Alexcent slammed the door, letting out a sigh as he did.
âCarol?â Pauline called out tentatively. She was still in shock after everything that had happened.
Amethyst turned to her and rushed over, pulling her friend into a tight embrace. âPauline!â she exclaimed. âIâm so glad we got here on time.â
âYou are Carol, right?â Pauline asked, laughing a little at the sudden affection.
âYes,â Amethyst said, pulling back to look Pauline over, checking to see if she was okay. âIâm so sorry Iâm late.â
Pauline tightened her grasp on Amethyst. âNo, itâs okay.â
Amethyst let a beat pass then she asked, âWhatâs going on here? Who was that man? It wasnât your ex-husband, was it?â
âNo, no.â Pauline shook her head. She looked around the mess of the room and huffed, letting go of Amethyst. âWhy donât you take a seat first and Iâll bring out some tea.â
Amethyst moved to sit then, remembering that Alexcent was with her, and beckoned him over. âPauline, this is my husband,â she introduced. âHis name is Alexcent.â
âOh, hello,â Pauline greeted, setting the table with cups and a pot of tea. âYou look familiar⦠like a clumsy version of someone I once knew.â
Amethyst let out a laugh as Alexcentâs face grew red. âLike an upgraded version of Gray?â
At that, Pauline seemed to swoon. âYes, Grayâ¦â she said dreamily. Then, she stopped, looking between Alexcent and Amethyst. âWhy did you leave Gray? Did he cheat on you with that beautiful face of his?â
Alexcent narrowed his eyes as he took a seat beside Amethyst. âYou know I can hear you, right?â
âOh, right!â Pauline exclaimed, embarrassed. âSorry. I just couldnât help but ask.â
âI get it,â Amethyst smiled. âIt might be a little confusing but⦠Iâm still married to Gray. Well, that is, Iâm married to Gray who also happens to be Alexcent⦠my husband.â
Pauline stared at her, obviously confused. âWhat?â
âItâs a long story.â
âI was cursed,â Alexcent supplied, ignoring Amethystâs confusion. âI had to work as a slave to break the cure. So, I became a slave and returned to her after I was freed.â
âOh,â Pauline said, looking a little dazed. âWell, that doesnât matter now. As long as Carol is happy, Iâm happy too.â
âAbout thatâ¦â Amethyst trailed off. When Pauline turned to look at her, she avoided her gaze. âMy name isnât actually Carol. Itâs Amethyst.â
âOh?â
âI didnât want to deceive you,â Amethyst said. âItâs just that I really thought I would have to go by Carol for the rest of my life.â
âCarolâNo, Amethyst,I donât mind,â Pauline told her. âItâs just a name. It doesnât matter.â
Amethyst let out a sigh of relief. âThank you for understanding,â she said. âI thought you would hate me for deceiving you.â
Pauline laughed. âWell, technically I lied to you too,â she said. âDid you hate me then?â
âNo!â
âExactly.â
Amethyst grinned. âI was just surprised. I didnât know you had divorced.â
Pauline nodded. âWell, it had been a while already, honestly,â she said. âBut I kept up the image of being married so men would stop hitting on me. Itâs hard to have so many people on you when youâre just trying to raise your child.â
I suspected that was the case, Amethyst thought to herself.
Pauline sat on her chair, her body tilted slightly askew as she waved everything away. âI just couldnât seem to fit into the role of the perfect wife and mother.â
âI thought you were a perfect mother,â Amethyst said, scrunching up her nose.
Pauline smiled. âThereâs no such thing.â
Amethyst was quiet for a moment. It had never occurred to her that this was what Pauline thought of herself. She couldnât help but feel bad that she had boxed her friend into this role before.
Then, she sat up stiffly. âThat man earlier,â she said. âWhat was he doing?â
âWell,â Pauline frowned. âThings around here havenât been so great lately, what with the feudal lord changing and all.â
Alexcent leaned forward upon hearing that. âThe feudal lord changed?â He grabbed a cup that Pauline had placed on the table and sipped the tea, pretending not to know anything.
âYes,â Pauline said. âThe new lord⦠Well, heâs trying to clear this whole area so he can build a resort. He hired a bunch of thugs to threaten the people in the area into selling.â
So thatâs why so many shops were boarded up, Amethyst thought. âThatâs ridiculous,â she said. âWhy would he want to build a resort here? Itâs already a wonderful place.â
âIt gets worse,â Pauline told her gravely. âHeâs trying to buy everything for dirt cheap. Itâll be hard to find a place to liveâlet alone set up another shopâwith the kind of money theyâre offering.â
âThe rich are the worst,â Amethyst groaned. âWell, then⦠lead the way to the new lord.â
Pauline gaped. âWhat?â
âI need to speak to him,â Amethyst said, already standing up.
âAsh,â Alexcent said quietly as Amethyst fumed. âHe can do whatever he wants with this land. We donât have a say here.â
Amethyst glared at him. âIt should be illegal for him to treat people so poorly,â she said. âKicking people out of their stores? Paying them next to nothing in exchange for their livelihoods? Itâs terrible! We have to stop him.â
âLeave it to me,â Alexcent said, calmly, ushering Amethyst to take a seat.
âWhat are you going to do? Kill him?â
Alexcent nodded. âThat would be the easiest solution.â
âNo,â Amethyst told him, scowling. âSee, this is why I want to handle it myself.â
âFine, then,â Alexcent said. âIâll just restrict development in this area.â
âCan you do that?â
âOf course. Itâs the edge of the Empire, so I can lock it for military use. Then, development will be restricted.â
That makes sense, Amethyst though. We wonât even have to use force.
âAnd I have the perfect person for this job,â Alexcent said.
Amethyst smiled. âAre we thinking of the same person?â
âProbably.â
Sorry, Gen.
Across the table, Pauline looked astounded at their conversation.
âListen, Paulineâ¦â Amethyst cleared her throat.
Pauline shook her head. âNo, I figured you were pretty important people,â she said. âThe ID you have has a few noble symbols on it. Did you know?â
Amethyst pondered. She hadnât really thought about it before, but her ID actually did have more than a few noble symbols on it. All thanks to Alexcent, no doubt.
Alexcent laughed as realization dawned on Amethystâs face.
âI made a really great friend,â Pauline teased.
âI would have told you everything,â Amethyst said bashfully. âBut I couldnât really write it in a letter. I wanted to tell you in person.â
Pauline waved it off. âI understand,â she said. Then, she perked up, remembering something. âErina will be home soon. Will you stay for dinner? For old timeâs sake?â
Amethyst smiled. âOf course.â
âGreat!â Pauline clapped her hands together. âErina will be so happy to see you.â
***
That night, Erina greeted Amethyst warmly. She kept Alexcent at a distance, but it was mostly because he was a stranger to her.
After dinner, Alexcent turned to Amethyst and said, âLetâs go.â
âWhere are you going?â Erina and Pauline asked in unison.
âOh, we were just thinking of staying somewhere else for the night,â Amethyst smiled. They only had two rooms in the house.
âErina can stay with me,â Pauline offered.
âNo, no, itâs okay,â Amethyst said. âWe wouldnât want to be a bother.â
Pauline sighed. âWell, if thatâs what you want,â she shrugged.
