Alexcent laughed. âYes.â
âBut how?â Amethyst looked around again, as if to check if she was dreaming.
âWhat do you mean?â Alexcent wrinkled his nose. âHave you forgotten who I am?â
Amethyst rolled her eyes at that. âOf course not,â she said. âBut is it really okay for you to use your powers like this?â
Alexcent placed his hand on Amethystâs shoulders and made her turn to look at the scenery. âItâs perfectly fine.â
Feeling the warmth of Alexcentâs hand on her, Amethyst sighed. âThank you so much for this, Alec.â
The prince smiled. âDonât mention it.â
Amethyst turned to look at him. âI was actually going to tell you that I planned on going to Hutchmoon.â
Alexcentâs brow knit together. âYou werenât planning on going alone, were you?â
âWell,â Amethyst avoided the princeâs eyes. âItâs pretty far and youâre busy preparing for the congress.â
âIâm glad I brought you here, then,â Alexcent said. âBecause there is no way I wouldâve let you go by yourself.â
Just as Amethyst was supposed to chuckle, her eyes grew wide at the sight of Alexcentâs light blond hair and red eyes. Anyone could tell who he was just by his looksâa pure descendant of the royal family.
âWill you be okay?â she asked worriedly. âIf anyone sees us, theyâll recognize you immediately and⦠Pauline would be surprised.â
Alexcent shook his head. âDonât worry about that,â he said. From his pocket he drew out the potion bottle. âI have this.â
Amethyst frowned. âWhatâs that?â
Without even answering her question, Alexcent pulled the stopper from the bottle and drank it all.
âAlec!â Amethyst exclaimed.
Before her, Alexcent began to change. His hair grew into the color of ash and his bright red eyes darkened into gray. Amethyst took a step back. Gray?
But, of course, he wasnât Gray. He just looked a lot like him.
âWhatâs going on?â Amethyst asked.
Alexcentânow in disguiseâsmiled. âItâs a transformation potion.â
âIs it different from a simple transformation?â Amethyst prodded. âHow long does it last?â
âNormal transformation potions are different from Beliceâs magic,â Alexcent explained. âShe uses the oblivion magic as well. Only Belice can undo her magic, but I can undo a magic potion whenever I want.â
âI see,â Amethyst nodded. âYou look like a clumsy Gray.â
Alexcent scowled. âWhat?â
Amethyst let out a laugh. âYouâre more handsome than him,â she assured him. âBut you look more like a clumsy copy of him.â
âJust how do I look clumsy?â Alexcent demanded as Amethyst burst into another fit of giggles. The prince frowned. âWhat?â
Amethyst grinned. âWere you perhaps the black-haired man I met at the town festival in Mir City?â she asked. When the prince avoided her eyes and looked away, she smiled widely. âI knew it!â she said. âYou were the man that kissed my hand!â
Turning to walk away from her, Alexcent ignored Amethystâs accusations. âWe donât have much time,â he said. âDidnât you want to see Pauline?â
Amethyst scoffed as she followed him. âWhy are you changing the subject?â
âWell,â Alexcent said teasingly. âWho taught me to change the subject in the first place?â
âWhat?â Amethyst said. âAre you saying that I taught you?â
When the prince shrugged, she gaped. âI did not!â
âDid too.â
âDid not!â
âDid too.â
As their conversation devolved into laughter, they realized that all the stores they were heading towards were completely abandoned.
âWhat happened here?â Amethyst asked quietly.
Alexcent didnât answer her as he looked around. He realized that the street they were inâa once busy placeâwas nearly deserted.
Things had definitely changed in those parts.
Pulling away from Alexcent, Amethyst scurried off to the café. Luckily, she found that it was still open.
Then, she heard something breaking inside. Then, bickering. Then, something breaking again.
Amethyst burst through the door, shocked by what she found inside. A table was tipped over and chairs were broken everywhere. There was broken glass and things strewn all over the floor.
And, in the corner, a man yelling at someone he was backing into a wall.
âYou shouldâve listened when I asked nicely!â the man said roughly.
The person screamed back, âIâm not selling this place! Get lost!â
The man growled. âDo you really not understand?â
As Amethyst drew closer, she realized that the person being cornered was Pauline.
âI think youâre the one thatâs too stupid to understand!â Pauline bit back.
Just as the man was about to strike Pauline, a hand pulled his arm and twisted it back. Alexcent had managed to follow Amethyst into the café and knew that he had to put an end to the nonsense.
The man cried out as Amethyst stomped towards him angrily. âWhat is going on here?â
âNone of your business!â the man snarled at her. âWho are you?â
âMy friend owns this place,â Amethyst told him.
The manâs eyes grew wide, then he yelped as Alexcentâs grip on his arm tightened.
âAsh?â Alexcent called out, unsure of what to do next.
Amethyst glanced at him then back at the man. âPick his pocket.â
Alexcent paled. âWhat?â
âTake his wallet,â Amethyst instructed. âHe messed with the café. He canât just walk off thinking thatâs okay.â
Ignoring the manâs protests, Alexcent pinned him against the wall and reached into his pocket. He took the manâs wallet and handed it to Amethyst before pushing the man towards the door.
âWhat weâve done is nowhere near enough,â Amethyst said, following closely behind them. âBut Iâll let you go. Just donât ever come back.â
Alexcent pushed the man off.
He scoffed. âYouâve made a big mistake,â he said threateningly.
Amethyst opened his wallet and took all the money inside, throwing the wallet back at him. âIf you come back,â she said, glancing at Alexcent as she saw energy begin to radiate from him. âYouâll be sorry.â
The man took one look at Alexcent and couldnât help but shudder in fear. Before he turned to walk away, he looked up at Amethyst hesitantly. âWait,â he said, trying to sound confident. âI have something to tell the owner.â
From inside, Pauline yelled, âI donât want to hear it!â
Amethyst shrugged and nodded for the man to leave. âYou heard her.â
When the man simply stood there, stunned, Alexcent shoved him off. âIf you want to live,â he hissed, âyouâll leave this place alone and never come back.â
