A garment gently draped over her shoulder.
Emmeline was startled and turned around with pleasant surprise. âAbel!â
Yet, to her dismay, Benjamin was the one who had placed the garment on her.
Tears welled up in her eyes.
Perhaps it was disappointment or resentment.
âAbel couldnât find you. Heâs going crazy!â Benjamin sat down beside her, embracing her trembling shoulders.
âWhere is he?â She tearfully asked. âWhere is he? Why didnât he come to pick me up?â
âHe couldnât free himself from something important.â He said, âHeâll be back tomorrow morning.â
Abel didnât want Benjamin to inform Emmeline about Maxwell being hospitalized.
Since the situation had already stabilized, there was no need to upset her again.
He wanted her to have a good nightâs sleep today, and it wouldnât be too late to take her to the hospital tomorrow morning.
âTomorrow morning?â Emmeline furrowed her brows lightly. âWhat is he doing outside?â
âRegardless, he hasnât done anything wrongâ Benjamin said. âAbel wants you to enjoy your pasta and get a good nightâs sleep. Just wait for him to return.â
She felt a sense of relief in her heart, and a faint smile appeared.
After escorting Emmeline back to the Ryker Groupâs residence, Benjamin called Abel.
âIâve already taken her home. Take good care of her. Her eyes are all red from crying!â
Abel promptly ended the call with him and dialed Emmelineâs number.
âAbel.â Emmeline tried to sound calm, but tears silently streamed down her face.
âEmma.â He hoarsely said, âTell me, are you okay?â
âIâm fine. She replied, âIâve been busy all day and couldnât join you for a meal. Iâm sorry.â
âItâs my fault, I canât come back. He asked, âYou didnât have dinner, did you?â
âNo.â She said, âBut Iâll make something for myself later.â
âWhy was your phone turned off?â he asked hoarsely.
âBecause I couldnât find you. She choked and said, âEven if itâs on, I wouldnât have received your call.â
Abelâs heart completely shattered.
She woke up the next day to a steady knocking on the door.
Emmeline checked the time; it was 7:30 am.
Who can it be so carly? Does Abel not have the keys?
She pur on her slippers and walked over to open the door. To her surprise, it was Alana standing outside!
Alana seemed to assume that there was no one inside. When the door opened, she lost her balance and almost fell.
âAlana?â Emmeline was startled. âYouâre here so early. Is something wrong?â
Alana awkwardly smiled. âI suppose you didnât have breakfast, so I brought you some.â
As she walked in, she placed the breakfast on the table.
In that instant, Emmeline noticed a silver hairpin in Alanaâs hair.
It was hers!
Her heart skipped a beat.
She remembered Landon mentioning yesterday afternoon that Alana and Abel went out together.
They turned off their phone, and Abel didnât return all night.
Theyâre together all this time?
âYesterday, I was with Abel With a victorious smile, Alana said, âIt was my birthday the day before, and he had a meal with me Emmelineâs heart sank. Wasnât Abel with Dylan that day!
Did he lie?
âOh. Emmeline replied calmly, âItâs nothing. You can leave.â
âLetâs chat for a while.â Alana smiled. âI think youâll be interested in what I want to sayâ
âIâm not interested!â Emmeline coldly said, âI need to freshen up. Abel will come to pick me up later.â
âPick you up?â Alana seemed doubtful. She was afraid of encountering Abel.
That man was too sharp, and she couldnât handle him.
âDo you have a problem?â Emmeline looked at her. âOr do you want to wait until Abel arrives?â
âI just wanted to ask you.â Alana hesitated and said, âDid you call me last night?â
âYes, I used Abeâs office landline,â Emmeline said calmly.
âSo, you know that Abel and I were together?â Alana furrowed her brows.
âWhatâs the big deal? Emmeline shrugged. âIs he not allowed to have female company around him?â
âWell,â Alana sneered coldly. âSince youâre engaged, why do you care so much?â
Emmeline frowned. How did she know about this? Did Abel tell her?
