removing the red nail-polish. It always gave me confident.

Louis hummed to the song playing on the radio and I chewed on my lips as I prepared for the dinner.

The restaurant we were going to was owned by Hades himself. I guess that's why he chose it.

"We'll be there in five minutes." I hummed at his words and ran a hand over my locks.

Indeed we arrived in front of our destination and Little Louis opened the door for me. He extended his hand and I grabbed his palm to steady myself.

Let's do this.

I smiled shyly as we stepped at the door. The waiter greeted us and I walked to where he showed me. Louis stayed the entrance as I made my way to my future husband.

Hades sat the table, his eyes glued to the device in his hands.

He was dressed in a dark blue suit and the few buttons on his shirt were open. I have seen pictures but seeing him in person was different.

His gaze lifted to me when he heard my shoes on the marble floor. Piercing green ones. They were very expressive and mesmerising.

At least I won't have to spend time with an ugly man. For a guy who was forty, he looked more than good.

His dark hair was pushed back. Few white strands decorated the side of his hair but made him look even better.

Maybe I had a thing for older man.

We discover new things every day.

He stood up from his seat and stalked towards me. His strong presence made everyone in the room cower their heads down.

"Welcome, Diana. Pleasure to meet you." His voice sent shivers down my spine. He had a thick Irish accent that somehow sounded alluring.

"Pleasure to meet you as well." I spoke quietly, mastering my Diana personality. I put extra blush just so I can look like I'm flustered by his presence.

We shook hands and I watched him bring my hand to his lips and place a kiss on the back of it.

He knew his way into seducing a woman I see. Not for long though.

He pulled a chair for me and I lowered myself down.

"How are you?" My eyes almost widened in surprise. I didn't expect him to ask that.

"Good. Little tired from the flight but good." I wasn't lying about this. I lived in Portugal but for my act I just got here from France.

"You live in France right?"

"Yes I do." I hated how formal I had to sit and speak.

"Qu'est-ce que tu en penses là-bas ?" I was intrigued by his French. He was good at it. Lucky for me I spoke it as well. (How do you like it over there?)

"Je l'aime très bien." I answered and a smile formed on his plump lips. (I like it very well)

"I'm impressed with your studies. Alexandro said that you have a master degree in finances. You planned to work for your family?"

"Yes I do have. I liked staying but of course I'm going to be a stay at home wife." Diana would have said this without hesitation. It was her choice though.

"I don't expect that from you. You know that right?" He lifted his eyebrow and waited for my answer.

"It's what I want. Mr. Callaghan."

"Call me Hades please. I'm your future husband after all." I nodded and grinned shyly.

"Okay, Hades."

The waiter came by and we ordered food. I pretended not to know what to eat and Hades immediately jumped to help me.

We were left alone again. By the way, the restaurant was as empty other than us two and his men all around.

"Tell me Diana, what do you think about this arrangement?"

"If my uncle thinks that this is right for me then I have no arguments about it."

"And you are willing to get into marriage with me?" Where was he going with this? I can't afford him backing away.

"I have seen pictures of you. You are very attractive man and you are head of your family. It will be a pleasure to be your wife."

"Hmm." His eyes traveled over my face and then went down from my neck to my chest. It was not one of those disgusting looks but more of an appreciative ones.

I knew I was good looking. There was not doubt in that. So the way he was staring at me, made my confidence go up.

"You are very beautiful as well." My heart skipped a beat and I fisted my dress at his comment. This is not how I was supposed to feel.

It was the single word he said. Beautiful.

It was always sexy, attractive or any other term but never beautiful.

"Thank you." Maybe the blush that appeared right now was not just my makeup.

"No need to thank me, Diana." And the reality hit me. Diana. I was Diana.

The dinner was brought to our table and we dug into the food.

Hades eyes stayed on my face the whole time and at times made me uneasy.

We talked for a bit and I tried avoiding questioning him about his family because I didn't want him getting angry and trying to break this agreement.

From what Alexandro told me, Hades killed his brother so he could take over the family. Hades was a big rival of Alex and a thorn in his eye.

That's why he wanted to eliminate him.

He asked me some stuff about France, my interests and so on.

He was surprisingly a pleasant talker. He wasn't unnecessarily loud or tried to interrupt me. He listened to every single word I said and also remembered whatever I was saying.

Maybe I got carried away and started talking about my love for photography.

I started talking about the pictures I have taken and actually showed him some on my phone.

And guess what?

He loved them. He was a weird man.

He talked about his love for birds. He apparently has a parrot that speaks. He also showed me pictures and I can say that he loved it more than anything.

The sparks his eyes held, showed that he truly cared about the animal.

"I should go now. Uncle Alex will be waiting for me."

"Of course. Sent him my greetings."

"I will."

We stood up and he placed his palm on the small of my back. He led me outside and then to my car.

His warm hand felt good on my skin. Hades walked close to me till we reached the black SUV.

I turned around to say goodbye for the last time tonight.

"Well, goodbye. I hope we'll see each again soon." I looked up at him.

His mouth turned upward and then he bit his lip. "Goodbye." He whispered as soon as he leaned down, close to my ear.

Two hands hooked around my waist and I was pulled into a hug. My arms went around his neck and I felt his lips touch my bare shoulder.

They lingered there for a while and I closed my eyes, his intoxicating cologne consuming my lungs.

We pulled away and I quickly got into the car and Louis drove off.

Hades

I watched the car drive away from the restaurant. My lips tingled from few seconds ago when they were pressed to her soft skin.

Oh how much she felt good by my side.

Dario stepped close to me and pulled a cigarette box out of his pocket. He offered me one and I took it.

I lit the small toxic stick and felt the smoke run down my throat and to my lungs.

I blew the smoke out and tilted my head back. The night was peaceful and the stars were shining above us.

"And?" Dario spoke.

I turned to him and lifted my eyebrow in question.

"She's pretty enough." I rolled my eyes and took another drag of the cigarette.

"I could care less about how she looks like. It doesn't matter at all."

"You're still up with your plan?"

"Mhmm."

He smirked and nodded. "If I was in your place I would have kept her for a while to see how she is. Maybe you could use her for a while."

I flickered the res of the cigarette at him and pushed on his chest.

"Keep your mouth shut. I'm not my dad to keep you around. One mistake and I'll put a bullet through your head." His lips sealed in a straight line and he slowly nodded.

"Go and bring me the car." He obeyed immediately and left.

I slid my hands into the pockets of my slacks and waited for him.

Little Diana.

She really thought that what I was telling her was true and that I actually care about this at all.

I'm going to be a house wife she said. Stupid girl.

You won't be a wife even for a day.

Because I was going to kill Diana and avenge my brother.
