Lainey

After Owen explains to his grandma how I got into the predicament she asks me multiple questions. Which I answer the best I can.

Questions like, what does it feel like? do I still get hungry or tired? even questions like, can I feel things?

Once she's done we conclude that the only thing that changes is the fact that no one can see me.

Information I already knew.

"How do you know each other?" Mimi asks me.

A smirk graces my lips, "We go to school together."

Owen rolls his eyes, "And we aren't too fond of each other."

His grandma chuckles, "And why is that?"

I place my head in my hands, "Yes, why is that, Owen?"

He glares at me, "Because Lainey is a huge pain in my ass."

I gasp, "You are more of a pain in the ass than me."

Owen gently shakes his head, and a smile teases his face, "And that's coming from you who changed my bowling name to Lil bitch."

I hold back the laughter that threatens to escape bubble out of me, "But that was getting you back for my shitty birthday present."

A small giggle comes from his grandma and I feel the blood drain from my face. I just cussed in front of his grandmother.

Owens must understand my terror because he says, "Don't worry, Mimi doesn't mind fowl langue." He gives her a charming smile, "Just prepare yourself, Lainey talks like a sailor."

"I do not," I gasp, causing Owen to laugh.

"So, I take it you like to annoy each other," Mimi says.

Owen and I both scoff, "One time Owen sold me fake concert tickets online with a fake Facebook account."

"Only because you pretended to be my secret admire for four weeks." Owen glances at his grandma, "She gave me fake letters and everything. She even set up a fake date."

The laughter finally bubbles out of me, "I did that because you covered my car in post-it notes."

Owen laughs, "That was payback for spraying fart spray in my football helmet."

I'll never forget that prank; it was a bit complicated to pull off, but so worth it.

"Remember the time you ambushed me with balloons full of paint?" I throw back.

While I had on a white flowy tank top I have just thrifted.

"What about the time the local news came to a football game last year and when they were interviewing me you held that stupid sign up behind me," Owens says dryly.

I almost forgot about that prank. The last game of our junior year I knew the local news was coming to interview some of the team so I made a sign that said, 'Owen Huntley's hair is not real. He wears a tupe.'

That was by far one of my best pranks because the lingering effects were far better than the actual prank.

Owen simply shakes his head, "As you can tell, Mimi, Lainey is the bigger pain in the ass."

Mimi laughs, "I think it's pretty even."

We both roll our eyes and we all let a comfortable silence settle around us.

The more I think about it the more I realize that yes, Owen's pranks sucked, but he was never evil.

Like with the concert tickets, he gave me my money back when could have kept it.

"Aren't they just the cutest," Mimi gushes from the living room.

"Who?" I ask from the kitchen where I'm organizing her food cabinet.

I got tired of sitting and asked Owen for a job. He pointed me towards the kitchen and said, "Organize anything you want."

"Wyatt Kent the football player and his wife," Owen responds.

I set down the box of crackers I was checking the date on and walked into the living room.

On the TV is Wyatt hugging Katie while she smiles at the cameras behind him.

The news has always loved getting photos and videos of the happy couple. I don't know how many people magazines they have been on the cover of.

The news lady says the paparazzi caught the happy couple visiting her family. In the video, they're at a park their two kids running around.

The next video they show is Wyatt tossing a ball with his son while Katie pushes her daughter on the swings. The final video was one that the couple posted on social media. It is a video of Wyatt giving her a piggyback ride archosaurs the park as the kids walk behind them.

The news lady says the caption was, "Who needs a horse when you have an NFL quarterback to carry you around?"

Gosh, what I would give to fu do love like that.

Wyatt and Katie have been together since high school. They are both so lucky.

"Wyatt is who inspired me to play football," Owen says as we watch the TV.

I glance at him as he says, "I grew up watching him play every Sunday." Owen laughs, "I tried out for the quarterback position and my coach thought I was better at catching the ball than throwing it."

Mimi snorts.

"My whole family is football fans," I say.

Owen's eyes widen, "Wait, you like football?"

I cross my arms, "Yes. I was forced to watch it every Sunday." I smile, "I guess you could say it was an acquired taste."

Owen smiles and the reality of it does something to my insides, "I never pegged you as a football type of girl."

I shrug, "I have twin brothers. I was bound to fall in love with some type of sport."

Owen chuckles, "At least it wasn't NASCAR racing."

"Thank god!" I exclaim.
